Utes beat Rebels in lackluster game
Boring! What a boring second half. The Utes had put the Rebels away pretty much at the half, but didn't dominate enough in the second to provide excitement points.
But the win is acceptable since the last time they were down there, they lost 27-0.
Yeah, that wasn't going to happen this time around.
Unfortunately, I had hoped for 40+ points and that didn't happen. Mostly because the Utes only managed 7 freaking second half points. And I thought Vegas was for scoring. Someone lied.
Anyway, good win considering the past. Now the Utes have a nice home stand coming up and should be positioned nicely when they take on TCU in November.
You know the drill. I'll have more on the game later. But for now, yay?

Second half was ugly but was overall a decent performance
Good
Rojo once again proved he is the man
Eddie Wide once again went over 100 yards rushing
Defense played very well in the red zone.
Bad
Way too many penalties
Fumbles
too many 3 and outs vs a very bad defense

Typical second half of a game where one team gets up on the other quickly.
So I can’t get too upset over what happened. I thought we’d play better in the second half, but 35-15 looks good.
Better than 38-28. ;)
We did cover the spread of 16

Yeah last weeks spread was 6.
Box Score looks good
Cain completes 70% of his passes with 2 touchdown passes and no ints.
Wide rushes for 111 yards on just 17 carries
Receiving was balanced tonight with Reed, Brooks, Key and Hendy all catching 3 balls or more
Ray Stowers completed a pass for 8 yards? Don’t remember this. Is it a mistake?

Utes need a full 60 minutes
I understand a let down after a dominant first half, but it was too much. Utes need a full game maybe the Air Force game will be that.

In wasn't that boring
Sure the offense struggled but I thought our defense got tested a lot in this game and we were able to stop them on critical plays. We held them to 15 points which is their lowest point total of the season and is something to be proud about for the defense.
we could be like utah state and lose all are games but cover all are spreads.
utah state has scored the last td vs byu, utah, texas am and nevada to cover there spread. i rather be 5-1 straight up and if we cover so be it. they did not cover vs nmsu but thats it.

The penalties and turnovers...
really bother me about this team. They seem to happen every week too. The offense didn’t look good at all, but I think a large part of that is because they couldn’t get into a rhythm with the TO’s and penalties. If that isn’t fixed this team can’t beat teams like TCU and BYU. They need to stop shooting themselves in the foot. They aren’t good enough to overcome those kinds of mistakes. At least not yet.

All I know is . . .
TCU looks far better than either BYU or Utah right now.
That may not hold up when we play them, football is a funny thing, but right now they look better.
If Utah or BYU squander chances against TCU like we have against our lesser foes, i expect they will spank our behinds.
That may be true
But we don’t play TCU until November. I don’t like worrying about how the season is going to unfold. We have all offseason to worry about that. We only have 12 or 13 games to enjoy.
This week I am going to enjoy thinking about Air Force. They are the only team in the MWC that leads the all-time series with Utah. Let’s chip away at that Utes.
It'll come...
This is still a young offense. The turnovers are a concern, but I’m not worried about TCU right now.
That game is in November. We typically play our best ball in late-October, Early November. This stretch isn’t about winning pretty. It’s about winning and building confidence.
More fun stats...
Utah is 7-0 in the month of October over the last three seasons. Their last loss in this month came against New Mexico three years ago (2006) tomorrow.
Dating back to the 2006 season, they’re 8-2 in October. Only once has Whittingham’s Utes finished with a losing record in the month and that was his first season.
Jazzy Ute I told you the Utes wouldn't push forty.
But the D was definitely something to behold. The Utes squandered four out of five chances for the Rebels to put up touchdowns in THE DODGE RED ZONE cough ’scuze me.
I attest that the D on this Ute squad is pretty damn near as good as last year’s D.
It’s just that dominant offense they’re still struggling to unleash. Last year the Utes pushed forty 6 different times. There are only six regular season games left in the entire season. But this should only worry us for those who want to see an upset in Fort Worth.
I only mention TCU because BYU are giving up more touchdowns against all of the Utes’ common opponents with the exception of USU. They’re letting their opponents drive down the field a lot easier. Imagine how easy the U will have it if they’re letting teams like SDSU, COST, and UNLV put up 3-4 touchdowns a game. With RoJo owning the Max to Pitta love-fest, the Ute O should have no trouble putting up a comfy lead throughout the game.
I just can’t conceive a way the Utes will beat TCU if they can’t completely dominate anyone in their conference.
Well I do see is breaking 40 this season.
We should have this week. We were up 28-6 with an entire half to go. That’s just two scores to 40. Had they not eased up a bit in the second half, it happens.
If I had to guess, we drop 40 on New Mexico – who look absolutely like trash right now.
