With Larry K out of the running it is time to look to someone with Utah ties

Now that Larry K is off the market it is time to move in a different direction.  I was really getting excited about the chance of Larry K coming to Utah.  It is just too bad.

Nonetheless, it is time to move in a different direction.  I think Utah should look to its past for its next coach at this point.  I would love to see Majerus back but we all know that won't happen.  Therefore, I think we should look to one of his assistants at this point.  I think Tommy Connor would be a good hire.  I know he doesn't have any Division I coaching experience but he has proven that he can win.  Furthermore, he would be loyal to Utah and look at the job as a destination rather than a rest stop on the way to another job.  He would probably come fairly cheap as well which would help offset the financial burden of having to pay Giacoletti for 4 more years.

I would also like Donny Daniels.  However, he hasn't had a ton of success in his past head coaching gigs which worries me a bit.  Nonetheless, he's worked for Majerus and now Ben Howland at UCLA which are two great basketball minds.  He was also a great recruiter while at Utah and helped bring Keith Van Horn and Andre Miller to Utah.

My feeling at this point is that we should look to someone with ties to the program.  It is important that we get a good coach but it is also important that we get someone that wants to be at Utah.  I really do not think that Chris Hill will go to a former assistant for the job.  It does not seem like his style.  Nonetheless, I think it would be the right move at this point; especially since there do not seem to be any superstar coaches that are interested and/or available.  That could change as the search continues but right now I do not think it is worth paying big money to pry away someone from a different program that may not stay at Utah long-term if he has success.
