Utah exposes Boise State.....and themselves

I did not expect Utah to defeat Boise State.  And if I didn't watch the game, I would have looked at the score and I would have said something like, "well, I hoped that wouldn't happen".  The final score didn't surprise me.  What surprised me is how that score came to be.  Early in the game, Utah has an opportunity to knock Boise State out of their shoes.  Terrance Cain would be throwing the ball well for the most part, the receivers would get open.  But they forgot how to do one thing that's covered in elementary school.  CATCH THE FOOTBALL.  Touchdowns taken away just because of that.  They could have had a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.  But it wasn't just the first quarter. This kind of thing happened the entire game. It wasn't just the receivers though, it was the offensive line committing stupid penalties.  Like the one that wiped another 7 points off the board.  Meanwhile, Terrance Cain didn't do a terrible job.  But he always seemed to have this urge to get away from the pressure.  Which is a good thing...usually.  A quarterback has to be realistic with himself though.  Sometimes you have to throw the ball away.  But Terrance Cain wouldn't do that very often and as a result he got sacked constantly.  Utah's offense would make big plays, some with the passing game, many with the running game.  Not just in the first quarter.....throughout the entire game.  But it wouldn't matter. Why?  Well, either there would be penalty or Terrance Cain would get happy feet and try to escape from something he can't escape.  And as I mentioned earlier, he didn't exactly get a lot of help from his receivers either.  There are only four downs in football.  That stuff can't happen...especially against somebody like Boise State.  So what did this game say about these two teams?  Well, Boise State is good but they are not TCU.  You can move the ball on Boise State if you're offense is good and they execute well enough.  I think Utah and Nevada showed that.  (I didn't see the Boise State-Nevada game though).  Boise State is good but I don't know if they're great.  Their offense is very good.  Their defense is decent at least.  But I think Boise State was lucky they didn't get somebody really good in a BCS bowl.  (Had they not lost to Nevada, that is).  We talk about how Utah could have made it 20-0.  Now, could you imagine what would have happened if Boise State played...lets say....TCU?  I think the Horned Frogs would have knocked Boise's backs against the walls...Boise State would have panicked.  I think they would have panicked because I don't think they know what it feels like to be in a bad situation where you're down by a few scores.  In my opinion, TCU vs Boise State would have been TCU vs Utah all over again.  Okay, now to the other part of the question.  What did the game say about Utah?  Well, I think Utah clearly has a good defense.  I know they gave up some big plays and ended up allowing many yards.  But they were going up against a potent offense and I think they were on the field for a long time.  I think Utah has potential but the offense of Utah needs to be more consistent with their execution.  Also, (and this isn't off of the Vegas Bowl, obviously), Jordan Wynn needs to improve on his long ball.  He has this tendency to slightly under throw long balls.  He's not usually horribly off but the football tends to hit the receiver's stomach...as opposed to his chest.  The reason why that's a problem is because if you throw the ball to the receiver's stomach on a straight route, it's not going to hit the receivers stomach.....it's going to hit the defensive back's chest.  One of TCU's coaches told their defensive backs to turn around every time Jordan Wynn goes deep...for that very reason.  So if Jordan works on that and the rest of the offense cuts out the inconsistent execution, I'm excited.  Otherwise, next season may be frustrating.

Thanks man,

we happen to be in the Pac-12 South. Which is not as tough as the north but still, those games against USC and Arizona may be pretty difficult.

You Ute Fans all said the same thing last year

I guess it is tough when you get shellacked 47-7, but Ute fans are the only ones that think TCU is better than Boise State, even with the loss to Nevada. For what it’s worth, I think Nevada would work over TCU this year.

TCU would be a good matchup, and they are very good, but they didn’t show me much against SDSU. The Utes probably should have finished 8-5. Pulled out squeakers against Air Force, SDSU and BYU. Credit is due for winning those, but it doesn’t mean your team is great.

Don’t act as if the Utes were the only ones that dropped passes and had turnovers. It could have been just as bad as TCU if BSU would not have been so sluggish in the first half, Shoemaker catches a wide open TD, Pettis does not fumble or the recovery is counted, and TYs catch is ruled a touchdown.

200 yards of offense, and they gave the Utes the ball with a short field the whole first half. There were no sustained drives, and you were in 3rd and longs the whole game.

It would be a good game, but just because you got creamed does not mean that TCU is better than the Broncos. Good luck in the PAC-12.

Boise....... State!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, you had dropped passes during the first quarter too,

but at least Utah’s defense did things to make it more difficult for your receiver’s to catch the ball. And the turnovers happened because Utah did a nice job giving Kellen Moore different looks. You won the game, and nobody can take that away from you. But you were also lucky. Our receivers are athletic and don’t normally just drop those. And I think Utah’s defense could have kept the Broncos score lower than it was had they not stayed on the field for the entire game. Yeah, maybe Boise State would have bounced back and won. But it would have been difficult being down by a few scores.

He didn't win anything.

The team he aligns himself with at the moment won. All he did was jump on a bandwagon. From a post he left elsewhere it’s obvious that he/she is normally a BYU fan, but they were the shits this year so he had to fall back on his number 2.

On the wrong track Smoke

Not a BYU fan unless they are playing the Utes. Bronco season ticket holder for lots of years now. Less profanity in this comment from you, so at least we are making progress.

You do know that Utah's offense was held to 200 TOTAL yds and 3 points.

Cain was sacked 4 times and hurried 8 times.

Christopher the WR had 0 catches for 0 yards.

Shaky couldnt catch nor hold onto the ball.

Asiata had one good run.

This Boise State team was far to experienced to let a sloppy 1st Q stop them.

The score could have been 40 or so to 3 IF Shoemaker makes the TD catch in the 4th and IF the refs make the right call on the AP fumble into endzone play recovered by Hiwat.

Would TCU have panicked with the score like that?
But I guess the Fiesta Bowl was last year and we only returned 20 of 21 starters for this year for those things to factor into another game vs TCU this year…

3 points and one bad half….. TCU is better……for now….
We shall see after the Rose Bowl.
Good luck in the PAC 12 and beat Oregon please.

I once meet Coach Pete and shook his hand. I knew at that very moment, I had touched God.
