Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Anyone else feel like a kid waiting for Christmas?

I'm not sure why but I am more excited about this year than any other year I can remember.... Maybe it's the prospect of dominating the MTW and leaving with one last title... Maybe it's a residual PAC-12 high... Maybe it's getting a great game right off the bat.... the potential of this Offense...  the coaching staff... getting to end it all with BYU at home!!!! Perhaps it's all the above.  All I know for sure is that I'm having a hard time focusing on much else.  I wake up hoping there will be a new story with new information, or a prediction from some know it all sports guru that has the UTES as a sleeper... ANYTHING! I want this season as bad as Ralphie wants a Red Ridder BBgun!  It gotten to the point I'm starting to see Jazzy, MeanBob, and the Wolfman as spirit guides sent to help me through the dessert that is July and August... But to be honest they're more like crack dealers ... "Hey man got some info, got a story, latest injury report, new slant on the game... good stuff man, good stuff... you want some?"  YES!!!!  Yes I do... Oh, I'm such a junkie.

Get here already!

haha, that's pretty much how I see myself - a drug dealer.

Pushing the good stuff.

Yes. Utah football has had an amazing buildup each season since 2003. This year is probably the most excited I’ve ever been because A) we’ve got the best home opener since maybe Oregon in 1995 (here’s to a better outcome) and B) we’ve got a chance to be a really, really, really good team. Those two together = teh win!

The only thing missing is ESPN.

Seriously, who knew the opener was going to be this good?

Thank you, Pitt, for fielding a great team this year. When this match-up was announced a few years ago, I was intrigued but not necessarily excited. That has definitely changed.

Here’s to a top-15 opponent (and hopefully a Utah win) to start the season!

I keep accidentally eating my pets. Maybe I should get something less appetizing, like a cat instead of a Twinkie.

I can't think of the last time Utah opened against a top-15 team at home...

Our home openers since the McBride era started:

1990: Fresno St. (L)
1991: USU (W)
1992: Oregon State (W)
1993: USU (W)
1994: Idaho State (W)
1995: Oregon (L)
1996: Fresno St. (W) - Utah didn’t have their home opener until FOUR weeks in. Wow!
1997: USU (L)
1998: Louisville (W) – opening of Rice-Eccles Stadium
1999: USU (W)
2000: Arizona (L)
2001: USU (W)
2002: Indiana (W)
2003: USU (W)
2004: Texas A&M (W)
2005: Arizona (W)
2006: Northern Arizona (W)
2007: Air Force (L)
2008: UNLV (W)
2009: USU (W)

So a lot of games against bad teams. Even the BCS games weren’t all that great outside of Oregon in ’95 and A&M in ’04. Lots of games, as well, against Utah State.

Utah’s record in home openers since McBride took over: 15-5. Whittingham is 4-1.

And this one has even more anticipation because it's not just the home opener, it's the season opener.

This is true. Many of those games came with Utah already 0-1 on the season.

Specifically 2006 and 2007. Hard to get excited for an opener when you’re already one up in the loss column.

I’ll say this, though, 2006’s game against NAU is when I realized our fan base had grown by a wide margin. The Utes had just lost a week earlier in an ugly contest to the Bruins and the stadium was packed for an FCS team.

I took that at the NAU game. You can see more of my photos for that game here.

Nice

And that was coming off a let-down 7-5 season the year before.

That UCLA game was such a disappointment, but it made the 2007 upset that much more satisfying.

44-6 i believe with ben olsen leaving with a broken jaw?

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 10 days till the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.

Felt bad for the kid, honestly

But wasn’t it an awesome game?

Yup. And we won't ever discuss what happened a week later.

I still remember going thinking we had absolutely no shot of winning. Then Grady had that TD pass on the first drive and I looked to my friend and thought, “could this happen?”

Probably one of the most complete and awesome games I’ve ever attended. We just up and kicked their asses from start to finish.

put a smile on my face and olsen ended up breaking a leg in another game

then numerous concussions and then a broken foot. i think byu should be glad he went to ucla after his mission.

Yeah

It’s a big opener since we can now compete in games of this magnitude.

When I was growing up, no one like Pittt would have come across the country to play here. I am hoping that D-line of ours comes through and that the linebackers are a group of togh guys. That will make things a lot better.

I know everyone is drinking the “offense is awesome” kool-aid, but I for one shall not partake until I see them play a few games because we had a good line and talent last year and goofed off two games we could have won.

So, yeah, I think we have the tools, but we have a tough schedule this year because we’re marked for death and some of our foes are pretty fine. That said, yeah, I want an undefeated season, in the worst way.

I just want to hammer the hell out of the MWC.

A lot of eyes are going to be on Utah from P-10 country.

I remember in 2004 watching TCU stumble all around the C-USA and questioning whether the MWC should’ve expanded to include the Frogs. I was wrong, obviously, but their final season in that conference was abysmal.

It’s funny, because I remember re-watching the A&M game that Thursday night when I got home from it on ESPN and the Frogs were hosting Northwestern on ESPN2 that night. They barely, BARELY, won (and this was when no one lost to NW). They were talking about BCS busters and I think Corso said TCU was his pick to bust the BCS (they had come remarkably close the year before). Then they went 5-6.

Yikes.

MWC

Definitely, want to dominate on the way out.

I know

But this is 45 years of broken heart here. If I am teh skeptic, forgive me. No one wants a great season more than I do and I’d love to see our offense get off which would mean: 3 years with an experienced QB and that our OCs have gotten it together.

Whit K Whit’s proven defensive coaching, that would mean a lot to us.

Forgive me if I’m tentative.

Utah by 5!

UTES by 5!

I used to have one of those RED hands!!!! Nice out!

Even if we lost this came we could still finish with a 10-2 mark and at worst a 10-4 (Bowl win) mark. Thats nothing to have a broken heart about :).

I grew up under the 4-season of Mt. Olympus. I remember the 80’s… lots of love and loosing. This is a new era… all these teams know is success and winning. And winning is just as much about expectation as it is about habit.

What flavor of Kool-Aid would you like?

...others probably have targets on their backs too

although Utah is leaving at the end of the season, folks still want to get up for TCU (since they are expected to kill everyone), and byu (inflamed arrogance over the past few weeks considering Independence). I agree with the rest of the group though.. should be a great season and I’m looking forward to watching the Notre Dame and BYU game in person (I live in Pac-12 country).

Kid in a candy store!

A solid top 15 win for our opener would certainly catapult the rankings and open some eyes nationally. A game certainly not to miss! I hope Pitt brings a better team than their Pittiful Fiesta Bowl team from ’04.
