What does he know? Block U's Blogpoll's first draft preseason ballot

This is all new for me, which means I'm probably going to mess up every now and then. So please, bear with me on this one.

But each week, Block U will release its preliminary top-25 poll for MGoBlog's BlogPoll. Then, because the interwebs rock, I will ask for your feedback on my rankings and together we just may create the coolest, most awesomeness and amazing top-25 poll known to man.

Now comes the tricky part. Figuring out how the hell you come up with rankings when a game hasn't even been played yet.

Do you go on last year's final top-25? Maybe, but we all know Hawaii won't be anything special this year.

Do you go on how much talent returns? Possibly, but I hear Idaho has a good number of players coming back and I doubt they're good enough to crack the top-100, let alone the top-25.

Do you close your eyes, aim a dart at the map and throw, choosing the school closest to where it hit? Probably not, since I hear that's how the media comes up with their poll.

That leaves favoritism and just random selections based on what you think you know. Yeah, that sounds good enough for me.

So with that said, here is that first draft of my top-25. Agree? Disagree? You need to let me know and we'll come up with Utah's version of a great top-25 poll.

I also noticed that your posting name is “JazzyUte” which is ironic on a cornucopia or levels. I get the slight reference to the Utah Jazz, which is cute. The Jazz have a long history of almost being great. Outside of Bill Lambeer, John Stockton is the best white basketball player of all time. Sad that it turned out that Karl Malone was a complete douchebag/ hypocrite. I hope his son does well in the NFL so he can rub it in his dad’s Harley riding face. The other reason your moniker reverberates with irony is that I don’t think that anyone in Utah has ever heard Jazz music. Do they pump it in before Carlos Boozer shoots a free throw? Jazz music is the soul of the black folk, or New Orleans (where you stole the Jazz from mind you) and mormons didn’t recognize black people as being human until 1978. While I’m glad that things have changed, I am wary of any group of people that disregard another race as inferior (including white people). But good luck this year, except that first game. I hope you guys have a great season.

Another take

Using the coaches poll as a guide and adding slight biases led me to these results:

1. Georgia
2. Oklahoma
3. LSU
4. USC
5. Florida
6. Ohio State
7. Auburn
8. West Virginia
9. Wisconsin
10. Texas
11. Missouri
12. Kansas
13. Virginia Tech
14. BYU
15. Arizona State
16. Clemson
17. Texas Tech
18. Tennessee
19. Oregon
20. Illinois
21. South Florida
22. Wake Forest
23. Fresno State
24. Rutgers
25. Boston College
( 26. Utah )
( 30+. Michigan )

Utah, nor Michigan, is a top 20 team. A top 25 spot for either team is reasonable but not certain.

USC appears to be pulling a Miami. Ohio State needs to prove they can still win a close game. Missouri I don’t trust yet. Clemson always shoots themselves in the foot. BYU IS REALLY TOUGH THIS YEAR.

Fresno State at Rutgers may be the second best opening game this year.

Thanks!

Michigan is probably the team I really see dropping out of the top-25 and then adding Fresno. I also am on the fence about Oregon State, who I could trade for Penn State.

Penn Who?

Ok, Joe Pa… Tradition… Blah blah blah

I’d go Rutgers or Boston College.

I agree with the comments below that ASU look better than Oregon. I know I gave a list above, but I wanted to echo the resonance in thought. Why not bump Oregon down to 19?

As a Utah bias I think it is important that the non-BCS teams stick together. We need to include Fresno State. Utah could easily be moved above South Florida without anyone really calling foul.

You're right.

I originally had Fresno, but took them out for Oregon State. I think I’ll take Oregon State out and put in Fresno. Maybe drop Michigan for Rutgers.

Since blogs are all about bias..

I think I will throw my two cents in about Oregon being ranked higher than ASU. It just doesn’t sit well with me, considering the 4-year experience of Rudy Carpenter as QB here in Tempe. Obviously it’s just a preliminary poll, and the results of the first 5 weeks will dictate the actual realities, but in the mean time I figured I’d throw it out there.

I am most interested in seeing how Clemson, Texas Tech, and Missouri do this season. If the chips fall their way, we could be watching a very unexpected BCS championship come January (think Texas Tech/Florida sounds like fun? I do).

Fair enough.

Oregon does have enough question marks on offense to warrant a drop in the rankings. I don’t know too much about Arizona State right now, except they should have a solid offense, but what about defensively?

I’ll probably bump Oregon down to 20th or something around there.
