Thinking Andy Ludwig

Hi all,

I'm new here and this post could end up completely FUBAR so please bear with me.

Star-divide

I found Block U at the start of the season and I've enjoyed reading it and thought I might get some good feedback here. I've been dying to have an intelligent discussion about Andy Ludwig away from the flame wars on ESPN and other sites, so here goes.

I'm not a big Andy Ludwig fan and I've done more than my share of griping about him since he arrived in Utah. I've been trying to be rational this season and really evaluate his performance for the last four years and to my own surprise I'm still of the opinion that Ludwig is a lead weight around the neck of the Utes.

The final straw that solidified my position was when one of the SLC stations recently let slip that the final drives in the OSU and TCU games were called by Brian Johnson and Not Ludwig! All season I've been defending Andy a bit and pointing out the three or four fairly brilliant drives he calls every game even if the other five or six are terrible. Now I don't even know if I can give him credit for the majority of the good series this season.

So here are my thoughts on Ludwig...

As a offensive coach he seems to know his stuff, he knows how to draw up good plays and prepare his guys for the game.

The problem is that he can't make the calls during a game! Who the hell calls a reverse against TCU, the fastest best pursuit defense we will ever face. What sort of brain damage do you have to have to call 30-40 yard pass plays when Brian doesn't have the arm, you shouldn't be looking deeper than 20-30 with Brian. Direct snaps to Asiata as the sole setback are stupid, the reason that play had any traction under Myer is that they did it out of what looked like a regular set so the defense didn't know it was coming. All of his stupid personnel changes only slow things up and let the defense get set, spread option is all about keeping the defense off balance.  And I could go on an on.

Unfortunately I think Ludwig does bring something to the table as a quarterbacks/receivers coach and general contributer to the offensive scheme, but come game time I don't think he can cut it as the play caller. How can Kyle go to his buddy Andy and tell him that someone else is going to call the plays come game time though, and if Kyle can't do that then is there any other choice but firing him? Then there is the added problem of telling someone who helped the Utes to a 10-12 win season that he's holding back the team.

So anyone out there have any other thoughts? comments? flames?

I found the article very insightful and directly on point to the question you raised above. The article was written by a reporter that was allowed into the box with Andy Lugwig and the other coaches. It goes through the TCU game play by play as Lugwig called it.

Andy Ludwig is an above average OC

You won’t hear me saying that he is the best in the business or that he makes all the right calls, but he does get the job done most of the time.

As for the TCU game, I did not agree with all of his play calling, but he did ultimately make enough good calls to get the victory. I am not sure what the source is for the radio stations saying that Brian Johnson made all the calls in the 2 minute drill, but the link that OC-Ute referenced above seems to refute that.

Also, just because a play does not work immediately, does not mean that it has not done its job. Sometimes a play that nets no gain – like a deep pass – still does its job because it keeps the defense honest. They still have to guard the receivers and be on the lookout for a trick play. Sometimes a reverse play called in the first half that does not get any yards, is setting up a big run in the second half by discouraging the defense from over-committing.

Finally, most fans of college football seem to hate their own Offensive Coordinator. I have yet to figure out why this is, but it seems to be pretty universal. ybU fans hated Norm Chow when he was there and right now he is considered one of the best OCs in the business. They don’t like Robert Anae now even though they have had a pretty good offense under him. If you read message boards of just about any team, you’ll find someone complaining about their OC.

Anyway, I hope you think that was the start of an intelligent discussion and don’t think I was flaming you.

Best Laid Plans

When I gave examples I thought I might be getting myself in trouble because I’m really not talking about any one play or set of plays, it’s really about the overall effectiveness. I realize that I’ll always have gripes about the play calling of any OC (It’s just fan nature) but I have really been trying to be as objective as I can and I’m still not very happy.

Like I said above I’m more than willing to give him credit for some offensive talent, and I tried not to be too critical until he had settled in and had the personnel he wanted. But it has been four years and I personally haven’t seen much improvement. The play calling is slow, except in the two minute drill, and gives way to much time for defenses to set up. His formations and play calling seem too predictable, and the defense always seems to know the play. The backfield changes he seems to love (Asiata and Louks) don’t seem to have any real positive effect. He also seems to call too many plays that aren’t well suited to his players or the nature of the opponent’s defense.

I’m not sure I would be willing to call Andy more than just above average, and given a bit better play calling I think the system has more potential than it has shown thus far. Thus the conundrum if you want to improve, do you keep Andy and his system but let someone else call the plays, or are you forced to look elsewhere and dump Andy?

Quick side note:
I know the deep pass can set-up the run, but with Brian I think you call 30 yarder for the deep pass and not the 40 yarder. And I really think any reverse against TCU is just not wise, I was just trying for examples of him not calling plays that suit his players and the opponent.

Yep

Team play and mentally prepared—which is coaching too.

I hope Ludwig gets hired as someone elses head coach.

After Clemson and Tennessee take a quality mid-major coach, Ludwig’s resume at Utah may be good enough to get him a promotion elsewhere. This would save us the trouble of removing him.

When a defensive minded head coach is taking about changes that need to be made on offense, say increasing the tempo a bit through out the game, the OC is not getting the job done.

Signs are on the wall that his relations with Whittingham are strained and he might choose to look elsewhere and avoid the inevitable.

Andy Ludwig

Hawkman

After reading your post, I would have to agree and even say that your thoughts mirror my own beliefs about Andy. I do think, that he is a good OC but is very predictable. I find myself able to call his plays about 60% of the time. If I am able to call his play ahead of time, then I can only imagine what the DC is thinking of the other team.

It is hard to knock success over the last two years but, I do think he needs to change the pace of the game and get away from his predictable play calling. I have often wondered if he has a set of 10 plays that he is going to run on the first drive no matter what.

GO UTES!!!

Do you recall

There was an article just before or early in the season that stated Ludwig was the ONLY Ute coach not to receive a raise. I think the comment was the Whit could justify a raise after his performance last year.

Also recall the Navy game where coming out after half time Whit on TV stated that “he had a chat with the OC” and the second half the Utes opened it up – a little. I emphasis at time it looks like the play calling is more about “Playing not to loose rather than Playing to win.”

Again I have come to accept the just enough is good enough but man what a waste of talent.

Andy Ludwig

This is a great thread to comment on.

I’ve struggled with AL over the last two years in particular. I have to give him credit for developing workable offensive plans last year after Brian was hurt. However, I continue to be frustrated by some of the flabbergasting calls that have been made once we’re around the opponents 35-30 yard line. The fumblerooski for one, the end around to the short side of the field against the fastest defense (TCU) we’re likely to see, for another. I could go on and on. Thus, it’s a lack of what I call situational and/or game awareness that stuns me.

I believe that the Utes, with the best kicker in college football, have a red zone of 35 yards. Each time we’re around the opponents 35 yard line, I’m stunned every time one of the aforementioned type plays ensues, rather than handing it to one of our two HUGE POUNDING backs and letting Louie come in if we don’t make a first down and kick a 45-52 yard FG (not counting swirling winds ala the Wyo game). The calls have constantly put us at a disadvantage on the field and taken away opportunities to either go ahead by a FG/TD or close the gap by a likely 3 point kick. I understand that Whit sometimes wants to pin the other offense down deep in their own territory, but moving the ball inside the 35 gives the Utes a great chance to increase our score, rather than have to go to the punt game, and AL has frequently taken us out of that potential scoring position throughout the year.

I think, the inconsistent offense that we’ve seen this year is due to the lack of cohesion on the field that is created when various players are shuttled in and out of the game for one shot or for a trick play (that’s not needed) and it always seems to come just as the offense is starting to hum.

In spite of what I consider some major errors by the OC….the Utes are 10-0, likely to be 11-0 against SDSU this weekend and we do have a major chance at the BCS. I believe the credit goes more to the mental toughness and grittiness of the players than to the brilliance of the OC. The current OC is adequate, but that’s about it.

Ludwig and Johnson

We have a decent but not great offense, but then, we have a decent but not amazing quarterback. I love Johnson, he’s a nice guy, but he has never fulfilled the potential he exhibited as a freshman. In the OSU game so many plays took too much time to develop—that’s a coaching issue. Johnson held the ball too long too often, some times missing open receivers. That’s a QB issue.

Here’s their redeeming feature though: they are both simply amazing under pressure, how do you top that?

Credit where credit is due: they have won 10 games. But our defense would be in the top 5 if that O moved the ball a tad more.

Is our line the issue? I doubt it, our line manhandled TCU’s best lineman.
