Ute fan confidence takes a hit
Ouch! It's only been a few weeks since it was pushing 90 and now the fan confidence score has plummeted all the way down to 37.
What do the Utes need to do to regain your confidence?
For me, it's simple - win out. They win out and I'll be content. Anything less and it'll easily be one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory. Especially if Utah fails to beat BYU and they can't keep their bowl winning streak alive.
Is it possible for Utah to salvage this season in your eyes?

11-2...
…is a very respectable season given the competition.
A win against the TDS hides a multitude of sins.
It's totally possible to salvage the season
The plummet in fan confidence is because of the way Utah lost. It would be one thing if Utah lost to TCU and Notre Dame by 10-14 points each. But losing back-to-back games by 3+ touchdowns shows some serious issues. If Utah doesn’t pull out of the tailspin, it’s entirely possible that Utah losses the rest of their games.
However, winning their last three games would take the bad taste out of my mouth. Getting a 10 win season (going 2-1) would be a mediocre season. Anything short of 10 wins, would be disaster, at this point.
I agree on all parts.
I don’t think I’d be too content with a 10-3 season, even if it included a win over BYU.
Anything less, as you said, would be an epic failure.
Agreed
I was confident Utah would at least hang with TCU, but I was left utterly disappointed. I was confident Utah would beat Notre Dame, but was left wondering how a team that was undefeated and averaging over 40 points a little over a week ago could be so awful.
At this point I would be surprised it Utah won out. Ecstatic, but surprised.

This alone says that there's a lot of confidence in the program

If an 8-10 win season is unacceptable these days, you’re feeling pretty darn good about the Utes overall.
Then again, I’m saying that about the Utes even as I’m panicking about the Beavs in a similar (but not quite as winning) situation. It’s always so easy to see other people’s issues, isn’t it? ;-)
It's simple for me...
beat BYU and win the bowl game and it’s still a 10 win season and a good year.

Look at how much expectations have shifted through the season
At the beginning of the year I think the majority of Ute fans would have been pleased as punch to have a 9 to 10 win season. And now such a thing would be a disappointment? I guess it shows you what an emotional roller coaster for fans the last three to four weeks have been.
I’d like to beat SDSU, but if we don’t…not a big deal. I’d REALLY like to win the bowl game, but if we don’t…not a big deal (unless we somehow lose to Miami (OH)).
But lose to the TDS? Week-long vodka coma and slamming my head into a concrete wall like DeNiro at the end of Raging Bull.
Like you said
win out.
SDSU, BYU, bowl game…
I wouldn’t put my confidence mark around 37, of course. I’m not that down on the team (right now).
But yeah… win out.
I know 8-10 wins is a good season, but we came in expecting more (or at least I did)… I’d rather not settle for 8 wins.

Beat the TDS.....and win the bowl game.
"Well ain't this place a geographical oddity! Two weeks from everywhere!"
Gotta beat SDSU too.
Hard to stomach a 10-3 season with two consecutive losses to teams we should beat.
Agreed.
Also because it’s going to be hard to reverse field going into the TDS game if we’ve lost three in a row. I think we lose tomorrow (and BOY does it pain me to even think this way) I think we lose the last game too. I put my confidence level this week at 60%. Lose tomorrow and I may just be with this week’s average. Win and they have a chance to have me back (confidence wise) up in the 80’s. Win big against the Aztecs and I might just go back into the 90’s.
I may not be cheap, but I’m easy!

My confidence would begin to return if they'd simply score a damn touchdown this week
Usually, I’d consider SDSU a true Slump Buster, but I admit I’m quite nervous going into the weekend. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from these guys…

AMEN! in spades
I don’t think I can handle another week like the last two. Going into the game feeling confident and certain of a win only to see it vanish after the first quarter.
We HAVE to jump out of the gate in the first quarter and THUMP the Aztecs. I know that this is asking a leopard to change its spots because we haven’t done it once this season, but if we get behind in the first quarter by more than a TD I fear that our boys’ gumption will git up and go – just like it seems happened the past two weeks.
"It's a damn poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word" - Andrew Jackson
I'm not even nervous for this game...
I don’t know why. Either I’m fooling myself into thinking the Aztecs are still the Aztecs or I don’t think we have a prayer.
When you put it like that, I guess there might not be anything to worry about
Either we are who we thought we were (after the first 4-5 games of the season), or we are just a bunch of pussies, for lack of better term, as evidenced by the past two weeks of ineptitude.
But this is the litmus test for the season; lose tomorrow and it will be obvious to all that this group has no balls, and my confidence would be shot should there be an L tomorrow.
Bottom line: it doesn’t matter how much confidence I or we have, I’m hoping our boys have the confidence in themselves. And you’re right, Jazzy—it’s the motherlovin’ Aztecs for chrissakes!

Yeah, suspense is over
Just another utah year, nothing extraordinary, few scares, couple collapses, and we’ll win some that surprise everyone.

C'mon, Utes!
Why the drop on confidence!?!? You’ve got a GREAT team. Besides…. Could be worse.
Okay, I’m not actually a FULL Ute fan. I’m (cringe to say this) from the Team Down South. Before you hang me, I’m not one of THOSE Blue fans. I’m no hater. Utah’s a good school with good people. I cheer for the Utes (when they’re not playing the Y) because you’re a dang solid team, and I’m sick of NCAA underrating our teams. I was proud when U flattened Alabama, and showed what they were really made of. Shut Saban’s mouth pretty good.
Okay, so the last couple of games were not as amazing, but look on the bright side: YOU’RE NOT IN MY SHOES THIS YEAR. I’ll admit, the Cougars have been really underwhelming. Usually, (like it or not,) the rivalry is pretty close, perhaps Utes have a slight advantage. This year? Even with our recent second wind… Well… At least we get to score a final win by kicking New Mexico around before you flatten us. I think we’re really just gunning for 6-6.
And Jealous cougar fool is a dang good song, no True Blue response really matches up. (Although to be fair, most cougs have never heard of it.) Where can I buy it?
I’m really sad that we’re not going to be in the same conference anymore. Yes, we’ll still play, but not the final, built-up, culminating game. The rivalry will lose power. Congrats on Pac-12. You’ve earned it.
Most Cougs won’t admit it, but we’ll miss you. We’ve got some decent teams lined up for 2012, Notre Dame (lackluster lately,) Oregon state… Some good teams, Boise State, and of course, you guys. but the reality is… without you in a conference with us, football won’t be the same.
As a fellow MWC alum, I ask you to slay them all for the Mountain West. Good luck, Utes.
Bro...while I appreciate that SOME of the TDS fans are not total homers, I still wish you would stay off our boards....no offense but too many of you just plain suck.
"Well ain't this place a geographical oddity! Two weeks from everywhere!"
Sorry.
Sorry, I really didn’t mean to intrude. One last comment, then I’ll go to back to being a reader, not a commenter.
Maybe there is one bright note to this rivalry diminishing, and that is that we might return to being a more “rivalry,” and less “feud.” I think both schools have let it excalate too far. The fun part of this rivalry is almost completely gone, with passions running so high. Good-natured taunts from the fans of the winning team have become harsh jabs; and fans take turns gloating.
Most Utes I meet like me just fine… Until they discover that I’m a Coug. Don’t get me wrong, BYU is usually more guilty of this than Utah. (“Oh, you’re a Ute, huh?” Insert typical Cougar “Holier than thou” glare here) I have no illusions there. In general, I think that both fan bases are fairly classy until they play each other, then the animal emerges. Sportsmanship goes out the window, and as you put it, Texas Ute, “too many of you just plain suck.” I’ll admit it, when it comes to anything involving the average Coug’s outlook on Utah, you are right. Take Max Hall’s classless comments from last year. No excuses. I mean, I saw this: http://www.blocku.com/2009/11/22/1169762/i-really-hate-byu
which I thought was too harsh, and I was like, “Wow, that’s some heavy judging from a school that claims that WE are judgmental!” (which is being judgmental myself, I know. Funny how that works…) BUT!!! Then Max Hall had to open his gaping mouth and say, THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvLdPk-H94Y
on friggin’ TV no less, not just in the privacy of a BYU blog, and I think that pretty well validates some anti-BYU sentiment. The bad blood has been getting worse, not better, and I’m getting really sick of it. Utah hasn’t been innocent in the slander war, but I have to admit that Cougs have often deserved it.
I know that this is the case with BYU when it comes to many interactions with Utes. All I can say is that I’m sorry for the behavior of my classmates and fellow blue fans; and I’m doing what I can to change that mindset.
Sad as it is, maybe this change is for the best? Maybe it will help us get along?
Either way, one thing seems pretty sure to me. This Saturday Utah will get to have the last laugh in the MWC Utah-BYU rivalry as they kick the tattered 2010 Cougs to the curb. The History books of the Holy War will close on a Red win. I’ve already got my kleenexes ready to weep for my fallen Cougs. Good luck to you Utes. Here’s to burying the hatchet and moving on.
Thanks and good luck

Get Used To It
This is what life is like in the PAC-10, soon to be PAC-12. Every team is good, and no matter how good you are, you are likely to get beat somewhere along the way. That is what is so great about it. The years in which your team puts it together and wins the conference are really specially precisely because it is so hard to get done. Heck Arizona has been in the league since the mid-70’s and still has not won it, and they have had some great teams along the way. Before UW won our national championship, we had several top 5 finishes because we had that one unexplainable conference loss. So when we finally won the national title, it was an unbelievable feeling that even 19 years later brings me joy.
Was that NC stolen from Auburn?
I mean, I don’t know how much it counts, or how sweet it could really taste, if it wasn’t snatched outta their mouths.
;-)
Seriously, I agree and I don’t expect us ot win it all first year, and I don’t care: what I care about is the level of play is elevated and all our teams will have to be more competitive. I really felt if we wanted to be in th BCS bowls more often we should stay outta the PAC-10, and said so often. Getting in from the outside of the system did taste extremely sweet. Problem with Utah fans is a couple years created an expectation that they would just be better always. This team does not have the defensive talent or O line talent the 2008 team did (or experience overall, e.g. at qurterback), but with same coach etc., everyone just expected it to be as good or better.
The more knowledgeable and committed fans at PAC-12 schools also is a great thing for us to experience. Cheers mate, looking forward to it!

AQ Advantage
Credibility is the biggest thing Utah is going to gain by going to the PAC-12. Even during the years that you all went to BCS bowl games, for most people around the country there was always that “ya but” attitude towards Utah. You see the same thing this year with both Boise State and TCU. Even if one of those teams were to some how get to the national championship game and win it, a large portion of the populace would still have that “ya but” attitude and not really give either one of those schools much credit. In the PAC-12, Utah and all of us know that if you truly are able to compete and win at the highest level than you will have the opportunity to compete for and win the sports highest honors and gain the respect of the national audience. Oregon, as much as I dislike those bastards, is the perfect example of that. Beside if you think of yourselves as the best and want to truly be the best than you have to compete with the best week end and week out and not take the easy path, which is the perception, and frankly the reality, of most AQ fans of good non-AQ schools. The simple fact is that is is much harder to go undefeated in a BCS conference than in a non-BCS conference, and that is why non-BCS schools going undefeated does not get nearly the respect of undefeated BCS schools. Soon, you all will be one of the haves and not be one of the have nots, and you all will no longer have to worry about it. At the beginning of the year you will be able to dream big and not have that “non-AQ” status hanging over your head.
+1
or maybe even +2. I can’t wait for next season…but let’s start it with a 3-game win streak!
6 game...
4 games before we finish our OOC and then 2 home games.
