Utes unranked in AP poll

Yes, people, there is a football season on the horizon. I know it's hard to believe with all this expansion talk - but it is happening! I promise. In less than two weeks really.

Today, the AP poll was released and our Utes are nowhere to be found in the top-25.

Seriously.

So we made the Coaches and the Media stiffed us in the preseason. Not entirely a shocker, I guess, but still pretty surprising because generally the Coaches and Media poll don't differ that much.

The Utes are, theoretically, ranked 28th. Behind football powers Cincinnati and Stanford.

I can't say I'm not disappointed with this because I am. But what're you going to do? Fortunately, the Utes will have a chance to maybe crawl into the rankings if they beat Pitt - who the AP has ranked 15th. But I wouldn't count on it. Because it seems we're the Rodney Dangerfield of college football. We just don't get no respect.

Things turned out okay in 2008. Utah was in the “others receiving votes” category for both the Coaches’ & AP Polls that year. So Utah is a step ahead as far as I am concerned.

As far as preseason polls go, I’m fine with them as long as voters re-evaluate their opinions each week. If Utah beats Pitt, I will be much more angry if they aren’t ranked ahead of Pitt.

Right now, I hope the coaching staff is keeping the players focused. If this motivates the players, so much the better.

I see no reason why, if we beat Pitt, we can't overtake their spot at 15th.

Not gonna happen, but I mean, it’s based on a PRESEASON poll and we would technically be 1-0.

If we start strong

The media will recognize us for it. Media, though, hate ot be proven wrong and if we go undefeated tehy’ll likely be pissing on us at the end of the year as well. They hate, hate being wrong. How many years did they include Clemson in the top 25 preseason just to wtach them fold?

the ap poll does not count for any bcs related ranks.

i don’t care. we beat pitt really good we will be top twenty.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 2 weeks till the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.

The inherent flaw of preseason rankings

Is that we won’t overtake Pitt’s spot at 15th, even if we beat them by 4 touchdowns. They will fall out, but we will move up to maybe 20th.

Funny that even with 0-0 records across the board, the AP, Coaches, etc. polls don’t want to embarrass themselves by shaking everything up week after week.

That is why even if Utah goes undefeated, BSU will still likely stay ranked above them, no matter what.

We’ll see though. Chances are, everyone will mess up at least once along the way, which will open the door for an undefeated Utah to make a case.

GO UTES!

I don't pour beer on Max Hall's family often, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

Well BSU will be ranked ahead of 'em if they go undefeated.

However, if they lose to V-Tech and Utah goes undefeated, we’ll finish five-ten spots ahead of an 11-1 Broncos team.

There's only so much "media darling" available

and the AP used it all up this year on Boise, and, to a lesser extent, TCU. At least they didn’t vote Utah 4th in 2008.

We've never been the media darling...

Well we were in 2004. But that took a long time. I remember Fresno getting more publicity out of their wins against terrible Washington and K-State teams. It wasn’t until they fell to LA Tech (haha) that people turned to Utah. Even then, the Broncos stole a great deal of the show.

In 2008, we were waiting in the shadows for 90% of the season. Even after our win against TCU, many dismissed the Utes as a team with a light schedule and a very narrow win, at home, over a team that got blown up (at least at first glance) by the Sooners.

Forget that TCU lost that game way early in the season – it was proof positive the Utes couldn’t handle Oklahoma.

I suspect, if we start 1-0 and then 2-0 and so on, it’ll be similar this season.

Agreed, although they briefly gave Utah a lot of love after the Sugar Bowl win

Mostly just because it was a great story.

The sad thing is that the media hype has so much of an affect on where teams are ranked at the end of the season. Their vote isn’t part of the BCS formula, but since they’re the ones covering college football, they heavily influence the coaches and Harris poll, in my opinion.

Regret

Stupid

- The lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind; dull.

Mistake

- An error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.

After the BIG win against Pitt at home next Thursday the getting to 5-0 the next 4 weeks I am sure our Utes will have the respect we deserve for that AP Poll
