Surprise move - but with how many were turning them down, I was wondering if Whittingham's name would soon show up on their list.

i think it's a bad choice. coaches who keep moving around until they find the perfect job
usually do not fare well. remember dennis franchoine. he has not headcoached in fbs since the texas a&m debacle.

I think this was a sacrifice hire by USC.
They know Kiffin isn’t really ready to take the job, but they have sanctions coming down soon so they can fire him if he’s not BCS-bowling by the time the sanctions end and then they can replace him with someone better who will take the job this time because they won’t have to live up to Pete Carroll’s legacy. If Kiffin surprises everyone and starts doing a fantastic job, then they won’t need to fire him and they’ll look like geniuses.

i like what the would be recruit said in usa today about going to tennessee. when he found out that lane kiffin bolted he decided to go to north carolina. usa today asked him why he did not goto usc. he said he could not trust a man who took another coaching position when kiffin had told him that tenn. would be the usc of the sec. that is one smart kid. who knows maybe los angeles get’s an nfl franchise and lane kiffin wants that job and gets it. that might be his ultimate dream job. then usc gets screwed like they deserve. how many people turned to usc?
