Not much to say about this game that hasn't already been said. It's a pretty easy grade, I believe.

I gave them a D.

(At least the defense made a showing).

Not the D's fault really

They were not good the second half, but in reality, the 1st touchdown was 100% the product of the special teams and the offense sucking. The second touchdown was a result of a blatant block in the back by N.D. that enabled the 40 some-odd yard run to set up the touchdown. Even the ND announcers noted that one.

The defense did not allow a legitimate touchdown the 1st half. The score should have been 3-7 at the half, assuming you can’t blame away the blocked punt.

Either way, we probably still would have lost, but the D was worn down, and then nobody seemed to care in the 2nd half at all. I don’t think we broke a single tackle in the second half. Not one. I give the D an A+ in the first half, but probably a C or so in the second half (Probably a B overall) — F to everyone else.

Effort

The Defense was stout to open the game, but even the D fell apart once the Offense kept them on the field.

Defense: C (Siliga and Kruger need to lead by word and deed. Sly was the man last year that came down like a hurricane if you weren’t giving your all to the man next to you. Sealver is soft-spoken, but intimidates the hell out of everyone that stands in his shadow).

Offense: F (Matt Asiata was the only worker. Everyone else was lackluster. I’ve seen fewer missed blocks when my 5-year old plays Tetris. Cullen needs his ass sat down and then kicked. Bergstrom, too. EW3 needs to learn how to block like Shawn and Matt. Wynn needs to leave his purse in the locker room and show some toughness).

Special Teams: D (A’asa, thanks for nothing. How different might that game have been had you done your job).
Coaching:

That said, I’m moving on to SDSU with a firm belief that the Utes start their winning ways this Saturday. I’m a Utah man to the end, but these players need to be called out when they suck. And they sucked. If they are men, they pick themselves up and charge headlong into the next battle, eager to prove to themselves and their fans that they aren’t done yet.

We need an Aztec scalp and a Cougar hide to finish out the year.

Go Utes!

what did special teams do to deserve a D?

blocked punt, Shaky’s fumble, the opening kickoff that got returned to midfield, and poor punting all day.

Beyond the blocked punt and the fumble...

Shaky performed well and they did account for our only points.

This performance

was similar to what VT did after the Boise game this year, essentially allowing Boise to beat them twice. The team let TCU beat them twice, once badly on the field, and then again the following week because their spirit was broken. Look for Whittingham to bring them out of this, and get the team back on the right direction. A ten win Utah is a respectable program, and one to fear if you end up playing them in a bowl game. The PAC-12 wants you to come in competitive and on a hot run.

Let's hope this is true.

VT has been pretty awesome since the James Madison loss.
