Texas A&M likely to SEC; Utah now favorite for Pac Sixteen

This is a very fluid situation, so expect another change within the next 24 hours. However, it appears Texas A&M is very likely to leave for the SEC. The regents are set to vote on the move as soon as possible and there has been constant speculation putting Mike Slive, the commissioner of the SEC, in College Station, Texas today.

Would he be there to personally hand-deliver an invite to the Aggie regents?

On the other side, the more important side of this story, reports indicate Utah will get A&M's spot if they opt for the SEC and not Kansas. It appears the current Pacific Ten schools would prefer the Utes over the Jayhawks.

Expect official announcements, either way (whether this happens or not), Monday.

Not so sure

I fear that Kansas might be hurt by the opinion that they must bring Kansas State along, which Rock Chalk Talk readers inform me is more of an ideal than a law.

I don't think that'll be a big issue...

What I’m hearing is that it’s very likely the P-10 schools want Utah. They want Utah because of the Utah market and the fact it’s the fastest growing market in the west (well was last year and one of the fastest this year). Salt Lake is a future boom city similarly to Phoenix in the 70s. Kansas not so much.

Kansas, though, is getting support from the Big 12 teams.

So basically, it comes down to who holds more power.

I’m guessing in that regard, the P-10 will win out. They want Utah because it fits the geographical center of the conference. They have a great football team and a historically strong basketball team. But more importantly, they’re in a very viable television market.

you’re right, as U. of Washington fan, the fast majority of UW and Pac-10 fan want Utah for the reason you state. Most of us would prefer you over all those Texas A/M or OKC. I really hope Texas A/M goes to the SEC and you come our way.

Well, Since the Big 12 schools don't officially join until 2012

I guess the current PAC 10 hold all the power :)

On the bright side

I am not sure Texas A&M will be the only Big 12 team the SEC goes after. If Texas and/or Oklahoma go Utah will be in the PAC 16.

Hope you join us

Hey Utah, born and raised in Seattle. As a life long University of Washington and Pac 10 (1) fan, I’m hoping very hard that you join our conference. Most UW fans I know want you over Kansas and Texas A/M. One, you fit geographically, you’re out west, and have mountains, just like my state. Utah has high academics, like U. of Washington and most Pac 10 (1) schools. Utah has the best non-BCS football program in the country and has a tradition of good basketball. Salt Lake City is the last and largest urban center not already in the Pac 10 (1). Finally, you’re not BYU. Screw them, as folks in Seattle can’t stand the BYU. They should never of given them the national title over us in 1984.

Thanks Seattle Guy.

I’d like to join you, too. Utah belongs amongst the major universities that reside within your current conference. I was born in Salt Lake City and raised in the ‘burbs. We at Utah can’t stand BYU either. We think that they are a bunch of close-minded, arrogant hypocrites. They have the ultimate “Holier than thou” attitude. They act like if you don’t go to BYU somehow you are not a good member of the LDS (Mormon) faith. These bastards actually believe that they win on the field because they are living “righteously” off the field. In most cases, the athletes at BYU (or the Team Down South, as we call them) get away with everything. Man, do I loathe those clean-shaven, caffiene free-drinking, ice cream eating freaks.
