Utah has a pulse! Utes outlast Aztecs in offensive extravaganza

It was quite a wild ride for the Utes tonight. They started out the game looking eerily similar to the team that had dropped the last two and ended it playing like the team we fell in love with during the first eight weeks of the season.

Not a pretty win by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll take it. Now hopefully they can ride this new spark to a win over BYU Saturday.

The Holy War officially starts now.

BYU can suck it!

Ah…Ten minutes into Rivalry week and the insults are rolling off my tongue. November won’t be the same after this year!

by bbmagic on Nov 20, 2010 11:36 PM MST reply actions

I'm very happy we got the win...

but let’s be honest. We got lucky.

The hail mary. The blocked punt on a dropped snap. No personal foul on Shelby on that pick to secure the win. And I think Lindley just completed another pass for 30 yards just now. What did he have, 550 yards passing? Just embarrassing.

Our defense looks bad. The defensive line may be 11 or 12 deep, but they can’t get any pressure on the QB. So what do we have to do? Blitz backers and corners. And even then we still can’t get pressure most of the time. Our backers are slow. And our corners are undersized. Watching Lindley pick apart our defense was just demoralizing.

Still, I though we’d lose by 3 TD’s. I’m glad I was wrong. NIce to see the offense still has a pulse. Wynn looked better, but honestly, after that first pass that he threw into the ground how many of you said “oh shit, here we go again”? Hopefully today gives him the confidence to go out there and just play, and stop playing timid and scared.

Now onto BYU. At least we know they don’t have the team speed to beat our defense like SDSU did. We can play that soft man-zone against BYU and we should be fine. We can’t lose to that independent mid-major down south. Go Utes.

I think the team got a big boost of confidence from this game. They met adversity and conquered it. They’ll be fired up for TDS next week.

by bbmagic on Nov 20, 2010 11:43 PM MST up reply actions

Lucky?

Yes, but so was SDSU to get that 90 yard score so that basically equals out the hail mary at the end of the half. You must realize Lindley is one of the best QB’s in the country and has the best set of WR’s in the MWC and perhaps top 10 in the country. Yeah, 530+ yards which is a lot for even him, but he is a stud.

And the 90 yard SDSU TD wasn't luck?

That luck went both ways in this game

Besides the important thing to come out of this game, isn’t that Utah struggled and survived, it’s that Utah shook off that bad mojo that’s been hanging on them like a bad stink for 3 weeks.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 21, 2010 12:08 AM MST up reply actions

If you don't think...

we got lucky winning that game then I don’t know what to tell you. I guess you watched a different game than I did.

There were a lot of positives to come out of this game though. When down 27-10 this team could have done what it has done for the last 3 weeks and just quit. They didn’t. They finally showed some fight, stopped feeling sorry for themselves, and stayed in the game – at least on offense. The 90 yard pass from SDSU was obviously luck as well. But I don’t know if the Utes mentally hang in this game without that hail mary before the half. That was some monumental luck.

I’m just trying to keep a level head and be realistic about this team right now. I bought into the hype a little too much before the AF and TCU games, so I’m being a little more conservative now, a word that I really hate to use to describe myself by the way.

by slc ranger on Nov 21, 2010 12:27 AM MST up reply actions

nope

Disagree with everything you said. Basically, you’re trying to convince me that Utah got lucky the entire first eight weeks of the season… showed us their true colors in two blowouts… and then got lucky again vs SDSU. Sorry, ain’t gonna buy that.

I’m not saying we can’t improve. Of course we can. Of course there are areas we need improvement, but Utah is a good team. Ridiculous to suggest Utah’s win over SDSU was 100 percent luck, 0 percent talent. It’s absurd actually.

Wynn had career highs. Brooks and Dunn played well. Shakey was a spark. Some on the defense played well, too. We played well because Utah was able to capitalize on SDSU’s mistakes. Good teams do that, bad teams don’t.

by TomahawkRed on Nov 22, 2010 1:15 AM MST up reply actions

Utah didn't get lucky the first 8 weeks...

they were able to beat Pitt at home and then played a lot of crappy teams. It doesn’t take luck to beat UNLV, New Mexico, CSU, Wyo, and Co. Do I think the Utes are a good team this year? Yes. Do I think they are a very good or great team? No. I never said the team that played against TCU or Notre Dame is the real Utes or that was their ‘true colors’. I never said the Utes talent had nothing to do with any game either. I never said the win was 100% luck. You really should learn how to read.

There were a couple plays that we were very fortunate on and we got the benefit of the doubt on a couple other calls that could have easily of changed the game. To ignore that is foolish.

In short, stop being a mindless cheerleader who can’t look at his own team realistically. You’re acting like this is a top 10 team when we clearly found out alreay that it’s not.

Angels in the Ute Outfield

I said in another post that I don’t believe God decides Football games. However, I think He may send angels to the outfield, or in this case the end zone to give some extra help to the confidence of the players.

I think those confidence angels were there tonight helping our guys make good plays and helping them fight back from their two week absence. The Hail Mary prayer was answered in the first half at the end. Guts showed up in the defense, and Jordan Wynn showed up not crouched in the fetal position. And finally Blecham sealed the deal at the end of the game with that interception.

Even if SDSU would have won, I would have been happy to have my team back. But I will take the WWWWWWWWWWWWWW and thank heaven above that the football angels were in our outfield or red zone if you want to be technical!

by scotty256 on Nov 21, 2010 2:09 AM MST up reply actions

I'm not misusing it...

..but yes Karma is the resulting of doing, what you do is how you behave, so doing is behavior. As a fan some times that means behaving like that “lucky tip” didn’t feel like a punch to the gut… like it was nothing more than mosquito bite… accept it and move on… because that’s what you need your team to do to win. That’s what our Utes did last night.

Let’s be honest.. the college age is where you learn, “You don’t know everything” like you thought you did as a teenager. It’s about becoming an adult and learning by example. As Alumni and as fans, we owe it to these kids to show them what it is to have heart.. how to swallow the pain and perform in spite of it.

The mob mentality is a human reality. When emotion is that intense, that visceral, it permeates those around you. It’s why we behave professionally in the work place and try to make rules to keep emotion out of it.

Honestly, I left the game thread a couple times last night due to the negativity and returned once I had pumped myself up again as a fan. It’s hard enough to do when your team is down… the last thing you need is those around you dragging you down.

Now think of that from a player perspective. They are feeling these emotions a hundred fold and lack the life experience of most us Alumni. That’s why we need to cheer our team always in spite of their performance. It’s not our place to tell them they screwed up. We are there to teach them how to deal with adversity.

What the hell are you talking about, “not a pretty win”? I thought we looked DAMN good out there tonight, offensively. Our D lagged at times, but this was a great game. Pitt was an ugly game. Tonight, I liked a LOT of what I saw.

Confident for BYU. I will be at the game, so I’ll harrass as many BYU fans as possible. I’m expecting Utah to win by more than 3, but less than 10. I actually think it will go down to the final 2:00. The final Holy War will be yet another epic game.

PS… I glanced over the remarks you all made while watching the game. I must say, it saddens me very much (and irks me) that so many of you put out SO MUCH negativity about the Utes. I do not like hearing U fans say things like “We suck!” or “Our team is a joke” or “Don’t worry, we’ll blow it.” I do not like this AT ALL! The negativity makes it seem like Utah is a bad-to-mediocre team on the same level with UNLV and Wyoming… not a 2-time BCS winning team headed to the Pac-12.

I realize it’s frustrating at times, but try burying the negative remarks. That’s not how us Ute fans roll. Sometimes we struggle, but always support our Utes!!!

Hey hate to break it to you, but we did suck for most of the 1st half.....Once we were down 20-3 in the first quarter it sure looked like we were headed for the same old sh7t as the last 2 weeks.

I support the team but I am not a HOMER…… hell I spend tons of $ on gear, donate to the CC and am a member of the alumni association. I never leave games early. But I am not going to say we are playing well when we are not.

That being said, I totally respect fans like you and RavenousUte who do a better job at masking their frustrations…hope you can do the same for those of us who love the UTEs so much it hurts to see them play so far below their potential (as they did until the last 2 quarters yesterday).

Again...

That’s just not true. Our offense played well in the first half. We were able to move the ball and Wynn made some good decisions. He came to play right out of the gate, and I immediately noticed improvement. Not once did I get a chance to think about bringing Cain in the game.

We took over in the second half, but that doesn’t mean we stunk in the first two quarters. We didn’t.

Agreed...A lot of "Glass Half Empty" Fans

Utah looked good when it mattered. The defensive secondary got exposed for a lot of the first half, but the offense got up and got going, and then the defense had some huge stops in the second half.

Not Lucky

To say Utah was lucky to win is unfair to the effort and balls that this team showed last night.
What i saw was a team that was building confidence throughout the game.
First Wynn started hitting receivers. (He was struggling even dumping the ball to his check downs against TCU and ND). Once he started to develop confidence the rest of the team started to believe. The receivers all of a sudden started running better routes, the line was blocking better, the backs were running harder. By the second half we saw both Wide and Asiata break off big runs (which hasn’t happened in about a month). The defense was the last piece of the pie to develop that confidence. In the first half SDSU receivers were open by five yards on every catch. By the second half the Utes tightened up and even though their receivers made some big catches in the second half they had to work for the majority of them.
Overall I saw a Utah team take the game over and make plays when it counted. I think that this was by far the biggest win of the year. I can’t wait until next week!!

I agree

That was fabulous play under pressure, and not a moment to late. When players take a first half like that (after two very bad weeks) and come out with the attitude that they can win, they deserve a boatload of credit.

Good job, Utes.

I think people are forgetting

how good of a team SDSU is. Yes, our defense struggled against SDSU, but so did TCU. They actually put up more points against TCU than they put up against us. When you’re playing a team of that caliber sometimes you’re going to get beat deep. It happened to us, and it has happened to other good teams.

I’m just excited that this team had the fight to come back from a 17 point deficit. To me, that shows a lot of heart that we’ve been lacking these past few weeks. I said all week that we could come back from the two losses. I even got criticized for it! but i’m confident that the team we watched for the first 8 games of the season is back.

Perseverance

If there is one word I would use to describe last night, perseverance would be it. It took a lot of guts to dig deep after being down 20-3 in the second quarter after 2 horrible losses from the previous 2 weeks and find a way to come back and win. They won so much more than just a football game last night. They won back the hearts and support from the fans who were wavering in their confidence of the team. Seeing the Utes fight back the way they did last night and to see Jordan Wynn throw for a career high makes me so excited for this weekends showdown with BYU. I am so glad that I have the confidence to back up all of the trash talking I will be doing this week. I know that the Utes are going to come into this game on Saturday and give the TDS a beating like never before. GO UTES!!!!

D-Line

I agree with SLC Ranger, the D-line is not up to Utah standards. We supposedly have these great 12 players, but none of them can get any pressure without a blitz (except Shelby at times) and they all got completely owned by TCU’s line. I don’t think it’s the talent, I think it’s that the coaches aren’t getting them to reach their potential.

For a while there it was looking all to familiar

Amazing how sports can alter emotions so fast. Things looked much to familiar when we got down 20 – 3, but the Utes finally did what we all hoped they would do, keep their heads up and keep fighting. Plenty have commented about the play of our defense, but it sure was frustrating seeing our usually stalwart defense giving huge cushions to the SDSU receivers play after play, and the lack of pressure on the QB for the 3rd week in a row. But what impressed me was our offense. There were so many things going wrong the last two weeks, and it was good to see more than the usual 5 plays we have resorted to running. I was also happy that we could establish a strong run game against Rocky Long’s defense. I just wish our D could have gotten the SDSU offense off the field faster, because they weren’t much better at stopping our offense

A Ute, an Aggie and a Cougar were hiking together when they came across an old coke bottle. When they picked it up a genie popped out in a cloud of smoke.
“For freeing me I shall grant each of you one wish.”

The Aggie thought for a moment, then said, “Well, agriculture is important to our state school, so my wish is that Cache valley always have good crops each season.”
“It is done.” said the Genie.

The Cougar thought for a moment and said, “Well, we in Happy Valley like to be in the world but not of the world, so my wish is that there be an invisible wall around Utah Valley.”
“It is done.” said the Genie.

“Fill the valley with water.” Said the Ute.

Operation ADHD Cosmo

First mix a concoction of Red Bull, Coca Cola, Mountain Dew, Rock Star along with the Gatorade the Kitty drinks each game. Next have the double agent Ute infiltrate the TDS bench. Get Cosmo’s supply and switch the non caffeine for the ultra hyper mixture.

Then once Cosmo has his ultra hyper mixture administered send over swoop to do some “friendly” taunting. About this time the rocket fuel should kick in causing Cosmo’s ADHD to kick into overdrive. He will chase Swoop with a large metalic object and try to tackle him, but due to ADHD complications he will lose focus and smack a ref over the head. He will be ejected. This will infuriate the zoobs who will start yelling slurs such as “gosh darn Utes” and “provocation, vanquish the foe.” Causing further mayhem will be the flag the team receives from berzerk fans. Cosmo of course will run back out on the field from the locker room naked with only the mascot head on in his birthday suit.

He is arrested along with several zoobies for trying to interfere with security. Then in the patty wagon he self combusts. What a finale! Then the Utes are motivated and win 69-8.

Go Utes!
