Utah ranks 10th in the AP poll

Utah has cracked the top-ten for the first time since the 2008 season. The Utes, who are coming off a bye, are ranked 10th in the AP Top-25, three spots higher than they were last week.

The Coaches' Poll has just been released and the Utes are 10th there, as well.

Pretty cool...

no 1 loss teams ahead of Utah.

I’m kinda surprised that Arkansas and LSU aren’t ahead of us.

LSU

Is kind of surprised they don’t have more losses.

LSU looked bad and ARK can't finish.

ISU had a big win putting up 50+ on TX-Tech. Looking forward to a good game!!!! Love that AF is ranked this week (Lets all hope they don’t knock off TCU before us!!)

Iowa St. game looks tougher now

And it will be our first true road game, New Mexico doesn’t count lol. We’ll have a lot to prove as we are now ranked 10th.

From what I've seen..

Utha hasn’t been challenged as far as playing a clean game no penalties no turnovers but I think the speed of our offense is enough to give us wins at ISU and ND. I really think our offense may be a step behind Stanford’s and our defense is young but synced & fast.. special teams are what worries me.

ESPN has called LSU lucky in their past 2 wins, and Ark has their one loss to Alabama. I’m not surprised with rankings. Their top 10 ranking is a sign of respect the 2008, 2004 teams. The difference between this year and those 2 undefeated years is that voters were unwilling to vote the Utes high into the rankings mid season.

Utah didn't enter the top-ten until week nine in both 2004 and 2009 (late October).

We’re only at week five. Imagine where we’ll be in four weeks if we continue to win!

good to see the Utes move up...

but I always prefer to fly under the radar until at least the TCU game.

by SanFranUte on Oct 3, 2010 12:36 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

We can't fly under the radar this season...

We need to be as close to Boise State as possible and it means we’ve got to be well-positioned heading into that TCU game.

Remember, the BCS selects the highest non-AQ conference team ranked in the top-12 (I think). If Boise is ahead of Utah, they don’t have to pick the Utes for a BCS bowl game.

We don’t want to run the risk of being on the outside looking. Last year, if Oklahoma State had knocked off Oklahoma in the final regular season game, they would’ve taken Boise State’s spot in the Fiesta. That’s how close it was.

So we need to gain ground on the Broncos. If we’re only a spot behind them when the season ends, we very well might have the computers help in passing them.

Highest ranked CONFERENCE CHAMPION in the top 12.

Which means Navy, Army and (next year) BYU have to be in the top 2 for a guaranteed bid. If BYU was 3rd this year and Boise was 4th, Boise gets the bid and not BYU (of course, that’s so unlikely to happen as to be not worth talking about, but funny regardless).

But if we’re in the top 5-6 and Boise gets the auto bid, I think we still get selected as an at-large (although hopefully NOT to play Boise).

The rules are unclear on what happens if the championship game representative is from a non-BCS conference. It may be that if there is another non-BCS conference champion in the top 12 then they get that auto-bid (since the #1 and #2 spots are auto-bids regardless of conference championship status, i.e. Nebraska in 2001)

If we go the rest of the season undefeated...

do you still think Boise stays above us? I don’t think so.

Not sure Utah should be in top 10

They need to beat someone first. Pitt appears to be a mid-level Big East team (which isn’t saying much, and I’m a Big East fan). It’s too bad about Pitt, because their weakness is not going to help BCS standings. I don’t think Iowa State is going to be easy, and then there’s AF and ND away, neither of which are going to be quick and easy.

I’m unconvinced that Utah has been tested, though they have literally slaughtered the low level teams, which sometimes they haven’t in the past.

We’ll see.

BTW, I think that Utah, TCU and Boise State are no longer teams that the BCS just hopes go away. I think they’ve move up in attractiveness. Utah going to the Pac-12 might make it a popular choice if all goes well. Maybe Rose Bowl?

Geez, I get caught up in everyone’s optimism here. I’ll stick with we’ll see.

I agree with you

It’s tough to rank this Utes team in top 10, we need a big road win and this is why we have this game at Iowa State with a lot to prove. We’ll see how good we really are.

Except beating a 2-2 ISU team really doesn't count for much.

At the very best ISU finishes 2nd behind Nebraska. We can only hope!

East Coast Bias or Pac 12 Homer??

I think Oregon should be #1 after last nights game and Stanford no less than 11. Could any SEC Big 10 or Pig XII handle either one of those offenses??? I highly doubt it, Okla struggled with AF’s triple option and USU’s pistol…

Expect West Coast offenses to dominate until the East figure them out.

Question?

Is the first time in the Whittingham era that Utah has been ranked higher than Florida?
