Sausan Shakerin career ended against Notre Dame

Kyle Whittingham informed the media today that Shakerin has been medically disqualified from continuing his football career after suffering another concussion during the Irish game Saturday.

That's just some tough news right there and really puts the weekend into perspective.

Thoughts go out to Shak and his family. This must be a very difficult time for him.

Very sad.

I feel bad for Shak. He showed a ton of potential, but just had a lot of bad luck with injuries. He probably would have been the starter at RB next season, with both Wide and Asiata graduating.

That's awful

He was a great player, he was always trying so hard, working so hard. Injured his whole career it seems like.

I didn’t even realize he made into the game let alone that he had a concussion. Sorry to hear that.

Thought the same...

So maybe it came after the game?

by JazzyUte on Nov 15, 2010 1:05 PM MST up reply actions

That'd be disappointing

to think that he had a career ending concussion off of the playing field. I really am curious as to what happened.

I have noticed

that he’s been playing on special teams — covering kicks — in the last couple games. I didn’t actually see him in there on Saturday, but maybe that was when it happened?

Darn

Nice kid. A ton of talent. The next two years were his. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors. Utah football will go on, but this is rough.

Wow, what a blow both to him personally and to next years team.

I also don’t remember seeing him on the field on Saturday, and I definately dont’ remember him going down. That I should have noticed. Maybe it was off camera. I feel bad for the kid, he showed great potential and you can’t help but wonder how hard he’s taking it. I’m sure that I’d be taking it pretty hard if I were him. Shak was assumed by me and probably many others to be the favorite to start next year after both Wide and Matt Asiata graduate. Best wishes to him in the future.

wow

i didn’t know about his concussion problems, that’s too bad

by utahmanami on Nov 15, 2010 2:05 PM MST reply actions

Wow, that sucks...

I feel bad for the kid, he just couldn’t stay healthy.

This team is going to need a running back next year. I doubt Vakapuna can be the main guy.

Think Lucky Radley will stick at RB?

I know there was talk about moving him….

by JazzyUte on Nov 15, 2010 2:46 PM MST up reply actions

Honestly, I doubt it...

I think they are going to have to recruit a couple this winter.

My guess is we see some jc running back come in and try to recruit a freshman back behind him.

Very unfortunate

for Shakerin and the team. Best wishes to him and his family.

Harvey Langhi?

Does this increase our odds at landing Harvey Langhi? If I was Langhi, I would think to myself: I have a chance to be a four year starter for a pac-12 school. That would be hard to pass up. Also, I think TAuni Vakapuna can be a nice #2 guy ala Adam Tate, Juan Johnson, Omar Bacon etc.

I wonder how good Lucky Radley can be.

One more thing: D-News is reporting that JJ Williams will be out for the rest of the year. Thats too bad. I wonder if he can get a medical hardship year.

Shak

The dumbest thing is that 4 of his concussions came from the kickoff return team! He only got one concussion while playing running back! Why would you waste a kids talent on a position where most of the injuries in football come from!!

by raidersfan24 on Nov 15, 2010 5:31 PM MST reply actions

Frankly, it was only a matter of time...

If he’s getting concussions that easily, he wouldn’t have lasted at all.

by JazzyUte on Nov 15, 2010 5:39 PM MST up reply actions

You have a great point

There is evidence that some people are just more prone. And sometimes, it’s just random.

Christian Cox is on the coverage team.

He’s a better and more important player to this team than Shakerin.

He doesnt even have a concussion now

I personally know shak, and he doesn’t have a concussion right now he is perfectly fine, when i hang out with him i can tell when he has a concussion or not and he doesn’t have one right now.. they gave him a test right after the game and my friend that use to play for the U says the tests are incredibly hard to pass even without playing a football game right before.

Right

And where did you get your fucking medical degree? Wait wait….I know….you don’t have shit.

Let's not be too harsh...

But we’d be fooling ourselves if we said this wasn’t a problem. It’s been a problem for a while now. It was a problem that kept him out of the first few games.

He’s prone to concussions. But this decision isn’t just the coaches alone, IMO. Shak signed off on it, I bet.

But it does put things in perspective… health is more important than football. Trust me I know.

Shak

Yes im not a doctor but i know shak and see him almost everyday and i know things you guys don’t, like he has always had problems with migraines which is a problem that run’s in his family.. This is what they are basing his concussion off of. Not that he got hit and stumbled off the field.. Look at percy harvin who has had a history of migraines which they thought were concussions at first.. I think the thing that upsets me the most is that they didn’t ask shak to sign off on it they just told him that he is never going to play again if he medically passes all the tests.. Shak is going to a couple of neurologists to see what they say and then decide about what he wants to do. Im not trying to fight with anyone im just stating the facts that no one knows.

by raidersfan24 on Nov 16, 2010 9:53 AM MST reply actions

I hope you are right

Shakerin would be great to get back. this news makes me really sad, because he is both a good player, and he’s way to young to be declared medically ineligible, but you don’t want him to die of a stroke at age 35 either. If he has had 4 concussions before graduating from college, there is serious concern there.

I hope that he can get cleared – but if he is prone to concussions, then it’s not worth risking your life every time you get tackled.

Sorry for the BYU news, but it's related

I just got a tweet that TDS has a safety (Steven Thomas) that is no longer allowed to play football due to head injuries.

Hate to reply to myself...

…but it seems like TDS always tries to do what the U does. First they leave the MWC, now this. Now if only they’ll lose their next two games…
