Utes rock Rams with second half comeback
What a win. I'll obviously have more on this game later, but wow! Utah looked dead when they fell behind 17-3 in the third quarter and then to roll off 21-straight points (which all came off three interceptions) was huge. Terrance Cain might have cemented himself as a player tonight and Robert Johnson proved he may be one of the best defensive players in the conference.
It's just one win, but I think we'll look back at this as one of the most important of the season.
1-0 in Mountain West play - let's keep it up, Utah!

Grade card
Offense- C+
Today was truly the tale of two half’s. In the first half, the Offense was horrible. Struggling to finish drives and not moving the chains when it mattered The Utes didn’t show up in the first half.
Luckily the offense woke up late in the third and swung the momentum back in the Utes favor with a quick score after the Utes fell behind 17-3. Cain is improving on the road but still needs to improve a lot. The Utes also continued to struggle with stupid penalties and unnecessary turnovers. I have to give them credit though, once the wheels got turning, Terrence Cain and the offense got the job done.
Defense-B-
like the offense, the D play varied from quarter to quarter. I give them credit for hol;ding CSU to three points in the first half, but they were exposed a bit early in the third quarter letting the Rams almost run away with the ball. Luckilly the defense also stepped up huge in late third and fourth getting three INT’s, (Including one that iced the game) to put the Utes in position to get the W. The run defense REALLY needs to improve, CSU was doing whatever it wanted on the ground and it was really concerning ,considering Utah was such a strong defense against the run last year. Give the game ball to Robert Johnson for his tremendous effort.
Special Teams- B+
Truthfully, I think the ST unit played a minimal role in the win. Joe Phillips stayed perfect and got us on the board early. The punt/kickoff coverage continued to slack off in key moments though (Thus I didn’t give them an A).
All in all it was a great win in terms of coming from behind. It wasn’t a pretty win but unlike Oregon, the Utes took the game when the Rams made turnovers late in the game. Great win boys.
4-1 GO UTES!

offense
Why does the offense seem to open up when utah is down? This team has the ability to out score and out play most teams. Against BYU and TCU a 2 TD comeback is highly unlikely they need to get out to big lesds.

I just think they're young.
The offense stalled the second Shaky went out. You could tell the coaches tensed up and didn’t use Wide nearly as much as they had in the first because if he went down, we would have been screwed.
I think the offense played one REALLY bad quarter (the 2nd) and got their act together when things got grim.
You’re right, though, they won’t be able to come back from 2 touchdowns down against TCU or BYU. Hopefully by that point in the season, though, they’re more consistent on offense.

I think you Utah cause of my stupidity
I jinxed the Rams. Right after CSU took the 17-3 lead I turned to my friend and said “We are going to beat them!” 20 unanswered points later I left cold and sad.
Utah is still in the top tier of teams, I was more impressed by them then BYU. That offense can be deadly when they start clicking. The 2 play, 29 second, 57 yard drive in the 3rd took all the wind out of the CSU sails.
Good game overall! I think Steve Fairchild might still be yelling at Stucker for that first pick! He was in his face for a good minute yelling then was trying to watch the D but couldn’t help it and kept yelling at Stucker from 10-15 yards away.

The offense has potential to be great.
Right now, we’re toward the top in the nation in terms of yards per game. That’s not bad, especially for an offense with a new quarterback and one without three of its running backs at the moment.
CSU looked impressive. I thought they could hang with Utah, but I didn’t expect them to go up 17-3. This reminded me of so many of those classics in the McBride-Lubick eras, just with the opposite outcome.
Which is fine by me, because those games were enough to want to send you into a murder spree.

Yeah
I think the O has some real potential buut I’d like more depth at RB. I mean, no one is even getting carries to build depth outside of wide, that’s bad. Need some hardened RBs come TCU and BYU games.
