Utes 7th in USA Today Coaches Poll, 8th in Media

Utah surged two spots up the rankings and now are 7th in this week's USA Today's Coaches Poll.

It matches their ranking at the end of the 2008 regular season - with five weeks still left to play football.

The AP Poll has Utah 8th, behind Missouri.

Just to compare - Utah clocked in at 13th in 2008 when they were 7-0. So this year's team is out-polling those Utes by a considerable margin. The 2004 squad was 10th.

Looks good!

This team, with respect to 08, is better at this point in the season. the 08 squad was a cartiac team that found ways to win and finish until they put it all together and crushed Bama. We’ll find out just how special this team is in two weeks. If we can’t beat AF we don’t deserve to talk about" Special" that’s why I move the test pass AF and squarely on TCU.

What a good morning

I love waking up late on a Sunday morning, clicking here as my first link (ignoring everything else), and seeing this good news. Coffee and BlockU. Great morning.

It’s kind of cool to see the power of the MWC, if you include Boise State too, compared to other conferences.

Three teams I despise: Georgetown Hoyas, BYU Cretins, and the New York Yankees.

On the AP poll, Jon Wilner has done it again

Utah is ranked 16th followed closely by?? San Diego State? at number 19????

I gotta say, tho, TCU is starting to piss me off...

I’m sure it evens out in the computers, but in human perception, we’re playing the two non-Utah/TCU top Mountain West teams a week after they play the Frogs.

Air Force would have been a respectable game LAST WEEK in terms of poll position, but the Frogs got ’em before us.

SDSU could have been ranked heading into their game against the Utes, but TCU plays them a week before we do.

Good for TCU, which I guess is ultimately good for Utah’s ranking – but it’d be nice, especially in terms of the SDSU game, to play @ a ranked team this season. Not gonna happen – unless the Aztecs knock off the Frogs.

That just makes Nov. 6th all the sweeter

We should have gameday here which will give us a national audience to smash TCU up.

The way I see it TCU is a very very good football team, but that’s their ceiling. I don’t think they are an awe-inspiring team.

Utah can be and has shown this season that they have it in them. I think we are going to really hang a number on Air Force and then it’ll be TCU’s turn.

AF should have won tehir games

Then the point would be moot as we’d have three ranked teams in our conference.

SDSU will be no cakewalk.

Season Starts this next week

5 games, which are 5 of the 6 hardest games of the year for us. I am not worried about being so low in the polls, because given the next 5 weeks, if we win out, the polls and computers will like us more.

The converse will be true for Boise and TCU. TCU because they lose to us. Boise because their signature win of the year will be week 1, which the voters will have forgotten, and because VT will probably lose to Miami (and maybe GT).

I’m ok with all the talk being about TCU and Boise, because in 2 weeks from today, we will jump up to #4 on the polls, and be one of 3 or 4 undefeated teams remaining, with a signature win against another top 10 team.

All that said, TCU still scares the hell out of me. It’s going to be a very tough game. Hopefully our defense can cause the turnovers we need, and don’t get banged up or let down against Air Force the week before.

if we win the rest of our games and mizzou and msu and oregon all lose (plus tcu lose) we will end up #2 imo in final bcs rankings

i say either usc or osu will beat oregon. it would be better if it was osu b/c it’s last game of the season. auburn gives bama second lose and we surely surpass boise b/c we have much tougher las t five games. mizzou has nebraska this week and msu has iowa this week.

High Hopes

I don’t see this happening, although I appreciate the optimism.

  1. - Auburn – I think they run the table – I think we should actually hope this is the case, so that LSU and Alabama don’t pass us up — An SEC team will likely get in – We may as well hope it is an undefeated one.
  2. - Oregon – I think they run the table – With their toughest test yet being this weekend with USC – We should be rooting against them if we want any chance.
  3. - Boise – I’m about 90% sure they run the table, with their only semi-competitive game being against Nevada – Obviously, we should be hoping Nevada wins that one
  4. - TCU – Lose to Utah
  5. - MSU – I think they lose to Iowa this weekend, and maybe one more
  6. - Alabama – I think they lose to Auburn – but if they win out, Utah won’t jump them
  7. - Mizz – I think they lose to Nebraska this weekend, and possibly the Big 12 championship
    Other Possible Jumpers
Ohio St. – If they win out, and don’t win the Big 10, they may get picked over us, at least for a BCS Bowl, even if ranked lower
Oklahoma/Nebraska – May still win out and knock Mizz out of the Big 12 championship, and one may jump us in the polls

Finally, I even think it’s a stretch to jump BSU. They are given a lot of love by the voters, if nothing else because they have earned it over the past 4 years with constant complaining.

I don’t think a national championship is a real possibility, but who knows what will happen if Utah wins out with convincing wins over the big teams? We would have earned it, in light of our amazing schedule (4 ranked teams) that was conveniently ignored in 2008.

Disagree with one of your points...

If Auburn and Oregon win out, the Broncos will fall to third and Utah will probably climb to 4th. I think, with their computer strength, they would pass BSU in the BCS.

The Broncos are only ahead of TCU right now because they’re 2nd in the nation. Drop them to third and the Frogs leap (ha) them in the BCS. Utah will be in a similar situation.

by JazzyUte on Oct 24, 2010 11:41 PM MDT up reply actions

Utah needs to be a lot closer than just one spot behind BSU...

We’re only going to make about .0600 up in the computers. The MWC is down, and the WAC is up (wins v. MWC & Pac-10 outside of BSU), so there’s not the disparity that there has been in years past.

If we’re not right on Boise St.‘s tail in points (meaning that about 30% of the voters have us above BSU), the computers aren’t going to get us there.

by Middy_U on Oct 25, 2010 10:21 AM MDT up reply actions

Nope...

Look at TCU. The Frogs are almost TIED with TCU in the BCS.

Utah will have a better computer ranking than Boise State when the season ends. It could be by a comfortable margin

The thing is, BSU being 2nd HELPS FAR MORE than BSU being 3rd. If Utah is 4th and BSU is third and the votes are extremely narrow, the BCS puts Utah ahead of the Broncos.

IF Boise State had dropped to third this week in the human polls, TCU would be ahead of them in the BCS right now.

tcu will jump boise this week. boise plays on tuesday or thursday. nobody remembers tuesday game

baylor is ranked. i saw their schedule. they have okie and okie state. they can do tcu and utah a big favor as can pitt who i think runs the table in the big east and iowa state will probably finish 7-5. that helps utah alot. lets just hope notre dame can beat tulsa and i think army before utah plays them on national tv. if we play like we did vs iowa state and just crush n.d. i’ll bet we would be the lead story on espn as long as we beat tcu. remember it took msu a fake fg to win there game in south bend. we win big, it looks good on soo many levels. oregon has to play usc and its basically a revenge game and usc’s bowl game. i’ll give the 40% chance for upset.
