Saturday's Bowl Games Open-Thread

The bowl season kicks off today with four games that mean little. Starting the day off is the EagleBank Bowl between Wake Forest and Navy, while the Las Vegas Bowl ends the night and that is probably the game Utah fans will be most interested in watching. That begins at 6:00 and will air on ESPN.

Go Wildcats?

If you have anything to say about the games, do it here. Should be a fun Saturday afternoon filled with four games no one really cares about.

CSU beats Fresno. Good win.

I still think I’m cheering for Arizona, am I out of line with this or should I suck it up and cheer for BYU?

Once again BYU screws the MWC

by not holding up their end of the day, season, and game losing to a pretty good AZ team. The coogs drop the conference profile at the very end of the season. This is why I can’t stand BYU.

There's a reason why a 7-5 Pac 10 team was favored over an 10-2 MWC team.

I believe it is known as “talent.” BYU was very lucky to be within 10. 4 times BYU fumbles were overturned? How did the Mormons pull that fix?

BYU's problem is very different than Utah & TCU.

Which is why I see them falling further behind those two programs in the future.

The Cougars have zero speed, which was on full display tonight. Any team with speed, whether it’s on the offensive or defensive end, will eat the Cougars alive. It’s why both Utah & TCU destroyed them, since that has been the focus of both program’s recruiting.

IF BYU is going to bust the BCS next year, they’re going to need far more speed on defense, because their secondary is just too slow. The players can’t keep up with above average receivers and we’re not just talking about mediocre Pac Ten teams, either. UNLV and Colorado State both gave BYU all they could handle.

But if the Cougars are going to be taken seriously nationally, they’re going to have to find some speedy corners, or they’re going to lose nearly every game against a team with an above average offense.

If Utah gets racked By Bama (and with 265lb DT's, they might), the MWC won't be taken seriously for a while.

Agree though, RE: quality of BYU’s athletes

Dr/ Saturday

As for BYU, this must be the most disappoiting 10-win season ever. The Cougars were ranked going into Saturday’s game despite a marquee win over Air Force, the only team they beat with a winning record, and looked about as uncompetitive for most of the second half against Arizona as they did in the bad regular season losses to TCU and Utah. A pair of Tuitama touchdown passes in a six-minute window in the third quarter made the Cougar defense look very, very slow. This is the first time Bronco Mendenhall’s stock has dipped, although it should go without saying that you’re doing something right in the big picture when a 10-win season seems routine; BYU is obviously much closer now to the “BCS buster” everyone predicted in August than the 6-7 team that started the current Vegas Bowl streak in Mendenhall’s first season. The next prolific robo-quarterback will emerge from the mold to replace Max Hall in the Spring and the vast majority of the Mountain West will remain under the Cougars’ boot.
But this is still the team that was few seconds from becoming Washington’s only victim in September. Other than lame-duck Oregon at the end of its second half slide two years ago, BYU under Mendenhall still hasn’t done much to improve its reputation for lacking the athletes to win against other poll-worthy competition, and the second half Saturday night did not help.

Are You Guys Kidding me!?

Come on. You rag on BYU’s athleticism, but you do it as if Utah actually had athletes! IF A PLAYER IS A TRUE ATHLETE THEY GO TO A CONFERENCE LIKE THE SEC. If you are mediocre, you take what you can get and go to somewhere like the Mountain West.

I’ve said it before. Being the best team in the MWC is like being the tallest midget. It is just not that cool. Who did Utah even beat this year? A Michigan that ended up sucking, and an Oregon St. (without their best player) who didn’t finish in the top 25 anyway. The only top 25 teams they beat were BYU (who you all say suck anyway) and TCU. You know why beating TCU is not that cool? Because they are also in the MWC.

You guys are so funny. Utah: crappy football and crappy weather. What a place.

Right.

You’re 100% correct here. I mean, that SEC talent at Tennessee really dominated one of the worst teams in the Mountain West, right?

Oh, wait…

Yeah, thought so.

Please JazzyUte

One game and you will base the talent of an entire conference? Please. I beg you to come on here and claim that overall the Mountain West is a better conference than the SEC. More talent, athleticism, speed, etc. Please do that.

Again. You guys are so funny.
