Utes finish ranked 18th in both polls

Utah finished the season ranked 18th in both the media and coaches' poll. It marks only the second time in school history Utah has had back-to-back top-25 finishes.

Texas, who gave Alabama a scare, finished second and Florida third in both polls. Which means the 14-0 Broncos failed to capture any national championship momentum and fell to fourth. They also received zero first place votes.

TCU was the highest Mountain West team, finishing 6th. BYU was ranked 12th in both polls.

Good season. Now can 2010 get here?

Playoff Pac

Jazzy, the BCS seems to be genuinely theatened by thePlayoff Pac action comittee. It seems like they are one of the reasons that the BCS started their own facebook page. Would it be possible for you to encourage the readers of this blog (since we are all against the BCS) to show their support by becoming fans of the playoff pac facebook page? It is a quick and easy way to show that there is public support for what they are doing.

What's the link?

I can probably put a link up. Certainly agree it’s important we fight back against the BCS.

i'm excited about the utes next year.

we have three aq bcs teams. pitt who also has clemson and miami on it’s schedule, iowa state who won their bowl game and the late season game with n.d. they are rebuilding but i still hope they have 5 wins when we play them. a nationwide audience to impress. our offense will be great. we can go 4 rb’s deep along with 2 qb’s with ncaa experience. we could use cain like we did corbin louks or maybe use him as a wr b/c that is the one place we are thin. the defense gets hurt quite a bit but we have players like kruger’s brother who got some playing time and his brother now starts for the baltimore ravens. coach whitt always find defensive gems too. i’m really excited for next year and when we play tcu i want the same score they put on us but add a td to rub it in thier faces. no quarter next year. every team in the mwc beside byu should be better too. air force and wyoming could each get to 10 wins. i think the mwc as a whole will set the record for most wins against aq bcs teams which is nine which we hold. i think we can get to 11 wins. i still want tcu to win 11 games. i just want our team to stomp them and go undefeated.

i'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. i was building a house, i don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. bang. "unforgiven"

It would be epic if both Utah and TCU are undefeated in November for their showdown.

Could you imagine? Utah would be at least a top-five team. TCU, too. Maybe #3 versus #4 for a good shot at the championship?

The thought makes me all warm inside. :P

by JazzyUte on Jan 8, 2010 8:53 PM MST up reply actions

that would be epic

I know a QB who wants another shot at TCU . I have high hopes for Wynn.

We may get close...

but the BCS will NEVER let a “non-BCS” team play for its coveted “championship”. They will find some way to keep up out. Also, I believe that no team in the history of college football has ever won the National Championship. All they have won are titles. Titles are given by people. They are not earned. How can you claim to be “National Champions” when there are other teams who play in the same level/division of football that you do that are undefeated? Doesn’t this violate some fundamental law of physics?

tell me how they stop boise stae if they go undefeated

espn has them #2. the lowest i see the coaches putting them is number 6. won’t matter, they have va. tech on oct 4th. they will be both 3-0. i just checked their schedules. they only way i see the computers or people in charge of the bcs could shut bsu out is if the referee’s screwed over boise in game at fed ex field. it happened in the sec at least two times. lsu, arkansas got really screwed so they could prop up florida and bama. florida should not even be in the top twenty. no tebow. maybe no urban meyer and at least 55% of their team gone. i think boise and bama will cruise to undefeated season’s barring injuries. only game boise has to worry about is va. tech. i wonder whose conference referee’s will be deciding the game. i’m still very excited about the utes too but i can see utah as high as 14th coming into next season. we all know it’s where you start but we do have three aq bcs teams on schedule and i think we take them all. i really want coach whitt to run up the score on pitt. they will be breaking in new qb and i expect 2 int’s i hope we shove it down their throats by the score of 35 -17. screw mark may and his smirking face. i hope tcu is unbeaten too when we play them. i hope we beat them by the same score they beat us but add one more td. we need the mwc to be strong. we want all of our teams to kick azz in the ooc schedule. that is how we get ourselves higher. i think we can break the 9 aq bcs wins we had two years ago. i think we can get to 11 or 12. then bill hancock will have no choice but to give the mwc an aq bcs bowl bid every year. utah 13-0 with four wins over aq bcs conferences. that will show the nation and we have a nationwide audience to impress when we play n.d. later in the season. peace.

If either BSU or Utah win go 12-0

They will have a legit shot the NCS game unless you have Alabama at 12-0 and say USC or Texas or Oklahoma at 12-0 again because they will use SOS to put them ahead of us. But if we go 12-0, which I feel we will not do, and ther eis only one major ocnference team undefeated?

We should get the nod. This last year Alabama got some breaks to go 12-0, as we did in 2008. It’s more than difficult to win them all, it’s amazing, it requires a few balls bouncing your way.

Notre Dame is going to beat our asses next year. Brian Kelly is the real deal, just watch.

by Aardvark on Jan 11, 2010 7:10 AM MST up reply actions

usc and texas will not even be close to 12-0

usc will be lucky to win 9 games next year. texas needs to break in a new qb. ohio state would be the best team to maybe go 12-0 but they do not have cg and the big ten always finishes there season first. that is not good for final bcs poll. not palying can have you fall back in poll. if boise state goes undefeated they could not be stopped by the computers. the sec will be down. florida will be lucky to win 10 games and that is generous. all the usual suspects are having rebuilding years. next year is the perfect storm for boise state imo. i hope utah goes 12-0 too but it’s where you start in preseason. one good thing is we had two non aq bcs conferences get in and if boise gets to ncg, utah would get to play a powerful aq bcs opponent. it’s looking up for the mwc and boise while the so called bigger schools are going to have to work harder.

Agreed

The field is levelling out. Our team and Boise have made kids say “hell, I can go somewhere else and win and contribute.”

Notre Dame though will be scary.

Also, Texas’ QB will be more than competitive next year. Huge upside on him, cannon arm, big and mobile.

by Aardvark on Jan 12, 2010 6:17 AM MST up reply actions

why are you so upbeat about notre dame?

brian kelly might be a great coach but nobody builds a program in one year. nick saban is considered the best coach now and it took years for him to win a ncg. it’s great he won it but it took time. who is n.d.’s qb next year. they have one kid who has some experience but he had acl or mcl surgery and may never be the same. most coaches like to use there own recruits so i expect b.k. to use a freshman. i say the best they do is 7-5.

by wolfmanshowlforever on Jan 12, 2010 2:52 PM MST up reply actions

Because

They recruited well, they lacked only one thing: coaching. They got that now, and coach/talent no coach/no talent, they are tough at home, which is where we play them.

They might do 7-5, but they don’t go begging for kids to play there. We will faces ome serious, raw talent on both sides of the ball—talent with something to prove.

Maybe they’ll suck record wise, but new coach, new fire, they will play hard this next year.

Notre Dame should be good next year, but . . .

. . . Utah should be better. I posted about this already, but Notre Dame loses 4/5 OL, their QB, top two WR, both fullbacks, their #2 TE, and their top two backup OL. They have their #3 WR, RB, and top TE back. That’s it. Our defense should be able to hold that offense down all day long.

They do return a lot of defense, but if you know Kelly and you know Notre Dame’s defense this year, that shouldn’t worry you, especially considering we return 4/5 OL, our QB, #2 and #3 WR, both top tailbacks, etc. Our offense should be humming by the time we hit the Notre Dame game, and their defense won’t be the best we’ll see (this year’s TCU team is better, and it’s not close). If our defense is slightly above average, we should be able to keep them from scoring and give our Offense a real chance to shine.

Everyone hates a pink-shirt-wearing communist.

Have a hard time seeing ND beating our asses.

They may win…but it won’t be a slaughter like you predict.

by JazzyUte on Jan 12, 2010 12:18 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, I don't mean slaughter us . . .

But then, I didn’t think TCU would either.

I just think they’ll be too much at their place. Gotta say though, Wynn doesn’t look overawed anywhere.

Great thing going for us? It’s Notre Dame, we’re just another game to them except beating an upstate perreninial bowl team will help them immensely and you know Kellyhasus circled as a team they can beat and a win they need.

by Aardvark on Jan 13, 2010 8:50 AM MST up reply actions

Notre Dame

Gets us after an open week, and before Army. They won’t be looking past us.

It’s so late in season, November 13, we’ll know by then how both teams are panning out.

Utah gets Notre Dame so late . . . we’ll get them sandwhiched between two MWC foes, a prescripption for Utah to lose their heads.
