Utah / byu: Big Brother / little brother?

I've got a few questions for the group: I've never completely  understood why the zoobs always conclude everything with.. "it must be a little brother thing" or make a reference to "our little brothers up north".  What does that even mean?  I find it odd that even with the success of Utah's football program this decade, I still hear that reference here and there.  When was it assumed Utah was the little brother?  Anyone know the history here?  Are the zoobs still going to think we're their little brother next year when we play in the pac-10?

They owned us

For a couple decades man, that kind of dominance brereds arrogance like that.

Hubris biting them in the ass—no one likes BYU fans or teams.

we lead the series by like 15 to 18 games right?

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 5 weeks till the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.

Yeah

But in the old days when the series was meaningless we owned it. In modern ti,mes, the only ones people care about, we’ve been competitive recently but for 20 years they owned us out right.

They say “little brother” to try and get a reaction out of us because they’re incredibly insecure about the fact that Utah is a far more prestigious university academically.

Re: I've got a few questions for the group

No more than misery loves company for our lonely pale blue zoobs down south. They are referencing history of gridiron dominance over the Utes in the state of Utah for the past two or three decades per say to include their 1980 national championship. Now the tables have turned and Utah is the growing powerhouse program in the state of Utah and around the nation. zoobs are in denial and will bring up every “belittling” remark they can think of to make Utes and its football program feel small and inferior. zoobs are the ones that are insecure about it because Utah is getting all the national attention and respect. They can’t stand it that the Utes are respected and BYU is a "was, has been, a distant memory, and forgone conclusion.’ They feel America owes them respect from their dominance in the 80s and 90s and should always be mentioned in the same conversation as the likes of USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Nebraska, and Notre Dame, to name a few. zoobs feel they should be entitled to perks and privileges over Utah regardless if they haven’t cracked the BCS in their existence. That it should just be a given because of their one national championship compared to the likes of USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Nebraska, and Notre Dame who each have more titles than I can count. The national media has constantly put BYU on a peda-stool because of its national following which to me is pure hype and can be pressure to a football who is expected from the Mormon church and its LDS affiliated fans to perform at a high level, only to be disappointed when those expectation fall short due to a loss from teams who they are suppose to beat. Unfortunately, when expectations are set very high right off the bat at the beginning of the season, its very hard for a team who is not always ranked in the top 10 yearly to play at that level. This new kind of pressure that zoobies feel nowadays is for BYU to go undefeated, play in a BCS bowl game and win one. This the new monkey on their backs that is killing them.

Yeah, we're the better teanm . . .

But 1-3 against them in last 4, giving away all three losses.

Better teams don’t cough games away that consistently. They look down on us becuase when it comes to tough time, we choked far more times than they have.

When a team chokes against you? You own them.

When Utah has crushed them a few straight we can crow, till then all this talk about our superiority is not matching our play against them. I can recall 2 or three times we whipped them badly and about 2 dozen where they beat the hell out of us (like, 55-6).

Guys on this board also tend to talk down to Boise, I mean, where does that come from? Boise freaking owns us man, whipping us 36-3 at home last time we played (during Utah’s mighty resurgent period fellas). When they were IIA they beat the hell out of us in SLC (28-7, I was there, look it up).

Look, guys, going to the PAC-10 is great, we have a fine coach and some talent: but it took an extremely focussed team and some luck to go 12-0 in 2008 (contrast to 2004 when we blew everyone out flat). Until we play a game we will not know if Whit has found enough gems to rebuild the defense and if our OC has matured enough to move the ball more consistently. Talking about us as a power just doesn’t make sense.

when boise joins next year tcu and boise will freeze them out some more.

the monkey on their backs will be a gorilla in 5 more years. lol.

Don't know where it comes from...

but I know that every time I read it (comes up in the comments of pretty much every Utah/BYU newspaper article posted) I immediately imagine two mentally slow kids arguing next to the monkey bars at recess. I also see U fans joining in on this nonsense big brother/little brother argument—please Ute fans, it’s dumb when Y fans do it, and it’s just as dumb when U fans do it.

Two things about these comments that I wanted to address:

1.) 5-5, 10-10; Lets all just face it that the rivalry COULDN’T be any more even. As much as I dislike BYU, nobody is owning anyone in the last 20 years (seems like a nice round, non-cherrypicked number).

2.) Neither team has ever been all about helping the other one out. I’ve seen several bizarre comments from BYU fans suggesting that BYU has always helped Utah out and now Utah is stabbing them in the back. Utah has always done what’s best for Utah, and BYU has always done what’s best for BYU. Up to this point it was in both schools best interest to tether themselves together—a PAC10 invite changed that.

Utah / byu - Football Series (circa 2000 - 2010)

Although the series has been even, our records show that Utah’s journey has been more more volatile. It seems byu fans have come to terms that a 11-2 season is as good as it gets down in zoob-land. I’ll admit that they are a fantastic mediocre program, never again able to reach greatness (if you call beating 6-5 Michigan great)!

Utah, on the other hand, certainly have had their ups and downs. We went 12-0 in 2004, then 7-5 in 2005. 2 years ago we ended up undefeated again than 10-3 last year. Unlike Boise (conf. affiliation is clearly a significant variable), we can’t seem to put together 2 -3 solid seasons together. The zoobs had down years in 2005 and 2006, but since have had 4 consecutive 10+ win seasons – but they’ll never be able to go to a BCS game or run the table.

Personally, I’d take the volatility with an occasional Sugar Bowl or Fiesta Bowl than back-to-back mediocrity… Go Utes!

I think we've stabilized as a program...

It took a bit for Whittingham to get us there, but I don’t anticipate seasons like 2005 or 2006. At least they’ll be even rarer.

But you’re right. BYU has been more consistent since 2006.

I think, over time, that will change. The Cougars will probably continue to be as consistent as they are now. Utah will just be more consistent and since they’ll be in the BCS, their consistency will offer better results.

Remember, a 11-2 season by the Utes in the P-10 is BCS worthy. BYU going 11-2 means Vegas Bowl.

It's just fans...

trying to degrade the other school.

Simply a superiority complex.

BYU thinking:

We are the little brother because they have a title and we don’t. they spout off not only thier title but thier conference titles and all their precious player awards. Never mind that they haven’t accomplished anything of note (except for a couple of MWC titles) in the BCS era.

i was born in NYC and if you asked who had the better college football program 75%......

of them would say utah. there one title is soo long ago that unless you are a hardcore fan you would not even know it happened. the paradigm shifted when we went to the bcs system in 1998. people have short attention spans and most only remember a few years ago. i know who won the 1998 first bcs ncg off the top of my head. how many of you can do it without looking it up? the fact is we have 2 bcs bowl wins to none for byu and now that we are in the pac-12 i say it only takes us two years to get to the rose bowl and five to win a national cg. i’m that confident.

that means asking people on the east coast about who is the better team.
