Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Jordan Wynn and Shaky Smithson named MWC Players of the Week

After Utah's 68-27 thrashing of Iowa State, both Jordan Wynn and Shaky Smithson were named Mountain West Players of the Week.

Wynn led the Utah offense with 23 of 31 completions, 325 yards and two touchdowns - one of his most impressive performances yet as a Ute. Smithson, the Special Teams Player of the Week, returned a punt for 78 yards early in Utah's win over the Cyclones. This is the fourth week out of five Utah has played where at least one player has been named to the conference player of the week list.

Let's keep it up next week and congrats to both Wynn and Smithson!

Wynn's running

is improving a lot. He is not a running QB by any means. But there were 3 third down plays that Wynn couldn’t find anyone and he was aware enough to know exactly where the 1st down marker was and he ran and either slid or ran out of bounds getting the 1st down each time.

That was really good to see, because that was something he lacked last season, and something that has distinguished Cain as a better running QB. Wynn is becoming a very good QB.

I don't pour beer on Max Hall's family often, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

This offense is just so light years better than last year.

The play calling is great. The execution is great.

Last year we were an okay team. This year we are fanfntastic.

as long as he doens't try anything fancy

probably won’t see any more spin moves from Wynn but if he just keep it moving up field he isn’t bad.

So if Wynn produces a 13-0 campaign in his SOPHOMORE season...

Would he instantly be considered the greatest QB at Utah?

I know, I know, we’ve got six (seven counting the bowl) games left.

But this team is looking unstoppable.

BJ and Alex Smith

Are the obvious 2 candidates. I don’t remember Scott Mitchell, or maybe I’d have an opinion there.

Brian J: Not an amazing QB, but was the most clutch player I’ve ever seen. He is my favorite Ute of all time, but Wynn may have more talent. We will see after we play TCU, ND, Air Force, and BYU. And then hopefully a top 5 team in a bowl.

Alex Smith: I remember thinking he was the greatest QB of all time. Wynn needs to run the ball better, but passing-wise (Minus that pathetic interception in the 1st quarter), I don’t see a big difference between these two.

Let’s see how Wynn finishes the season. I think if we go 13-0, it would be hard to argue that he isn’t the best we’ve had. He still needs to learn how to run the ball better, but he’s looking very very good.

Utah had 1,026 combined yards against Iowa State

link from sports illustrated.

Utah trailed Iowa State 14-10 at the start of the second quarter Saturday. By halftime the Utes led 41-14. They wound up winning 68-27 against a team that beat Texas Tech the week before, and, in doing so, amassed one of the most remarkable stats I’ve seen. Between total offense (593 yards), kick returns (168), punt returns (156) and interception returns (109), Utah ball-handlers amassed a combined 1,026 yards. Naturally, the Utes dropped a spot in the AP poll.

How about these stats for Utah?

#3 in scoring offense
They have run only 312 offensive plays. They rank 110 out of 120 in number of offensive plays run, yet they are the #3 scoring offense in the nation.

2 things:
1) Efficient offense (When they decide to move they can score fast.)
2) Great special teams (Notice Shaky getting another special teams player of the week award.)

smithson did get on the espn highlights. is he just a sophmore or jr?

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. The most hated and misunderstood person on the MMA blogs.. Utah and Boise take care of business in week one. Don't be surprised if they both go undefeated.

Shaky is a Sr.

JC transfer, was with the team last year.

However, Reggie Dunn is a Soph.

He could break all of Steve Smith’s records by the time he graduates…assuming he stays for his Sr. year.

I agree

It’s a combination of both. Utah is 12th in the nation in yards per play:

1 Nebraska 8.3
2 Michigan 7.81
3 Boise St. 7.72
4 Hawaii 7.58
5 Nevada 7.4
12 Utah 7.02
60 Pittsburgh 5.61
120 New Mexico 3.76

Utah is tops in the nation in some categories that I just made up.

5 Oklahoma St. 1.463878327
60 Wake Forest 2.393258427
120 New Mexico 5.573333333

3 Oregon 10.93023256
4 Boise St. 11.26666667
5 Oklahoma St. 11.66666667
60 Miami (FL) 18.78947368
120 San Jose St. 56.33333333

Yards per point:
Rank Name Plays/TD
1 Utah 9.75
2 Nebraska 10.64285714
3 Oregon 10.93023256
4 Boise St. 11.26666667
5 Oklahoma St. 11.66666667
60 Miami (FL) 18.78947368
120 San Jose St. 56.33333333

Yards per TD:
Rank Name Yards/TD
1 Utah 68.46875
2 Maryland 74.85714286
3 Florida 77.68
4 Army 79
5 Oregon 79.11627907
60 Texas A&M 107.4090909
120 San Jose St. 269.1666667

I keep accidentally eating my pets. Maybe I should get something less appetizing, like a cat instead of a Twinkie.

Awesome stats

I love made up stats. It is just so nice to make numbers say exactly what you want. And usually they work really well on BYU fans who aren’t clever enough to figure it out.
