Crazy.
Of course, Whittingham wouldn’t tell ME about this. He knew Schramm was the one even when I congratulated him on the choice of 2 OCs. Guh.
Does this mean we will see more of the Asiata formation?
Does this mean that when we are running over a team we will stick with it?
It looks like we need a good coach with some solid experience at WR or QB to keep our passing game sharp, especially if Utah is still committed to the spread offense.
Well I believe Schramm played QB in college.
So he has some experience there.
I’ll be honest, his resume isn’t necessarily one you’d expect from an OC of a program like Utah, but I trust Whittingham.
A change of tune?
I don’t think you would have said that 5 months ago…
Utah’s commitment to the spread is a legitimate question. Whittingham is defensive minded and would be predisposed to a philosophy that it is best to control the line and run the clock down to secure a win, rather than to score as quickly and often as possible.
Promoting a RB coach could indicate a change in offensive philosophy. If this is the case I would be very concerned about our future success.
I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
But only because I’ve jumped the gun in the past and came out looking like a fool.
If he abandons the spread and we go to a power running game, I’m going to be disappointed, but I don’t know what he has planned for Utah.
Like I said, he played QB in college, so he’s not completely confined to just a running offense. I’ve also read Schramm was the one who, on the sidelines, communicated Ludwig’s plays to the quarterback, but I’m not 100% sure on that.
I like the spread and Utah is built to run it
But I don’t like it as much as I did back in 2004 when there were only a few programs that ran the offense. Now that everyone runs it, it does not catch teams by surprise as much as it used to. By hiring Missouri’s offensive coordinator, I think Wyoming will be added to the long list of programs that are now on the spread bandwagon.
So while I am against going with a power running offense, I would not be very upset if we did.
Why?
Why be concerned? We played conservatively all season and won all our games. If we pass more and lose more games will we be happier?
Defensive game plans punish opposing teams, beat them down, win games. Whittingham likes people on the opposing side ot give up, to say “uncle.” He wants them to hate playing us.
When an opponent is worn down you do score easily and often. Controlling the clock is as beneficial as gaining yardage—BYUs yardage exceeded ours did it not, in our game?
Bottom line: need to keep our recruiting up or “pass and run” arguments are meaningless. You recruit the right talent, who cares if you run first as long as that talent issuited to the offense and it is superior ot you opponents talent. The biggest issue right now is do we have coaches kids arte excoite about calling them ot get them to come to Utah? No, we need those guys on the line now. Rodericks should have left two weeks ago to free us up, he screwed us in my opinion or Whit screwed it up by by not acting quickly, we may never know what occurred.
Utah had excellent pass/run split in yardage most games this year and overall, look for that to continue, Whittingham likes balance and a balance makes the spread work well.
A bigger question is not Schramm, it is gettin new coaches in and coordinating a team of coaches to present the right mindset to the players before next season, time to get moving forward for this staff.
