BlogPoll week one ballot
Week one is in the books and it provided some surprises, but mostly things went as expected.
BYU is this week's highest riser, as they leaped nine spots to 10th after their victory over Oklahoma. Those Sooners dropped 13 spots to 15th, while Miami and Michigan State entered this week's top-25.
Do you agree, disagree? Let me know.

I really thought...
Boise St. would control it’s own fate if they won out. However with BYU beating Oklahoma the Mtn West has once again set itself up for a BCS run. If any of the big 3 in the Mtn West can go undefeated I think they will leap Boise St. and go to a big bowl. It’s going to be tough to go undefeated in this conference though. We shall see.

Notre Dame deserves to be ranked
They looked impressive over Nevada. I thought Nevada had a good enough offense to score against Notre Dame, but the Irish defense was strong enough to get the shutout. I also thought Nevada was a top 50 team this year so the blowout victory says something.
Drop out Iowa. They were completely unimpressive in their 17-16 victory over FCS team Northern Iowa.

You're right.
Good call. ND did look impressive. I just hate the idea of putting them in at 1-0 after they went 7-6 last season.
But they shouldn’t be judged solely on the results of last year.

Miami
Although last night’s win over Florida State was thrilling, i’m not convinced with Miami. Their defense couldn’t stop the seminoles when they needed to and got lucked out on the last play. I would put them near the bottom of the poll.
I would put Cal up a spot or two for annihilating Maryland.
Ohio State did not look like a top 10 ten. I know Navy is pretty decent team, but you are playing your home opener and this game isn’t supposed to be that close.

Ohio State
Ohio State needs to be out of the top 10. They did nothing to prove their position.

Maybe so...
But what team deserves to be there over them?
Maybe Cal? They’re there by default.

I think Mizzou has a better case
than Iowa at #25.
I thought Illinois was a fringe top-25 team before the season, and Mizzou crushed them.

Agreed
That was my biggest question, why Iowa rather than Mizzou?

I did take out Iowa in my final ballot
But put in Notre Dame.

Quick question
I know the U wasn’t very impressive early, but in the 2nd half, they dominated.
On the other hand, TCU didn’t even play a game.
Shouldn’t the U be ranked higher than TCU then?
TCU’s future sched is looking weaker too, given that Virginia just fell hard to a D-II team.

Toss up
How could we know at this point? But, yeah, at least we played one and won.

Is there really that much difference between 16 and 17? :P
by JazzyUte on Sep 8, 2009 12:10 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
And we won’t know after this week unless one of us loses. Virginia is terrible.
by MeanBobMean on Sep 8, 2009 12:45 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Difference? Nope.
But I think, given simply that Utah played while TCU was on a bye, that Utah should get the benefit of the doubt & be 1 spot higher.

poll looks about right to me
We all know polls this early are flat out absurd and can hurt derserving teams (Utah ranked number 25 preseason in 2004), but if it has to be this way at least there is some appropriate jumps in the poll. BYU at no. 10 is exactly where I would have put them. ND absolutely should be in the top 25 considering their talent level and that Nevada is a solid team especially offensively and ND’s D shut them down. It was refreshing, however, to see the media not giving ND more credit than they deserve.
Ultimately these things will work themselves out. Pollsters know that the preseason polls are always flawed and there will continue to be big jumps and falls in the first few weeks before we get a real picture of the teams.

0-1?
The way I see it is that if you lost your first game and haven’t won a game yet…why are you still ranked? I could care less if you are Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Georgia, or even Utah.
You haven’t won a game. You know for a fact if Utah or BYU would have lost they wouldn’t be ranked. So why does OU, Georgia, and VT get the pass? I know that they are probably still going to pull out. Maybe even win out. And I also know they lost to other ranked teams but why should they be ranked? They haven’t proved anyone to anybody yet, except that they can’t hang with ranked opponents….just a thought…
Plus I would rather not see ND in the poll this week. If they beat Michigan, then we can talk about it.

Not that I disagree...
I’d rather start this whole thing three weeks in.

That said
Oklahoma hung with a ranked opponent, despite being without a star TE, staring a TE at C, and losing their Heisman-caliber QB to end the first half.
Georgia & VT… yeah, they were outplayed. Or at least highly disappointing, though I might’ve just had high hopes.
And how about Cincinnati? They totally dominated on the road against a team that was expected to be amongst the top in the Big East.

Cincinnati's victory was fun and cute and all
But it’s hard for me to take a Big East team seriously. They just couldn’t make it in the week-in week-out grind of a MWC schedule.

Ute in DC...
you are my hero. Just for that last comment. They wouldn’t live through the grind of the MWC. They can’t even survive their own conference.
