Utah's 2009 conference schedule released
Another sign we're slowly inching toward the start of the 2009 season, the Mountain West has released the schedule for this year.
Utah opens conference play at Colorado State and UNLV, before three straight home games against Air Force, Wyoming and New Mexico in the month of October. At the start of November, the Utes then travel to face TCU, return to Salt Lake to face San Diego State and end the season with their annual rivalry game against BYU, which takes place on Nov. 28th in Provo.
My first reaction with this schedule:
The Utes won't have any break once conference season starts, as their bye week is rather early in October.
However, I think the schedule is actually pretty favorable for the Utes, as they end the season playing five of their last six games in the state of Utah.
No Thursday games for any team. Who knows if the conference has decided to end Thursday games, or if they'll release them at a later date.
Wyoming on Halloween. That could either be moved or prove to be an awesome environment for football.
Now if only we could skip to September 3rd.

Per the Wyoming game...
I think we’ve just found a perfect candidate for this year’s “blackout.”
While I’m all about the crimson and white, I thought the blackout was fun and well participated in.

That would be a great time for the blackout.
If only Wyoming had a football program worth a damn!
But yes, I like that idea. I also like asking people to wear costumes…invite kids to do the same, maybe have a costume contest and trick-or-treating outside in the tailgate lot or the parking lot.
This definitely has the potential to be an awesome experience.

Byes are overrated
The bye before last year’s New Mexico game threw the team out of rhythm and made the game harder than it should have been. This schedule is ideal. I hope it stays this way and the league does not later add some more Thursday night games.
As is, Utah will get into a nice little rhythm by playing each Saturday. Utah starts the non-conference slate with a tune-up game against Utah State. The conference slate starts with a manageable game at Colorado State and follows it up another winnable game at UNLV. I hope they will be going at full speed then for the heart of the conference schedule.
Go Utes!

One Concern
Our biggest threats every year are TCU and BYU, and we’ve got them on the road. It’s going to be difficult to challenge last season’s record with these two tough road games…

Yea, I think 13-wins is out of reach.
However, 10-wins and a conference crown (whether shared or won outright), is definitely doable.

However...
if we could somehow pull out the two road games against TCU and BYU, I would be VERY impressed with this team.
