The Morning Blitz: Daily Utah links

Today marks three weeks until the Utes open their season against Pittsburgh! It's like counting down Christmas. Oh the excitement of it all. The second can't get here soon enough.

I'm sure you noticed the unusual results of a poll I put up yesterday about projecting Utah's records 6 games into the season. It seems a BYU fan decided to post it over on Cougarboard in hopes of hijacking the results. Why I do not know - but I'm not complainin'. It just drove up my traffic further (Block U averages about 1,000 hits a day and yesterday we were at about 500 more than average) and hopefully they'll continue to peek in on us over the season.

But that's not important. No one really cares about BYU trolls. We're focused on the season and as it's almost here, every aspect of training camp will now play an even larger role than what we saw during the first few days earlier this week.

The Utes had their first two-a-day yesterday and it went well. The offense continued to impress after their dismal showing back on Monday and I hope this continues into today's scrimmage. In fact, the scrimmage will prove to be important because it's the real first test to see how both the offense and defense stack up against one another. That scrimmage is closed to the public, but I suspect there will be a ton of information on it during the day.

So now we begin the final weeks of preseason. It's going to be brutal getting through the next half-month because frankly, I always find the last part of August drags when you're anticipating the football season. But it'll give us time to examine the schedule, and most importantly, Pittsburgh.

Also, I haven't mentioned the fact that Fan Fest is back after a one-year absence. If you're unfamiliar with fan fest, it was held annually until last year at Rice-Eccles Stadium generally the weekend before the season starts. The entire athletic department comes together and signs autographs, takes photos and it's pretty much just a great time to hang with fellow Utes and talk with coaches and players about the upcoming season.

This year's fan fest will be held at the stadium on Saturday the 28th and will go from 10 a.m. to roughly noon or one.

Now what you all came for (assuming it wasn't hardcore nudity - don't worry, it's SFW), the links!

Rivalry game in 2011

Game will be played.

Holmoe said he hopes the date for the 2011 rivalry game will be decided in the next two to three weeks.

Does anybody know where this game will be played? I have so many questions about how it happend.

That's not what he said.

His exact words were:

“I think that the rivalry game will be played. We are going to keep playing,” Holmoe said. “Chris and I have talked about it, I’ve talked to Coach Mendenhall, and I am sure that he’s talked to Coach Whittingham.”

Now, I think the rivalry will continue, but it may take a break in 2011 and then start up again in 2012 in Provo.

But there was more

You quoted what Holmoe said in the interview. I quoted what the reporter wrote in the article. Also, if you watch the video in the link, at the very end the anchor says what I have quoted from the article.

They make it sound like the rivalry game is on in 2011 and the date will be decided in 2-3 weeks. I heard them talking on 1280 the zone this morning too. I came in during the middle of the story so I didn’t get the full intent; however, it sounded like they were saying the rivalry is on in 2011.

Here is the link to the article again.

Is the rivalry game on in 2011 or is this just bad reporting? It sounds to me like it is decided the game will happen in 2011.

Right, but I think the reporter is adding his own gloss.

The reporter makes no decisions. The words coming from Holmoe are that they’re still working on it, not that it’s a done deal and they’re just picking a date. So . . . I think it’s still an uphill climb.

We know we only get 3 OOC games because of the stupid 9-game conference schedule (a mistake, but apparently it’s done). Right now we don’t know if we’ll have 5 home or 5 road conference games, which makes a big difference. If we have 5 home games then we have room to schedule BYU on the road. But if we have 4 home games then we need two home games OOC, which means we have to cut Boise AND Pitt (and pay the penalties to cut those games in a year when we make ZERO tv money).

Probably in Provo. The BYU staff seemed pretty adamant that the game not take place in Salt Lake City twice in a row. Also, BYU has two road, non-conference games scheduled in 2011.

My best guess is that one (or both) of Utah’s road dates in 2011will be postponed.

the article with mr whelman is good except about his position on texas am.

year in and year out a&m disappoints. this year will be no different. but he is right on about houston. the cougars could go 13-1 with three wins over aq bcs teams. that would be top 8 in my book.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 3 weeks till the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.
