Utes' D, Phillips' leg lift Utah to victory

What. A. Game.

Holy hell. You couldn't ask for a better start to the 2010 season. This game had it all - a blowout in the making, a comeback, a missed FG as time expired (that didn't actually happen due to a timeout) and an overtime UTAH WIN!

I'll have more on the game later, but damn did the defense impress (for most of the game). It wasn't always pretty, but whenever you beat the 15th ranked team in the nation, you're doing something right.

Utah is 1-0!

GO UTES!

Most impressed with the defense

They only let Pitt drive the field once, and it was mostly the result of one bad secondary mistake. Other than that, the only offense Pitt had were off turnovers and shanked kicks.

Once again, Utah’s defense is solid. That makes me happy.

Agreed...

Offense looked good for the most part. Penalties killed ‘em, tho. That’s to be expected with it being the first game.

I just hope we can clean that junk up. We’ve got far easier competition the next few weeks – so now is the time to ease into the season.

This game was big. And we won it.

The FROSH get his INT!

A bit latter and more important than I had predicted…. seems he saved it for last! :-)

That was huge.

I wanted to cry when they missed the FG and Whitt called a timeout.

The funny thing is, I told my friend after the first timeout I hated when coaches did that because I could see a scenario where they missed, but got a second chance because of a TO.

Sure enough, it happens. Everyone was going nuts when it missed. But I knew Whitt had called a timeout.

Not a bad move, I guess, just unfortunate. Thankfully we won!

by JazzyUte on Sep 3, 2010 12:02 AM MDT up reply actions

That was tough

I thought we seriously won when he missed but than after I figured out what was happening I knew that he would make the field goal, I’m not a fan of the trying to freeze the kicker, the guy’s not that good of a kicker just let him kick it! Ah well.

PITT's MANBOY RB nets 75 yards on 25 carries

And the MANCHILD WR… One TD / play on a break down in coverage.

THE D WAS STOUT! LOOK OUT (MTW, TCU, ND, & BYU)!

I am REALLY excited to see what we can do in conference this year with our D. We won’t see athletes the likes of Lewis or Baldwin for the rest of the year, but we will see much more balanced attacks.

Our D-line were a pack of beasts letting our “inexperienced” linebackers feast on tackles. It was so great seeing the Utes dominate the line on both sides of the ball.

I like it. Bill Guerin’s uppercut is so awesome it wins fights he’s not even in.

Agreed. This defense looks scary good.

If the offense can cut down on the penalties, they’ll be right there with the D!

Both the O and D lines

Were stellar. That vaunted D line of Pitt’s that everyone was freaking out about? Yeah that was nothing. I love that Cullen shut down Romeus for the WHOLE GAME!!!

The best hits..

were all on dion lewis, we sent a message early it wasn’t going to be easy for him, defense was huge.

Favorite hit of the game

When Pitt was making a goal line push in the 3rd (at about the 10-15), and on 1st and 10 Dion Lewis was calling out the MUSS on their side of the field. The very next play he got the ball, ran it for a solid 1 1/2 yards and got hit straight on and bend in half backward.

Nice game!

That was fun to watch.

It was a fun game, but

I cannot believe we kept them in that game with those penalties and ball handling errors. Tell you what though, when you give a team that good that many chances and still beat them? You aint that bad yourself.

I am hoping we smooth off some of the rough edges, Cullen is a stud at left tackle, certainly was last night, and the Defense, without so many guys . . .where the hell did they come from? Any doubts, any at all, that Whittingham chooses his defenseive staff and schemes carefully?

by Aardvark on Sep 3, 2010 5:03 AM MDT up reply actions

Shaky start...

I honestly felt kind of bad for Smithson, he was hyped up a lot and even had his own music video playing during the game. But luckily we didn’t lose because of his two fumbles early in the game. Christopher stepped up along with Brooks to be the two top targets in the receiving game.

by utahmanami on Sep 3, 2010 7:52 AM MDT up reply actions

We definately need to clean up in some areas.

Penalties and turn overs desperately need addressed. But I was very impressed with the D, they were stout! O looked like it was capable of blowing up the Panther D, but the penalties killed us. We need to work on cleaning up but if we can get that under control this team is clearly talented enough to go far.

Heck of a game!

I missed most of the second half due to overlap with the Seahawks (did see the end though), but you guys looked really impressive in the first half overcoming those two fumbles.

Thoughts from a Bama fan

Hey Ute fans! Ever since the whipping ya’ll put on Bama 2 years ago, I have paid particular attention to the Utes. I have to say, I am very impressed. Admittedly, it was the first game of the season, so Pitt may be over/underrated, who knows. We’ll see as the season plays out. Either way, it was a great win and a great game to watch. What I came here to comment about was the tenacity of the defense Utah seems to field, particularly the defensive line. Those guys really get after it! Congratulations on the win, and good luck for the rest of the season!

by nashvillebama on Sep 3, 2010 7:35 AM MDT reply actions

Thanks!

I have to say Bama has been playing some mighty fine football since that game (and before, really,) and it’s always great to see a team you have played be successful. Best of luck in your upcoming season.

Yeah D line

They were awesome. I also noticed that Baldwin caught a few balls, but he won zero jump balls against the 5 inch shorter Burton who defended him man to man all night.

D line is an area of particularly insane interest by this staff. They find anyone large who can move and that’s where they go. They played about 8 guys last night with two distinct setups (smash mouth and fast).

I was impressed with the O line as well because Pitt’s strength is it’s front seven.

BAMA...

I have to say, meeting y’all the day before the Sugar Bowl… with all your “Sweet Home Alabama” and your “Rooooooooooooooooll, tide roll!” and the “Overrated” chants directed at UTAH… I thought your fans to be nothing more than a collection of cocky blowhards (Almost as bad a BYU fans… absent the holier than holy’s moral high ground). However, after a serving of humble pie your fans were very gracious in defeat. That impressed me. Your continued attention and respect continues to impress me.

Perhaps we’ll meet again… soon.

I felt the same way about the Pitt fans

There were a few of them in the MUSS with us, and although there were a few good series of profane outburts back and forth, I was actually really impressed with how chill the PITT fans were. I really enjoyed talking to them, and thought they were really good fans.

There was none of the “I’m such a victim” and “This would never happen at Lavelle Edwards Stadium” or “Our fans would never treat other fans like this” attitude coming from the PITT fans. They seemed to know that we would get the exact same treatment in PITT’s house, and they were more than willing to dish the trashtalk back.

It was very refreshing to see.

What a game!!!

I watched the game with a buddy who went to TCU. He was able to finally experience what a loyal UTE fan has to go through in big games – close finishes, maddening mistakes and a scrappy team.
The bad news is the Utes were there own worst enemy. The good news is the bulk of their problems came from special teams which should be correctable. Couldn’t have been happier with the defense especially since that was my biggest worry. Go UTES!

Did the crowd come across as really loud on TV? Because that stadium was going nuts.

when Pitt had the false start penalties..

it was funny because it got louder and louder each time they got a penalty. the crowd definately played a big role.

by utahmanami on Sep 3, 2010 11:52 AM MDT up reply actions

As loud as I've ever heard it

It helps when you are in the student section, but it looks like the North End Zone was definitely pulling their weight as well.

I would like to think we will get as loud for the TCU and BYU games, but I don’t see how it’s possible. That was as loud as I’ve ever heard the stadium be in 20 years of attending games.

Love the false start countdowns from the MUSS.

A lot of people on the internets are saying how great the student section looked.

by JazzyUte on Sep 3, 2010 12:55 PM MDT up reply actions

our o-line was tough and our d-line was dominant

…but I was actually most impressed with our linebackers. Matt Martinez and Chaz Walker played their hearts out tonight coming into the game with very little experience. If tonight is a preview of things to come, I think we’re in for a wild ride.

These games are not good for my mental health

I still haven’t recovered from Syracuse going from #1 to being demolished by Bradley in Salt Lake City. Now this game (which was double good for me, Utah winning and defeating a Big East rival of the Cuse)!

But my optimism level is increasing. I just hope there’s a bunch of blowouts for the U. I love wearing my Utah gear for football, then switching to my other alma mater’s gear for the BB season.

And thank you Versus for showing this game in Southern California. ESPN had East Tennessee or something.

I hear you, man

Some people love these close games, but I hate the heart attacks. Luckily I’m close enough to make it to the games again, because all the yelling and jumping is really cathartic for my nerves. When I watch these tight contests on TV I feel like I’m going to come out of my skin.

I want blowouts

I don’t know what’s worse. TV or live. Last night just about caused a stroke. Especially when Pitt missed the field goal. And then they really didn’t.

My thoughts

Let’s give it up for Utah’s D-Line! Those guys were beasts! And while we’re at it, let’s give a shout-out to our O-Line as well. I think the thing that impressed me most was how quiet all of Pitt’s stars were in this game – Lewis, Baldwin, Romeus, Sheard. I don’t think it’s because they’re overrated or because they played poorly – I think Utah just played amazingly against them.

Obviously there are some major issues that need to be addressed; penalties, turnovers, lapses in the secondary, punt protection. This was a sloppy game, and I swear Utah was trying to give it away in the fourth. But I believe all of these problems can and will be corrected. I think this team showed a lot of promise, and I think a 10+ win season is definitely possible.

Conference play opens next week. Let’s give the MWC a proper going-away party, especially those of us fortunate enough to be able to attend the games in person. Go Utes!

Props to the D

We’re going to be good this year. I was especially impressed with CB Brandon Burton. He shut down Baldwin, and the touchdown was a miscommunication and not his fault.

Love the reporting...

Did you notice the AP article (everywhere) that says “Utah won its 18th straight”. I wish that were true…. should be “18th straight home game”, yes. Impressive in its own right, but not the same. I love how one writer can make a mistake and have it end up everywhere…
