Dienhart interview with Whittingham hints at the possibility of NFL coaching one day
Tom Dienhart did a good Q-&-A with Coach Whittingham after Utah's big win over Pitt Thursday. While most of the stuff is routine questions and answers, the last couple answers by Whittingham were very, very telling.
Would you like to finish your career at Utah?
"It's a great place to work and I get asked that question often. I think this is one of the best jobs in the country. But this profession is so volatile, so you never know what's on the horizon. But I can say without a doubt that I am very happy here."
Are you interested in coaching in the NFL?
"My dad [Fred] was an NFL guy [an assistant with the Rams and Raiders]. It always has intrigued me. I have friends in the NFL, like Andy Reid with the Eagles. So, who knows, maybe down the road."
Now this probably doesn't mean much overall. But I did find it interesting Whittingham was so candid about discussing the possibility of becoming a NFL coach down the road.
Whatever the hell that means.
Anyway, read the interview. It's actually pretty good and gives you an idea of what the coaches are expecting out of this team and how they're keeping expectations realistic.

There is a point
Where many coaches get bored and need a new challenge. Makes me sick to think about, but . . .
Plus, Whittingham knows the drill
To wit, there are only two kinds of coaches: those who’ve been fired and those who will be. Presumably, as long as he’s happy at Utah, he’ll stay — unless someone comes along and blows him away with an offer he can’t refuse. Which in turn is one reason why UU is working to move up — bigger conference, expand the stadium, etc. — making his job a better job, and thus making it harder for anyone else to blow him away. But even then, who can say what happens down the line? The next new president or AD could be someone who can’t stand him, or who makes his life unpleasant in other ways. All in all, if you can’t control the future (and none of us can), why borrow trouble by pretending you can?
