You Wanted a Rivalry with National Recognition?
Well, it's getting there. Want to know what makes the Auburn v. Alabama, Michigan v. Ohio St, Army v. Navy, Duke v. North Carolina rivalries so famous? Pure hate. I'm talking full on beer-tossing, fist-throwing, belittling, arrogant, self-righteous-surfacing hate! And, during Morgan Scalley and the Ute's 2004 interview with ESPN, they wanted the nation to know how deep the hate goes in this rivalry. Hence the "hate those f-ing pricks" comment. BYU hasn't had their interview with ESPN during rivalry week yet (sorry Cougs, but it's the truth), but I'm sure when/if they do, they'll do their best to build it up too. I think the reason it's starting to get out of hand is because Utah (the State) is so unused to getting a national spotlight, unlike some of those other heated rivalries. So now, we are taking it over the top. Especially since the rivalry is so evenly matched these days. So, say what you will about how the hate on this rivalry is getting too out of hand, but, in my opinion, it's really coming from the recognition and respect we want deep down inside from the rest of the nation. That's why I don't think anything is going to change on either side. Year after year we are going to have the same issues surface. Let's face it. It is what it is.
