Rumor: Utah has informed Mountain West of intentions to leave conference

This from Tom Cella of UteZone. He's a pretty reputable source and I'd take his word on everything since he's been pretty spot on since this story broke wide open back in February.

If true, and it appears the Pac-Ten is moving fast, official word should happen by tonight or tomorrow.

It's starting...

And why/

We’ll make about 10 times what we would in the MWC and get more exposure.

Good or bad, we’re taking the cash and running baby.

No more excuses Utah, put up or shut up. Hope our Baseball and track teams improve . . .

I'd have to believe...

that it’s all but a done deal. The PAC 10 knew they could fall back on Utah and CU if they struck out on the massive PAC 16 idea with UT, OU, and Co.

I’m so damn pumped up right now. Away with UNLV, San Diego St., and New Mexico. Bring on Cal, Oregon, and USC.

Here come the UTES.

Man, we gonna bruised up

But the up side?

The coaches and teams have ot find a way to get past those famous “Utah lethargy let downs against puny teams”. No more underperforming and then bowling with a 9-3 record boys. We get sloppy in this track meet and we’ll be 4-8 every year.

by Aardvark on Jun 14, 2010 7:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Maybe I'm reading into your posts too much...

but it sure seems like you’re way too pessimistic about all this.

Sure we could have a down year or two and go 4-8 or 5-7. I’m sure there will also be some seasons of mediocrity at 8-4 or 7-5. But who gives a shit. We will have done that in the PAC 12.

What’s the alternative? Continue to go 12-0, 11-1, or 10-2 in the MWC and have everyone tell us it doesn’t mean squat because of the conference we play in? You have to take the chance. This deal will make the school 10 times more money than it brings in now and increase the level of talent it can recruit. How can you not be excited about that? And in case that doesn’t do it for you, take a whiff of our schedule this year and then compare it to that of 2011 in about 9 months. That should cheer you up.

No I mean

A great Utah team can get sloppy, as we always do, and win against Air Force, UNLV, Wyoming, etc. We can’t do that against UCLA, Oregon State, Stanford.

So, if we play sloppy and lack focus, as Utah invariably does each year, we’ll lose far more games we should have won.

Saying we need to learn how to 1) cut down on stupid penalties; 2) not get cute and cocky.

by Aardvark on Jun 14, 2010 8:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

But we need to take advantage of USC’s probation and pull in better talent now.

we won’t be playing those teams with the same players and resources now.

We aren’t in the MWC anymore my friend.

I’m confident Whit can help cut down on your two issues. I agree, they have been problems, and need to be cut drastically. But they can’t be completely eliminated either.

Excited to see what we can do with BCS talent.

How many times did we lose recruits to Washington State and Oregon because we were in the little ol Mountain West? That’s about to change.

We pulled in a top-30 class without being in a BCS conference. I can see us jumping ten or fifteen spots and that’ll make a world’s difference.

by JazzyUte on Jun 14, 2010 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions

So...

does the PAC 12 go north/south or east/west for their divisions?

North – UW, WSU, OU, OSU, CU, Utah
South – UA, ASU, UCLA, USC, Cal, Stanford

or

East – UA, ASU, CU, Utah and either the Washington or Oregon schools.
West – USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, and either the Washington or Oregon schools.

I’d lean towards them doing the north/south alignment.

Gotta probably have a California team in every division...

North
Cal
Oregon
Oregon State
Stanford
Washington
Washington State

South
Arizona
Arizona State
Colorado
UCLA
USC
Utah

to have a California team in each division?

PAC 10 scheduling came up at BCS Evolution back in January.

http://www.bcsevolution.com/2010/1/27/1273162/dominoes-pac-10-edition

I thought I had posted my thoughts on a design that moved the California teams between the north and south divisions. I guess I better dust that off more.

The idea would have six teams in two round robin divisions each year, while separating the teams into three groups:

North: WSU, Washington, Oregon, OSU
South: Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Utah
California: Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA

Each team would play each team in their group every year and each team from the other groups 5 times every 8 years, with a 16 year cycle for home and away.

Each team would play in California every year and play a southern California team every year. Five times in a typical four year period.

I think it’s more likely they do an east/west division, maintaining the traditional rivalries (uo/osu, uw/wsu etc) while ensuring the nw schools at least one appearance in so. cal every season.

by Aardvark on Jun 14, 2010 8:17 PM MDT up reply actions

I saw this (pretty sure) on a Cal Bears blog

He called it the zipper model. Essentially break up all the natural rivals (none of which, really, mean all that much to us ute fans) into each division. So… Each team plays the other 5 in its division, its natural rival, and three other teams (a 9 game conference schedule I suppose). That seems to be a good idea since the NW schools are worried about losing revenue from not having at least one of SC or UCLA playing there each year.

Doesn’t seem like a bad idea to me. Play the natural rivals each year. Only maybe a couple of secondary rialries lose some luster… Oreg v. Wash, Cal v. USC… to an even lesser extent Stan v. USC…?

by UteCane on Jun 14, 2010 8:19 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah, that was one idea that a reader had...

…but I don’t see it happening – i think all the teams would scream bloody murder. Breaking up the rivalries doesn’t make any sense. Having the game against your hated rival NOT count toward your divisional record is just sick and wrong.

Personally I like the zipper.

It gives you a game in socal and nocal every other year, plus one OOC game 5/6 years is against a california school.

The problem is that it is the ACC model, and people don’t like it because you never know who is in which division. People blame the model for the ACC championship being a failure, but personally I blame the Florida teams for sucking.

Rivals are a Big Deal

The Pac 10 has long and historically rivals that the fan and alumni base simply won’t stand to have them broken up, not going to happen. With that said, it’s a given that the Washington and Oregon schools will be together. It’s also a given, due to geographic reasons, that the LA and Arizona schools will be together. The unknown is where the Bay area and new schools go. I suspect that given a choice, the Bay schools will want to go with their California brethren. That would put Utah and Colorado with the Northwest Schools and California and Stanford with the southern schools. As a U. of Washington life long fan, this works for me. Utah and Colorado have more in common with Washington and Oregon than with the others. We’re all have large mountains, are out door types, and don’t really like California. While the Bay area is California and Arizona has a lot in common with California. In a nut shell; Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Colorado are forest, water, and mountains, while California and Arizona are dry deserts.

Hey...I was just as livid as you...

Well maybe not as livid. But very disgusted at the whole ordeal. I still remember some classic Jazz-Sonics playoffs. Game seven of the West Finals in 1996 was epic. That whole series was epic. Utah was down 3-1 and were a minute away from the finals…

by JazzyUte on Jun 14, 2010 10:33 PM MDT up reply actions

It sucks. My first two sports memories are the ’79 Sonic championship and the ’79 Husky Rose Bowl win. In fact my first every sporting event in person was a Sonic western conference championship playoff game in 1979. Just think the guy who sold the team to the okie redneck was a former Sonic season ticket holder. Imagine a Jazz season ticket holder buying the team and then selling it to an out of state buyer who then moves the team with 3 years still left on the lease.

Anyways, welcome to the conference. Looks like Washington and Utah will renew the rivalry again.

True that. Reports are that the new schools will be thrown in with the LA and Arizona schools. I don’t know how the Bay area schools will feel, but the Northwest schools likely won’t like this too much.

comment from USC alumnus

Just joined your board… the conference realignment thing is great fun.
I never thought I would be posting to Texas Tech, Oklahoma or Utah boards.

USC v. Cal is the oldest football rivalry in the PAC.

Actually, one of the first football games ever played in California was Cal v. USC.

Do not look for the Calif schools to be split between different divisions.

The guys at wearesc.com have been discussing these issues alot also.

i like the guess with three 4-team sections.

However, I also think it makes more sense for the PAC to hit the 16 team “super conference” level.

If Utah moves to the PAC, it will create a recruitment niche for Utah in Cailfornia, Oregon, and Washington. Utah gets alot of exposure in those areas now but would be a major new player on the scene for prep ball. Right now, BYU is the only thing the kids see. That will change with Utes in the PAC.

Utah also picks up more TV money.

Utah also fits in the academic profile of the PAC. (I’m not making any digs at BYU with that comment)

UNLV could be a player, but Nevada doesn’t fit in the culture of the PAC. So, I doubt that UNLV is on the table.

My other guess is that Kansas, K-state, Mizzou, and Iowa State would be a reach, but could fill out the 16.

With the way UTexas played the Big 12-North schools this past week and the way UT has dominated Big12 decisions, it seems to me that the Big12 North guys would have good reason to look at the situation of a formation of 8 teams in Central/Mountain timezones but with Media reach to the West Coast.

Essentially, the West Coast PAC-8 schools would be playing at prime time for Central and Mountain Time. Then, their counterpart schools would be playing at Prime Time for PST.

For instance, UCLA goes to Kansas. With a 7 PM CST kick-off, it’s 5PM PST. The game might run to 10 PM CST. That means a 8 PM kick off for USC (prime time in LA and west coast) against K-State.

TV audience is 20 million between the two timezones and across 2/3rds of the country.

Welcome to the Pac-12

from a Bruin who can’t sleep.

Personally, I’d like to give the expansion a rest at 12 schools unless additional joiners come from a Pacific Northwest or Southwestern state. I mean no disrespect to anyone in Kansas or Texas, but I think keeping conferences regional adds to the tradition of college football.

If there is ever a time when other western research institutions like Idaho (an old Pacific Coast Conference team), Nevada or New Mexico are good matches for the Pac, I’d be happy to welcome them to the club.

For now, I’m hoping this turns out to be a good move for all involved. I just hope my Bruins get a chance to play Cal every year. There’s only one school I like to beat more than those guys.

Quick question: How much of a rivalry, if any, is there between Utah and Colorado?

by FreewayBruin03 on Jun 15, 2010 2:41 AM MDT up reply actions

Utah hasn't played Colorado since 1962

So not much of a rivalry at all.

Back in the day, long before I was born, that was the rivalry in the Rocky Mountains. Utah and Colorado were in the same conference from 1910 to 1947. But then after the 1947 season, Colorado left the Mountain States Conference for the Big 7, which became the Big 8.

Utah and Colorado continued to play most years. But because Utah was in a lesser conference, Colorado refused to play Utah anymore. In 1961, Utah handed Colorado their only regular season loss. Colorado finished #7 in both polls. They refused to agree to any more series with Utah at that point.

comment about the Bruin

(side note to Utes….see how the UCLA guys start talking when a Trojan shows up? I make one post and the Bruins start “de-cloaking”)

UCLA would think that Idaho, New Mexico, and Nevada are a good catch.

USC doesn’t. USC is after media market. USC is thinking two things:
1. Strength of schedule and
2. Academic reputation

Idaho, New Mexico and Nevada do not cut it.

The Big 12 teams do.

By bringing WAC or MWC teams into the PAC-East, you dilute the schedule strength.

That is what UT is thinking with their now dominance of the Big 10. UT will run this game like USC did on PAC for the past 7 years.

But, a big diff exists.

At least Colorado had the gonads to tell Texas to blow off.
Texas wants ALL the TV revenue.

USC shares its revenue with the PAC. Therefore, the money is DISTRIBUTED between the teams. That wasn’t good enough for TX because UT wanted their own network (talk about “Lone Star”?)

You UCLA fans need to think about the PAC as a group instead of just looking at your own Bear and thinking you’re the center of the football universe.

USC is looking at the long-term picture of the game on the West Coast.

UCLA should be siding with USC on this expansion program.

NCAA doesn’t like it.

BCS doesn’t like it.

SCREW THE NCAA and the BCS BOTH.

PAC-16 or BUST!

by bonesmccoy on Jun 15, 2010 3:10 AM MDT up reply actions

Agreed on those schools

Academically, no way they fit in the PAC-10

by Aardvark on Jun 15, 2010 7:16 AM MDT up reply actions

UNLV Academically?

Deal killer for PAC-10. You’d need a revamp of that place in terms of research and about 20 years proven track record. It’s essentially a zero research school.

by Aardvark on Jun 15, 2010 7:14 AM MDT up reply actions

I wasn't totally serious

I agree that most WAC and MWC schools don’t fit the Pac profile, I only mentioned the above schools “if there is ever a time” when their joining would make sense because I like the tradition of geographically-based conferences. I think the Utes could compete in the SEC, but it would seem weird to me to if Utah joined the SEC west even if that kind of move somehow made sense in terms of a TV deal.

Same thing with the West schools and Kansas. Kansas’ basketball program would increase the the competitiveness and exposure for the Jayhawks and the Pac schools, the geography is just too weird in my opinion, even if that opinion may be too grounded in old traditions to be wise from a business perspective.

Bones: Would Texas’ demands – and likely future demands – be a good outcome for all Pac schools? If the Longhorns joined and pulled the balance of power – and money – toward Austin, do you think there’s a risk of the old Pac-8 schools become the next Big XII north?

by FreewayBruin03 on Jun 15, 2010 12:44 PM MDT up reply actions

"Austin, do you think there’s a risk of the old Pac-8 schools become the next Big XII north?"

Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas State were really good football programs before Texas’ unfair advantages started taking it’s toll on the Big 12. It’s happened once, if not careful it will happen again.

Money, Exposure, It just makes more sense

Money isn’t the only reason Utah should jump on a possible invite.

1: Exposure (Colin Cowherd covered this one pretty well)
2. Escape of the prison that is the Mntn. channel
3. With USC taking a big hit, the Pac-10 could be up for grabs. (personally I think we would take a year or two to acclimate) but in time we could be a legit power
4. possible Rose Bowl appearance sounds SOOOOOOO good to four/five star recruits. :)

This will also be a plus for the pac 10 to reduce talent in the mwc since the mwc has been on the rise and has a better record vs the pac 10 recently. This will hurt their chances of becoming an AQ conference.

I Hear That

Props to Colorado and Nebraska for telling Texas to kiss where the sun don’t shine. Why would the 3 other schools who had the chance to jump from out underneath Texas not do it? It’s true USC has been the class of the conference for the last decade, but that is pretty rare when you look at conference history. In fact, until USC, Washington was first and only school to go to three Rose Bowls in a row, 1990-92. The conference is normally wide open, so given some time, both Colorado and Utah will compete. Basketball has normally been UCLA thing, but it has been wide open the last 10 to 15 years. My DAWGS have been to the Sweet 16 three of the last five years and look to be at the top of the conference next year.

by astanfi on Jun 14, 2010 11:12 PM MDT up reply actions

I know a great deal of P10 fans wanted the P16...

But in the long run, I think the P12 will be a better fit because you don’t want a conference dominated by Texas. Look at the Big 12 deal. It favors Texas. It’s a mess.

Then again, it would’ve made it the best football conference in the country.

by JazzyUte on Jun 14, 2010 11:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Which is why the Big 12 is still on life support.

All this deal did was give Texas more time to figure out what conference they want to go to in a couple years, after getting their own network.

Don’t blame Colorado for leaving, but don’t have to like your team either. Got any problem with me rooting for Utah over Colorado? Utah was never a KU rival.

That makes he most sense geographically, the issue for the north schools is the fear it will set up a situation akin to the Big 12(-2) where the power was centered in the south making it difficult to recruit the Texas kids to the northern division. I’m not sure what the best solution is but I think it will be group Colorado and Utah with the Arizona schools. The issue is how do you divide up California? UCLA is a cub (Bruin).

Can someone please tell me what a “Ute” is?

Ute is an American Indian tribe...

They’re located in the western United States.

Utah comes from the tribe, a name meaning people of the mountains.

Sounds good

Thanks for the explanation!

May the “mountain people” go bag some “bears”, huskies, ducks, beavers.

What about Aggies?

Oh that’s right…we don’t really care about Aggies anymore.

:/

Poor Utah State. Gotta wonder if Gary Andersen is kind of kicking himself right about now?

No Aggies in the Pac

So Utah will have to remain in state to bag some Aggies. Besides, “Aggies” didn’t fit with the animal theme.

cougars and beavers

When a Bruin meets a Trojan in the Coliseum, the Bruin is usually a sacrificial animal for the emperor of ESPN.

It now appears that Utes will be on ESPN to do the same to cougars and beavers.

I suppose if you are the cougar or beaver, you should be very afraid.

SunDevils are more of a problem.

On the other hand, I have no idea what the heck Stanford is doing with their Tree. The mascot Tree stands on the sidelines, like, well, a “tree”. He literally makes like a tree and he doesn’t “leave” either.

The last time that stupid tree showed up in Los Angeles, they stopped the longest continuous winning streak that USC had in the Coliseum for a very long time, if not ever.

A Bruin is a just a Bear, period

It’s not a bear “cub,” no matter what those Cal people say.

I mean, are there any other definitions for a Trojan other than an inhabitant of the ancient city of Troy?

Thanks to PAC-10 fans

For dropping in and welcoming us.

I'm having a great deal of fun !

Thank you for the discussion and warm welcome.

Hopefully the trolls on the USC boards don’t bite you guys when you go over there.

I still haven’t “decloaked” at a UCLA, Cal, or Stanford board.

Frankly, I’m scared to.

Those people are fricking wierd man! (heh heh)

Most of us have been looking forward to the PAC 12 for as long as you have. We were sick and tired of watching other conference title games and watching our teams get passed up for BCS spots, out-of-sight equals out-of-mind. Now we have a conference game and Utah has a shot at a national title every year

by astanfi on Jun 15, 2010 1:02 AM MDT reply actions

Well, most people east of utah

think the pac-10 is nothing without USC, so be ready to constantly try to prove otherwise. The problem is, the league is so deep in the 2nd-4th place caliber teams they all kill each other and the conference looks mediocre in the standings.

I think Utah is a terrific program, but get ready for some more unsightly loss columns than you are used to.

I have a hard time believing there will be more columns criticizing the Pac than we got criticizing the MWC.

Take 2008, for example. There were too many articles to count that more or less said, “It’s super that Utah managed to win all their games! It’s kinda cute how you beat all those other little league teams and then managed to beat a team in the Sugar Bowl who didn’t want to be there.”

Many “journalists” didn’t even bother to look at our schedule to see who we played or what their ranks were. So I think we can handle this. I’ve come to enjoy the sparring.

Hey - I'm a Ute in DC Too!

I think SP said “unsightly loss columns” as in – Utah will have more Losses and fewer Ws in the win column. He thinks we need to prepare for more Ls. Not newspaper columns – which you make a great point about.

by Something Clever on Jun 15, 2010 8:57 AM MDT up reply actions

I just meant

more losses than you are used to. I am not suggesting Utah will become a perennial sub .500 team.

by spencer peaty on Jun 15, 2010 11:21 AM MDT up reply actions

Ah.

That’s what I get for posting at 2:20 in the morning. Reading comprehension drops. Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, we will probably have a few more losses a year, on average. I think we can handle that as long as Utah remains competitive.

by Ute in DC on Jun 15, 2010 12:57 PM MDT up reply actions

BCS means respect

If Utah wins in the PAC 12, you all will automatically get respect on a national level. Having great success in the MWC just gets you “but they play in the Mountain West” phrase every time someone talks about the Utes.

by astanfi on Jun 15, 2010 1:31 PM MDT up reply actions

A Thank you from a Trojan Alum

“Pac-10 is nothing without USC”
“they all kill each other”

Yep.

And the SEC and Big12-2 never show up for their annual pasting either.

Maybe you and Colorado can get TX to step up and play a real team other than Rice, Stephen J Austin Univ and South Padre Island JC.

We're Utah

We had 30 years of unsightly loss columns, we’re waaaaay used to it.

I expect we will win some, lose some. Will we ever be a greta power? Doubtful, Football is great, we love that we’ve gotten so much better, but it’s not our priority like some Universities out there.

Hey, we have a great gymnastics squad, y’all watch yer backs there!
