Mountain West Conference week nine power rankings
It was actually a pretty ho-hum week for the Mountain West. I think the only surprise last week was the fact New Mexico nearly stunned the upstart Aztecs. But they didn't and because of that, everything pretty much went according to plan.
Because of this, Utah and TCU are still atop the conference. The two meet next week and that is setting up to be a pretty prolific game. Of course, both still have to get by their relatively easy tests this weekend (the Utes play host to New Mexico; TCU travels to take on San Diego State).
Other than that, Wyoming-BYU appears to be a decent matchup. It's an important game for both, so it'll be interesting to see how that one plays out.
Team of the Week: TCU. They're becoming a fixture here. Which isn't a surprise, because they appear to be the best team in the Mountain West. Last week, they really took it to UNLV, shutting the Rebels out.
Team of the Weak: UNLV. The Rebels got their asses handed to them by TCU and another nail was added to Mike Sanford's coaching coffin.
The rankings after the jump...

The Frogs are only a few weeks away from their best season in school history. Can they get it done or will past ghosts derail their undefeated hopes? It might happen this week, as they go on the road to take on the improved San Diego State Aztecs. While I think a loss seems improbable, it's possible - especially if they're overlooking the Aztecs and toward their big showdown with Utah a week from Saturday.

It wasn't pretty at times, but Utah won. They're 4-0 in conference play and pretty much control their own destiny. Now comes a team they've historically struggled against. But these Lobos look a bit different from New Mexico teams of years past and it's hard to envision them giving Utah a traditional scare.

The Falcons bounced back nicely after their tough loss to Utah by beating the hapless Colorado St. Rams. Saturday, they host struggling Army. A win there makes Air Force bowl eligible. |
|||

The Cougars had a bye-week and are ready to turn their season around Saturday on the road against Wyoming. This is a must-win for Bronco and BYU. They can't afford a loss here. Not after all the hype they garnered when the season started and after their win over Oklahoma.
| 5 | ![]() |
For three quarters, Wyoming looked as if they were going to stun the Utes. Then the fourth quarter rolled around and all was lost quickly. This week is a different opponent from the state of Utah, but a similar result - with a complete game - could turn their season around and put them in position for a bowl berth.
| 6 | ![]() |
The Aztecs struggled with New Mexico, but eeked out a win. Now they'll look to shock TCU and put themselves on the fast track for the school's first bowl berth since the 1998 season.
| 7 | ![]() |
CSU is here because they didn't get shut out. That's about it.
| 8 | ![]() |
UNLV is terrible. This week is the Terrible Bowl between Colorado State and the Rebels. Who'll win? Does anyone care?

Is Air Force really better than BYU?
Maybe we need to allows more than one team to suck this year.

AFA and BYU might be similar...
AFA played TCU a lot better than BYU. If the Cougars stomp Wyoming this weekend, I’ll probably move ’em up a spot.
Yeah...
I hate BYU as much as the next guy, but I don’t see how you can justify putting Air Force ahead of them here.

Why not?
I had AFA 3rd in my last rankings too.
How can I justify it? They’re my rankings. ;)
BYU lost to TCU by a huge margin…AFA only by 3 (I think).
I dropped BYU because of their really bad loss two weeks ago. AFA was moved up because they barely lost, on the road, to Utah.
Since Air Force won this week and BYU didn’t play, I can’t justify dropping the Falcons a spot.
I know you had BYU 4th last week...
and I disagreed with that too. I understand BYU has been blown out twice. However Air Force has 4 losses. Including Minnesota and Navy. You can’t just judge them by how they have played TCU imo. Do you really think Air Force will beat BYU when they play? I certainly don’t.
But, like you say, they are your rankings. So rank away.

And BYU's defense is suspect . . .
AF has been as bad as Utah offensively this year but they might show some improvement against a lack luster BYU defense. BYU does match up well speed wise with Air Force. BYU moved the ball well almost all games, I think they are too much for AF unless the Falcons start cranking out yards like they used to.
these rankings..
..SUCK..j/k. they are just Jazzy’s personal opinion. If air force ends up finishing the season strong than he could say he was right.
You must mean BYU
The poll is accurate. You think BYU is clearly better than Air Force? AFA vs TCU: 20-17. BYU vs TCU: 38-7.
