CFN picking Utah to win the Mountain West?

It at least appears this way, as they have the Utes playing in the Las Vegas Bowl this year. Which is surprising, since BYU has completely owned this conference the past two years. If CFN's predictions hold true, which they probably won't, BYU will be playing New Mexico State in the New Mexico Bowl, ouch!

So is this too big of an expectation for Utah? Probably not, as I've said a few times over the past few months that this is the year for Utah to win the Mountain West. They return a ton of talent, have a favorable conference schedule and it's the fourth year of Whittingham's tenure here. It's almost now or never, but it's good the Utes are once again getting some preseason buzz.

What do you think? Will Utah be playing in Vegas come December and will they be hoisting the Mountain West trophy at the end of the BYU game?

Utah MWC Champs?

Personally, I think you’re a sellout. But beyond that, I think we’ve got a great chance to win it. The problem is that we had just as good of a chance the last two years (especially last year) and we didn’t get it done. We’ll see. The UNLV game last year really robbed me of my faith in Whittingham, 9-4 record notwithstanding. If he comes through with a MWC crown, all will be forgiven. But he’s got to remember that we can’t be playing catchup in Nov. If we’re 5-2 going into the rivalry game, we’ve already lost (even if we beat the zoobs).

Of course I'm a sellout.

I guess this means I must start voting Republican, eh?

And I agree with you, I’m optimistic, but have doubts. I just want a season where we don’t have a head-scratching loss (‘05 against CSU, SDSU and New Mexico, ‘06 against Wyoming and New Mexico, 07 against UNLV). Utah should still defeat Wyoming, which leaves only AFA and UNM as the two toughest road games. If they win both, there is no excuse for not winning the MW this year.

Utah MWC Champs?

Lest anyone get too high on one article, does anyone see BYU ending up in the New Mexico Bowl. They pretty much sailed through the MWC with a new quarterback, traditionally a down year for BYU. Yes they lose a lot on Defense, but Come on, no one would have wanted their secondary last year anyway. Yes they lost some at linebacker, but their best pass rusher is back. I don’t see how you can project them to finish 4th or 5th in the conference and end up in the New Mexico Bowl. So if this part of the analysis is flawed, I have to suspect the whole analysis is not very accurate.
