So I'm here with Lone Star Ute, and we were reminiscing.... Where is the Ute Warrior?!
The Red Tail Hawk is an outrage!
It makes no sense as we are the Utah "UTES" not the "Utah Red tail Hawks"
Bring him Back! Horse, full head dress, war paint, spear, and all!
I need some of our talented fact checkers to look into this.... As I remeber it was a University thing and not offensive to Ute tribe and payed triblute to Ute indians.
Politicians be damned!!!!!!!!!!! (Skake fist in the air and wave defiantly)

Not to be the PC liberal that I am...
But I believe the Ute tribe actually objected to the use and since we’ve consistently had a great relationship with the tribe, the U decided to drop it.
Then again, who knows if I’m right. I just remember hearing that (the Ute Warrior is before my time).

Forst Cuch smoothed it out with the tribal council… the rest you can figure out. We’re lucky to have the name Utes.
So there you have it Ute Nation… Red Tail Hawk it is.

Red Tail Hawks is a fine Mascot if it offends the tribe. We never did anything vulgar like the tomahawk chop, not that I ever saw. Of course, when I was in school I don’t recall us having much of a band either . . .did we have a band . . .

But couldn’t they have chosen something a bit more powerful? Red tailed hawk? Kind of small and not very scary.

It's a state wide bird
It is really a beautiful raptor. I’ve spent many fine hours watching Reds hunt, they’re amazing and common there.
Also, I think we’re the only Red Tailed Hawks out there aren’t we? I mena, there are many tigers, eagles, falcons . . .only one Red Tail. Used to be that was from being spanked too . . .
What's Miami of Ohio?

The Miami tribe. Their masot since 1997?
Swoop, the RedHawk. Not the Red Tailed Hawk, just the Redhawk, all one word. So, now all teams are “The Redhawks” which has a nice ring to it.
Utah’s mascot, Swoop, was introduced in 1996 with consent of the Ute Tribal Council. So, we are still the “Utes” but our mascot is not a Ute warrior. The NCAA was pissed until 2005 when they stopped tossing toys and we calmly explained it to them.
