Ever been to Laramie, WY?
Hi there, I'm a fellow SBNation blogger over at Burnt Orange Nation and could really use some help with an article I'm writing about the Texas' 2009 road trips and I know next to nothing about Laramie, Wyoming. I’ve reached out to the local sports editor and a couple of bloggers, but they’ve been about as useful as one sock.
No doubt talking about the home of one of your conference foes isn't high on your list of to dos, but I figured readers of Block U have probably been there a time or two..
If you have and wouldn't mind helping out a Longhorn, I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions you have on the following topics:
1) Overview: Just your initial thoughts about the town and what a visiting fan should expect...is it a decent football atmosphere, are the fans friendly, is it worth making the trek, etc.
2) Lodging: Hotel/motel recommendations, especially if things are going to book up quick. What alternatives do we have if we can’t stay in Laramie? Where’s the next best thing?
3) Transportation: I’m assuming a rental car is a must for a trip like this, but what about flying in for the game. Where do you recommend flying into and what kind of drive times are fans looking at from places like Denver, Salt Lack City, or Fort Collins. Any other travel transportation tips would be much appreciated.
4) Restaurants/Bars: Just your recs for best places to eat and drink or put a better way, “you can’t leave Laramie without going to (blank)? Also, where are football fans likely to congregate the night before the game.
5) Tailgating: Please set the scene for me...do a lot of people do it, where’s the best place to do it, are there any laws or things fans should know about so they don’t get in trouble.
6) Tickets: What’s the scalping situation...if a fan can’t get a ticket through the school, should they come anyway and scalp. Also, what’s the stadium like. Are there places in the stadium with really bad site lines or sections/rows fans should avoid buying tickets in.
7) Gameday Traditions: Just anything fun about Gameday in Laramie. Does the team or Wyoming fans doing anything visitors should watch out for.
8) Local Attractions: Are there any local attractions or anything on campus worth checking out...also, any tips on side trips? I thought about putting something in here about Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, and the Grand Tetons, but those places look really far away. Still, fans may make a whole a week out of this road trip.
And of course anything else I might have missed.
Feel free to comment below or email me at 54bblog@gmail.com
Thanks in advance,
54b
PS. Still bummed our home and home with Utah was cancelled. I've hiked and gone skiing in the Wassatch (sp) Mountains a few times and absolutely love the area.

I've been to Laramie twice for games
Both experiences were pretty miserable. The fans I experienced were less than hospitable. I had beer and numerous expletives thrown my way. Kids were giving our band the finger and cussing. The town is nothing to get excited about. It’s small, remote and full of people who are none too excited to see you if you don’t root for their cowboys. Getting there is a pain too. Coming from Austin, I would say fly into Denver, rent a car and drive to Laramie. It will take a couple hours. An even better suggestion might be to save your money and not waste it on a trip to Laramie. Needless to say I’m not a big fan of the place. MAybe someone else has had a better experience?
The Wyoming fans are notoriously brutal to Utah and BYU fans.
I don’t know if they will treat Texas fans the same way, but you should expect a lot of cursing and the possibility of having things thrown at you. There is sort of a running joke that Wyoming fans fill balloons with urine to lob them at opposing fans. Unfortunately, there is some truth to that joke.
As for lodging, Laramie is a town of 25,000 people. You’ll run out of hotel rooms quickly if you expect to send 20,000 longhorn fans to the game. Keep in mind, UW has one of the worst attendance rates in IA football, so you probably will have more UT fans than UW fans at the game. I would suggest you share with other Longhorn fans, because not only is Laramie largely without hotel accommodations, but there are no nearby cities. Your best bet is Cheyenne, and that’s an hour away. It’s probably your best bet to stay in Denver (2 hours) or Fort Collins (1.5 hours), if you can’t find a place in laramie. I agree with seaute that you should fly to Denver on Friday, stay the night there, and then get up early and drive to Laramie on Saturday.
I don’t know about the local restaurant, bar, tailgating scene. i can tell you that Wyoming is pretty lawless, so just about anything you can do in texas you can probably do in Wyoming (don’t take that as gospel, just a general statement about how Wyoming works).
I wouldn’t try to buy tickets at the site the day of the game, only because your fellow Longhorns will have likely snapped most of them up. You should be able to buy them by calling the Wyoming ticket office, http://wyomingathletics.cstv.com/tickets/tickets-static-info/tickets-football.html
As for attractions, well . . . buy a lot of fireworks and porn. that’s about it. Most of the good stuff in wyoming is several hours to the west.
Everyone hates a pink-shirt-wearing communist.
Thank you for the info...
and thank you to those of you emailed me.
I think the suggestion of staying elsewhere and just driving in for the game is a sound one. Denver only being 2 hours away helps…I thought is was more like four or five.
Thanks again.

Worst fans . . .
According to every Ute Player I spoke with.
I had a couple Utah football players work for me years ago and they said never let your mom or girlfriend attend a game in Laramie. They are childish, churlish, and drunk. They’re extremely poor sports, but then, we beat the hell out of them regularly so it may simply be us, they are hard on BYU as well. Perhaps they will show you guys some respect, don’t hold your breath though.
They are commonly obnoxiously drunk. The town is not much to speak of, the altitude can wear your players out if you’re not acclimated.
Terrible sports, small state with an attitude about being disrespected. Wyomiing boys are always looking for a brawl so travel with others, I’ve been into it with these drunks before and they gang piled on. Seriously, they couldn’t hurt me because they were all drunk, but they tried to hold me and kick me. I asked a passerby for help, he was one of them so he offered to help hold me while they tried to pummel me.
Nothing about the place recommends it. That would be nothing. The greatest thing about them is we beat them to death most always. The second thing about them I like is when we win at all, no matter how much the margin. I don’t hate them, they’re too pathetic, especially when drunk, but I have no respect for the Wyoming fans, none whatsoever.
Attractions . . .
If it were me, I’d definitely go see the Grand tetons, the Park (Yellowstone) and hike/fly fish in the Jackson Hole area, it’s gorgeous, wonderful country. Then I’d drive to teh game at the last minute and leave right the hell after.
The nicest thing in Laramie is likely going to drunken Cowboy’s fans in their vomit.
Maybe.
Oh, this is important
If they wear the famous “Banana” uniform which is all hot urine yellow with a smidge of poo brown?
Take care to keep all sharp objects out of your friends’ and loved ones’ hands as they may gouge out their eyeballs rather than watch the game. You can see one here:

Cheers mate, sorry about the home and home too, you’ve a great coach and program and tradition there, good luck in 2009!

My Two Cents
1) Overview: Small town, not a lot going on. Fans are pretty rude to Utah fans, but they might be a little more cordial for Texas fans. Worth making the trek? Only for the football, in my opinion. Just be glad your game is in September and not the biting cold winds of November.
2) Lodging: If enough fans travel, you will fill up the hotels/motels pretty quickly, as there aren’t many of them. Cheyenne is also an option. Best bet is to stay in Denver or Fort Collins – they’re nicer places with more to do, and you won’t have to worry about run-ins with opposing fans.
3) Transportation: Fly into Denver and drive a rental car. Denver is 2 hours from Laramie, Fort Collins is 1.5. Salt Lake is 5-6 hours away, and the drive features scenic views (ha) of lots of sagebrush and antelope.
4) Restaurants/Bars: I didn’t go to a bar or even more than a drive-through restaurant when I was there. I don’t think you need to worry about missing anything in Laramie.
5) Tailgating: There’s tailgating in dirt lots and parking areas around the stadium. If you follow any posted signs you should be fine.
6) Tickets: Tickets shouldn’t be too hard to buy. There might be a little more demand for a game in September against a marquee out-of-conference opponent, but you might even be able to get tickets at the ticket box on game day (not that I would recommend that for a trip that far away). I don’t remember seeing any scalpers, actually.
7) Gameday Traditions: Don’t know of any.
8) Local Attractions: Nothing nearby, but there’s a lot to do in Denver and the areas around it. If you are dead-set on seeing the Tetons and Yellowstone, they’re about 7 hours away from Laramie and 9 hours away from Denver. I would try to fly into Idaho Falls (2 hours from Jackson Hole) or Salt Lake (5 hours from Jackson Hole), spend a few days in Yellowstone and the Tetons (both areas really are gorgeous, and I think every American should see Yellowstone at some point in their life), drive across Wyoming to Laramie for the game, and then fly out of Denver.
Once again, thanks to all of you for the info (and the warning)
I will definitely figure out a way to advise UT fans of the drunken debauchery that most likely awaits…but honestly, I can’t throw too many stones. Our fan base can drink with the best of them and worse, we definitely have our fair share when it comes to the overly obnoxious. I don’t know how the Bama fans treated you guys down in New Orleans, but I imagine Longhorns fans are pretty similar.
The Sherrif in Laramie better call for back-up because the smart money says the pokey will be full by Sunday morning that weekend.
Best of luck next season.

You as well
Also, the ‘Bama fans we re awesome. I’ve made friends with many. If I struck up a conversation they were sweet and infromative and wonderful and complimented us on our team and fans.
I saw one obnoxious drunk ’Bama fan pre game in New Orleans and a couple of same for Utah fans.
My experience with Longhorn fans is mature ones are fine, but do not get caught between OK and UT student drunks in Dallas—that is an ER trip waiting to happen, they do brawl.
