Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Saturday game day open thread

If you want to talk about any of the games going on today, do it here. There are some big ones, but I think it's safe to say most Ute fans will be focused on the Oklahoma-BYU game later tonight (kick off is at 5 MST).

What are your predictions? Will you be cheering for the Cougars or is it Boomer Sooner just for the next 24 hours?

Me? I can't cheer for BYU. It's just not in my blood.

I don't know if "cheer" is the right word

I might go for resigned to the fact that a win is very good for Utah, so a BYU win is infinitesimally acceptable.

Oklahoma has too much to lose.....

While some would call that an advantage for BYU, the fact of the matter is Oklahoma is just too talented for BYU to keep up for four quarters…..I can see the cougars playing it close for the first half but in the end, I think their secondary has too many hole and Sam Bradford will pick them apart. The best the Cougars can hope for is a few early mistakes from the Sooners and get a few touchdowns early. (either that or Sam Bradford, getting injured).

I agree.

A lot of people use the TCU ‘05 game to show Oklahoma’s potential to lose.

That Oklahoma team wasn’t very good. They weren’t bad, either, but they only finished the year 8-4 and didn’t return near the talent these Sooners do this year.

USC-SJSU should be interesting.

It’ll give us a good look at what to expect from the Spartans.

by JazzyUte on Sep 5, 2009 1:53 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

USC's offense looks lackluster right now...

But I’m not sure if it’s SJSU or just first game struggles.

Right now, the Spartans are winning 3-0.

by JazzyUte on Sep 5, 2009 2:18 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

After a slow start, USC is abusing SJSU.

The Spartans don’t do anything special on offense and their defense is getting ripped right now.

Hats off to BYU.

They’re playing OU better than I would have thought. If they keep this up, it’ll be Sugar Bow Part II!

by JazzyUte on Sep 5, 2009 6:25 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Bradford's injury looks game-ending...

We’ll see, though.

I think BYU has this one in the bag if that’s the case.

BYU is about to pull the upset!

Huge win for the Cougars if they hold.

by JazzyUte on Sep 5, 2009 7:59 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

BYU wins.

Huge victory. Sucks for me, but they just got their toughest game out of the way.

Sucks for all Utah fans…great win for the conference tho

GO UTES!!

I have no problem with it

I’m in favor of the MWC winning its nonconference games.

by Ute in DC on Sep 5, 2009 8:32 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

know you don't.

But you’re not in Utah. You don’t have to put up with their shit.

Not saying you’re wrong, it’s just you’re in a better situation to tune them out.

Here, if either Utah or BYU gets a HUGE win, that dominates the discussion for weeks.

This game dominates the discussion for weeks – even if Utah somehow beats Oregon.

by JazzyUte on Sep 5, 2009 8:34 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, You're right

But I did live there in 1990. I remember the hype machine after they beat Miami. So I empathize. But I dealt with it.

I also lived there in 1984, but I have no memory of that.

by Ute in DC on Sep 5, 2009 8:37 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm pretty bummed right now.

Mostly because now I have to hear how great they are and everything that goes along with it.

Preapre to eat some crow boys...

You know we’re gonna hear all the BYU fans (both true and band wagon) spout off that this is their year. Congrats boys, you accomplished what most didn’t think was possible.

by GambitUte on Sep 5, 2009 8:34 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Key word: think

They will think that for sure. But until they do it Utah still has national cred. If you already forgot…Utah is also 1-0…

GO UTES!!

WTG Cougars

Congrats.

Of the two teams, Oklahoma did a worse job of repairing their O line. Bradford was getting tattooed.

by MeanBobMean on Sep 5, 2009 9:13 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

OU's line was very unimpressive.

I don’t know. The Sooners sucked from the get-go.

I bet Bradford is wishing he went pro right about now…

by JazzyUte on Sep 5, 2009 9:18 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I knew they had to rebuild their line, I just don’t know why they chose guys who had never played football to rebuild it with.

Wait for the excuses from the whiny BCS boys, they’re sure to come.

by MeanBobMean on Sep 5, 2009 10:10 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm starting to wonder if I'm a jinx....

I told someone today if BYU had a real shot to win Bradford had to go down….well, check that. I’m not gonna make excuses though…..the coug’s didn’t win this one just because Bradford went down.

by GambitUte on Sep 5, 2009 9:16 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Hard to say what the game would've looked like had Bradford not gone down.

But one thing in BYU’s favor is the fact the game was tied 7-7 when he went out.

That’s big because they played the Sooners pretty much even in the first half and ultimately did the same thing in the second half.

Chokelahoma

Oklahoma blew their chances in this game. 1st down on the 2 yard line and u can’t find a way to get it in the end zone. Than u get a dumb penalty which forces u to kick the field goal. Than BYU kicks it out of bounds and u can’t get it close enough, the last pass the guy just dropped the ball. They choked

Even though I hate BYU I still like what this will do for the conference. We could have 3 teams ranked in the top 15(or higher) when we enter conference play,TCU should take care of business back east and Utah comes through vs. San Jose(their offense looked terrible today) and Oregon(same thing). But if BYU blows the game vs. Florida State at home than their new high ranking will take a huge hit.

by utahmanami on Sep 6, 2009 12:22 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

It's very possible Oklahoma has a season similar to 2005.

If you’ll remember, they opened against TCU and lost and never recovered.

8-5 or 9-4 could really put a damper on the Cougars’ win.

It was a mess from the start. This is why I hate preseason rankings. OU got the benefit of the doubt because they returned Bradford, even though they had some offensive turnovers.

They’re not the 3rd best team in the nation.

Is BYU a top-ten team? Jury is still out. Of course, they’ll have ample time to prove their worth.

But beyond that, I’m focused on Utah now. The Utes still can go undefeated and if BYU is a top-five team when the Holy War rolls around and Utah knocks them off – we’re sitting pretty.

I’ll say this, I was not as impressed with their victory as I was with the Sugar Bowl. That isn’t to take away what they did, but the reality is they barely won and didn’t look all that good while doing it. The game felt very similar to the Oregon-BSU one Thursday night.

BYU

Did put together the drive they had to in order to win. Hall gets my respect for that. Unga did not play at all did he?

Bradford out 24 weeks, there is OUs built in excuse for imploding.

by MeanBobMean on Sep 6, 2009 5:03 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do feel bad for Bradford.

He was on the top of the world last season and now this…

OU is done. They’re going to lose at least four games.

by JazzyUte on Sep 6, 2009 2:08 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

BYU also lost their top LB early in the first quarter.

Their offensive line was just as inexperienced as Oklahoma and they lost 2 starters in practice.

by utesfan100 on Sep 7, 2009 12:00 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I also noticed

There are a lot of teams ranked ahead of the Utes that I feel we are better than. But than again I still don’t mind the underdog role and having to earn your high ranking

by utahmanami on Sep 6, 2009 12:31 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Good win for BYU and the MWC...

…but I’ll be surprised if OU does better than 8-4 this year.

The good news is that Max still throws it up for grabs whenever he’s under pressure. He got picked twice, but it could have been more like 4 or 5. And he still seems to be attracted to red shirts :)

Unrelated to that game...

Colorado State looking really good against Colorado.

I thought their experienced o-line would be a huge asset.

My post a few days ago

I’m not sure if CSU will finish in the top 3, but I bet they are ahead of AFA and UNLV.

by Ute in DC on Sep 6, 2009 9:58 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Too soon to say.

One game does not a season make.

I think CSU finishes about 4th, maybe fifth depending on where AFA ends up.

MWC 2, Big 12 1

I like it. I think Texas evens things out next week.

Being in Panama City Florida I am can report that FSU fans are dreading playing BYU now.

Hopefully the MWC can score one on the Big 10 next week.
