Burton declares for NFL draft

According to the D-News, Brandon Burton has made the decision to forego his senior year and enter the NFL draft.

Star-divide

I have mixed feelings.  I am happy for him.  He is a great kid who had a great career and capped it off by playing well against BYU and Boise.

On the other hand, I am sad to see him go.  We could really use him next year.  But, with everything, this could be a blessing in disguise.  Conroy Black will get a chance to start next year, and the other spot will be battled for.  It will allow some of the younger guys to get valuable experience.

I have no doubt that he will  be successful.

Thoughts?

Just read this too

I never like to see good players leave early, but Burton has a great opportunity, and I don’t know how many of us wouldn’t make the same decision in his situation. It’s hard to risk a possible career-ending injury in college next year when you’re grading late first round / early second round in NFL draft projections.

I wish him the best, but I don’t see how this could bode well for Utah’s secondary next season.

I keep accidentally eating my pets. Maybe I should get something less appetizing, like a cat instead of a Twinkie.

look ahead

If he comes back next year, we have Conroy and Burton starting at the corners. Then we have Greg Bird and McGil in all likelihood at safeties. That is three seniors, gone. It would be a similar rebuild. Now, it allows us to start developing guys sooner. Thats all I am saying.

People smarter than you say he's a late first rounder...

The D had you on your heels more than any other team you played in 2010 to open the game…but eventually the D is going to tire, become demoralized, and look shoddy if the offense can’t capitalize on the gifts that were given to them.

Congratulations on beating a Utah offense that couldn’t fight it’s way out of a wet paper bag.

i agree. the only game the utah defense did not play well in was vs tcu.

On february 5th 2011 at UFC 126 Jon "Bones" Jones will show the world that their was no need for the MMA community to hype this man because this guy is a beast with many skills and i personally will feel Ryan "Darth" Bader's pain after this fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.

I was referring to the comment above about him playing well vs BYU and Boise

I think he had his hands full vs. Boise and if I’m not mistaken was beaten on some crucial plays. Don’t recall him having much to do with the 1Q troubles for Boise.

I’m not saying that takes away from his draft stock, just don’t think he had a good game. Then again, I don’t know if any corners had good games trying to defend Boise’s passing game and their receivers.

Good luck figuring out that paper bag thing.

WET paper bag...

…get it right!

I haven’t watched the game again (for obvious reasons), but if my memory serves, Burton’s coverage is part of what made the majority of the 1st half successful (at least on the defensive side).

I think the 80 yd run was the gut punch that knocked the wind out of the D. Past that point, it’s hard for me to put blame on Burton or anyone on the D. When you watch the offense struggle possession after possession, you lose your energy to keep bringing it vs. an offense as good as BSU. Sure he got burnt, but the talent is still there.

…additionally, people have said they’ve been more impressed by Sean Smith or Brice McCain…but they forget that 2008-2009 we had a secondary that sent 5 guys (Smith, Stanford, McCain, Johnson…& now Burton) to the NFL. Blechen will probably make it from this class, but the rest are not NFL quality. Burton may not have looked as good this year, but the other guys had a ton of help out there.
