The Morning Blitz: Daily Utah links

Now that fall camp has ended and we're closing in on the season, there won't be any more practice reports. Of course, that doesn't mean there won't be any Ute news to report and that's what I want to establish here. So this is basically a carryover from that.

This marks the final week of any type of preseason speculation, so get it out of the way. I think we've all got to emotionally ready ourselves for that first loss and the end of Utah's long winning streak. Not that I hope it happens, but you know it's coming and how many of you are actually ready for it?

I know I'm not.

In fact, I remember 2005 when the Utes lost to TCU and how hard it was to take that loss. You know, Utah entered that game last losing to the Lobos in 2003 - a stretch longer than their current one - and the losing feeling was so foreign to me. Well Utah hasn't lost since the '07 Holy War and again, I find myself wondering what losing feels like.

I hope we don't find out and if we do, I really hope we only find out once.

Anyway, that's my little rant for the day.

Yeah right.

The first loss will tell a lot

I think how the Ute fans react to the loss will say a lot about where we are.

Will a lot of people jump off the bandwagon? If we take on 3-4 losses this season, will people lose the hype and not re-up their season tickets?

I think in both cases above, we’ll lose some fans, and that’s okay. I think we’ve had a net gain and the community of Ute fans is growing.

That first loss will suck. I can’t decide if it will hurt more if it comes to one of Oregon/TCU/BYU who I see as the class of our schedule and in some cases conference, or if I’ll I’ll be more pissed to lose to anyone else on the schedule which would be really disappointing.

It's tough to decide.

I mean, it’s like when you were a kid and you had to pull that band-aid off your leg. Do you do it quickly and get it over with or let it sit there and wait…and wait…and wait?

If Utah is to lose but one game this season, though, I say let it be Oregon. Get it out of the way and then build another winning streak that hopefully goes into 2011.

If Utah is destined for two or three losses, best to have it be Oregon than say Colorado State. At least then, we’d still control our conference destiny.

Either way, I am not looking forward to it. It was the same in 2005 and I barely made it out of that season alive.

Answer me this....

If the MWC is set on getting some good street cred (so to speak) then why do they continue to involve themselves in the screw-me bowl? (i.e. Vegas Bowl). I realize that the closeness factor plays a big part but if we’re ever gonna create some noise outside of BCS appearances, the MWC needs to stop settling for a 4th or 5th place Pac-10 team to face the MCW victors…..oh, well, things will be better when the stupid BCS contract ends and the suits will finally realize we deserve an automatic spot (more so than the Big Least)

Lou Holtz is an enigma...

I don’t think anyone has been able to figure him out yet.

You’ll notice I have a quote from Mr, Holtz on this site. During the Poinsettia Bowl, he said Utah had the best non-BCS talent in the country.

Well last year, he was all over the place in his claims for Utah and it seems that hasn’t changed.

But putting ND in the NC game? It ain’t happening. Even if the Irish go undefeated (they won’t), they’re still not getting in. Their lone tough game is against SC and that can’t be enough to pass a 1-loss Big 12 team.

2005

I remember that night in 2005 like it was yesterday. It is interesting how that first loss (after a nice winning streak) stays with you. I hated TCU for awhile after that. I’d like to think that because I have been through it before that this time around it will be easier—but I don’t think it will be. Just a few more days!!!

It didn't help the game was crushing.

Because it’s a game Utah should have won.

They dominated most of the first three quarters. Looked so sharp. I remember BJ finding (blank here) down field for a nice TD pass early in the game and thinking we were going to keep on rolling.

Then they came back.

And Utah was driving late in the fourth. Then the ref forgot to stop the clock and Utah was forced to burn a time out, which made it nearly impossible to move the drive any further and get into real FG range.

Of course, OT wasn’t any better with the pick play.

Ugh.

Yeah, that was tough to swallow.
