Mountain West Conference week eight power rankings

It appears we have a two-team race for the conference championship and TCU has jumped out to the lead. It should be interesting to see how things play out the remainder of the season, but it looks like the Utes and Frogs will be fighting for the Mountain West when the two teams meet next month.

This is what I expected, even though Utah has gotten there slowly and hardly as impressively as the Frogs. But 3-0 in conference play is 3-0, regardless of how good those wins look. Especially when two of those games came on the road and you're now just one game into a three-game homestand.

As for the rest, well it's hard to say. Really, outside of TCU, Utah and New Mexico, I don't know where to rank most of these teams. But I'll try.

Team of the Week: TCU. For the second straight week, the Frogs dominated an opponent. Of course, this was a much bigger game on an even bigger stage. Playing BYU in Provo is never easy and the Frogs pretty much just toyed with them.

Team of the Weak: BYU. They were blown off the field by TCU. This game was never really close, as the Cougars fell behind 7-0, 14-0 and then 21-0 before eventually finding the end zone. What was once a promising season after their win over Oklahoma has turned into a nightmare.

The rankings are after the jump...

1 TCU not only beat BYU, they tore them apart. It was probably the most impressive win the Frogs have put together since joining the Mountain West in 2005. It doesn't appear anything stands in the way of their first undefeated regular season in modern history.
2 The Utes stayed alive against Air Force, even though they probably should have lost. But a win is a win and they're now 3-0 in conference play with a Halloween game against Wyoming looming.

Air Force did about all they could to win on the defensive end, but could hardly find any offense when it counted the most. In overtime, facing a fourth and two, their offense failed to convert. That was pretty much how it went the entire day for the Falcons - they did just enough to get in striking distance, only to come up short in the end. Now comes a must-win at Colorado State or the season might be lost.

4 BYU probably should drop more because of their performance, but I can't justify putting Wyoming - who didn't play - over them. Now the Cougars have a week to stew over their big loss before playing those Cowboys on the 7th of November.
5 The Cowboys had a week off and now get set to take on the 3-0 Utes. Can they pull off the stunner and position themselves for a late surge and a bowl berth? We'll find out.
6 I think San Diego State had the most shocking win of the week. I mean, I knew CSU was struggling, but they were absolutely thrashed by the Aztecs at home. Great win for their coaching staff.
7 UNLV won! How about that? Of course, they played the worst team in the Mountain West. But hey, it's all about baby steps. Next up, a road date with TCU. That could get ugly fast.
8 CSU went from one of the hottest teams in the nation to one of the coldest over the last five weeks. After opening the season 3-0, the Rams have now dropped 5-straight games. Unless they turn it around quick, this season is over.

game should be interesting between utah vs tcu but i think tcu's defense is

better than utah’s and there offense is hitting it’s stride at the right time. maybe utah put’s it all together but i think tcu will beat them. they are the only team that will beat them and they will end the season 11-2. with a nine straight bowl game streak intact! utah will definitely be stronger next year and if we get asiata back(and maybe without) we can go for another 13-0 season b/c we got pitt and notre dame next year and notre dame game is a nationwide audience!

Who would have thought Colorado state would start 0-4 in conference. That’s crazy talk..Especially after starting 3-0, beating some decent teams. They’ve been good in 1st half but absoultely horrible in 2nd halves of games lately.

Csu

I agree. The idaho and SDSU games were real surprises. Their other losses are Utah, TCU and BYU, so those aren’t really a shock.
