I think Utah is tanking in the Pac-12 this year just to screw the MWC

And all the non-AQs for that matter. This has to be on purpose, right? Right?

We "should" win vs. Oregon St.

Let’s not forget that Cal was hungry, and Tedford had never lost 4 straight.

That said, we really are looking like the top of the bottom of the barrel at this point…what I would call 4th tier.

We’re still a team that should be 6-6…but UCLA is scary. They will be playing for bowl eligibility, as will we, likely. Also, Neuheisel’s job will be on the line.

I don’t see us winning at Arizona or Washington St.

If only we had gotten that JC QB that ended up at Washington :-(

If that was true...

Hays would have destroyed the hopes and dreams of two programs in one year.

by notblue19 on Oct 22, 2011 8:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Still think we weren't fortunate to win the Pitt game?

WE SUCK! Specifically our O-line can’t block. Our defense is good against the run (most of the time), but that is IT, they can’t do shit most of the time against the pass. We are being out-coached. Our reliance on a injury prone, super fragile QB was really dumb and has reduced our offense into a complete joke. Why did Whit red-shirt Shreve? Whit has lots of explaining to do. What is he saving him for? Perhaps Shreve sucks too, but I am sick of Hays and have been since the ASU game. As I said last week, we cannot expect our D to carry this team. As for our current QB (if you can call him that) John Hays has HIGH SCHOOL level talent. Worse than that he is not smart. Dumb ass fumbling after talking about improvement.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Oct 22, 2011 9:11 PM MDT up reply actions

We were fortunate Pitt had a horrible defensive game plan...

Cal dared us to pass and we did and we threw interceptions and couldn’t find a ground game.

Pitt didn’t stack the box most the game. That’s why White was allowed to run wild and it took pressure off Hays.

You want to beat Utah? Stack the box and let Hays throw a dozen picks.

by JazzyUte on Oct 22, 2011 9:14 PM MDT up reply actions

I should've said 'forced' not 'dared'...

They did force Utah. It wasn’t much a dare because Utah really had no other choice.

by JazzyUte on Oct 22, 2011 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions

I was forgiving of Hays at first...

His first couple of games it felt like he could be a gamer who clearly made young mistakes. Now I do not think he has the football iq to play qb at this level. How we could crap the bed regarding depth at such a key position is mind blowing. With the Pac 12 being a very qb driven league, it could be as many as 3-4 years before we have a legit contender for pac 12 south. (future qb junior senior seasons)

by notblue19 on Oct 22, 2011 8:12 PM MDT reply actions

Tonight Hays showed us...

why pople dont try throwing the ball while doing a 360 turn…

THROW THE BALL AWAY FFS!! I HAVE NOT SEEN HIM THROW A BALL AWAY ONE GAWD DAMN TIME! Sure the line is doing shhiiitay, but you dont HAVE to take every sack! Im calling James Lark and telling him to move his ass from Provo to SLC, he’ll never see game time @ byu now. Riley will keep starting, Heaps will replace him when he’s gone and they think that he’s improved.

Why was mr. fragile jordan wynn our only decent option at QB

how could the utes fuck this up so bad? what was whittingham and the coaching staff thinking?!?!?

jon hays is horrible

by utahmanami on Oct 22, 2011 8:40 PM MDT reply actions

Because the coaches screwed the pooch big-time after BJ graduated...

It was a huge, huge blunder and probably the single biggest mistake Whittingham has made since arriving at Utah. Too many times he’s taken quarterback talent and turned then into defensive players or receivers and we’ve neglected that position for far too long. Yes, Wynn was a great get out of HS (originally had signed with Colorado), but the lack of depth at QB is terrifying.

You look at BYU and they’ve done it right. I hate admitting it, but they were able to easily replace Beck, Hall and even Heaps because they’ve got solid depth at that spot.

We’ve got no one except Shreve, and the coaches decided to RS him.

This season was a mess.

by JazzyUte on Oct 22, 2011 9:05 PM MDT up reply actions

Doesn't completely excuse it

But it doesn’t help that they had a QB recruit de-commit and go to U-Dub with just a couple weeks of recruiting to go.

by UnHoly Ram on Oct 22, 2011 9:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Even then, we'd be banking on a freshman...

NOT a good spot to be in. We went after a JC quarterback when the coaches realizes none of the quarterbacks were ready if Wynn went down.

Going the JC route is not a bad idea IF YOU GET A GOOD ONE. But Hays wasn’t ever going to be a FBS starter. He was set to give up football because the college he was going to attend DROPPED IT. That is a huge red flag and the coaches messed up by either not going after a JC prospect earlier, or getting one who had legitimate FBS talent.

by JazzyUte on Oct 22, 2011 9:17 PM MDT up reply actions

I have a bad feeling about Shreve

Did we really need an extra traveling spot so much that we left our backup QB home? Or were we really that scared we’d fuck up and burn a redshirt for no reason (Pedroza). Something smells fishy with this Shreve business.

by jrj84105 on Oct 22, 2011 9:10 PM MDT up reply actions

I can't think of many reasons...

Unless, prior to the game, they were convinced Hays was turning a corner. Still, what was gained by leaving him home?

by JazzyUte on Oct 22, 2011 9:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Fighting his coach

Shreve lost a year for getting in a fight with his coach right? I wonder how a kid like that feels sitting the bench behind Hays. I just wonder if he’s pulling an attitude
(maybe justifiable).

by jrj84105 on Oct 22, 2011 9:22 PM MDT up reply actions

I was wrong last year about benching Wynn after the ND game

Because Cain was terrible too, but better than Hays.

Whit has done a poor job in recruiting. I know we lost Derrick Brown to UW, so perhaps I am expecting too much in wishing for a decent QB.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Oct 22, 2011 9:23 PM MDT up reply actions

We've done a great job recruiting on the defense...

And I do like our receivers. But our offensive line is awful and he dropped the ball with the QBs.

You can’t win without at least an average QB.

by JazzyUte on Oct 22, 2011 9:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Ah...well, agreed.

You know, I hate saying it, but Johnson was the last good, consistent QB here and he was a Meyer recruit.

by JazzyUte on Oct 22, 2011 9:36 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree.

Wynn has been a MAJOR disappointment because he is so injury prone. As for current non-throwing arm shoulder injury, I was in disbelief when he didn’t come out for the second half of the UW game. I didn’t see him get hit. The guy is really made of glass.

I hope we get Wilson and hope Chase Hanson becomes a Scott Mitchell type of Utah find.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Oct 22, 2011 9:40 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Johnson's legacy is more consistant than his performance was.

I remember a lot of up and down games and often doubting Utah fans. He was a master of the two minute offense, which I would argue Wynn was heading down that path (watch final drive against USC for Wynn’s two minute abilities) I think we all remember Brian Johnson for his big moments, which Wynn may never get a chance to showcase. Hope I am wrong though.

by notblue19 on Oct 22, 2011 9:47 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree

Brian JOhnson’s legacy is far better htan he ever was. He is remembered for teh sugar bowl, but man was he annoying to watch at times. Still Id take him over anyone we have now.

It doesn't matter how annoying or bad BJ looked at times...

He owns the most wins in Utah football history and led the program to its greatest season and win.

I don’t think fans care if a QB puts up gaudy numbers or looks perfect getting us to perfection. We just want someone who is a leader, doesn’t mess up at key points and does well enough. Johnson did that.

by JazzyUte on Oct 23, 2011 1:41 PM MDT up reply actions

no i agree

dont get me wrong. I loved Brian Johnson. More often than not, he got it done when it mattered. He had ice in his vains. Its just those 2008 New Mexico games or the Oregon State games where I just got so frustrated with him,but then he comes up big at the end.

He is probably the most cerebral player I have ever seen. Wish we had him still

And he’s coming next season.

by TomahawkRed on Oct 24, 2011 2:07 AM MDT up reply actions

read back what you just typed

like you said he’s a prospect and that doesn’t mean a damn thing until he proves his worth in the college game. and you sure as hell don’t throw a true freshman to the dogs in an AQ conference, especially one where defenses are bred to stop a QB. only teams with huge amounts of talent can hope to do that and face it we don’t have huge amounts of talent or depth to gamble on a true freshman. prospects almost always need grooming to become great or at least good.

by khaostheory117 on Oct 24, 2011 5:18 AM MDT up reply actions

Embarrassing.

Our small Utah contingent left before halftime. Being among all the Cal and Wisconsin fans, it was embarrassing to be cheering for a pathetic team stuck with a high school QB.

Our offense is high school level. The run game is spotty. John White is a hard runner, but he isn’t explosive and the O-line is helping him. Our defense is one dimensional. They have been vulnerable to mid-level passing game ALL YEAR.

Coach Whit has done a poor job this year of dealing with the Wynn adversity. If I were him, I would NOT redshirt Shreve.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Oct 22, 2011 9:18 PM MDT reply actions

How many QBs are re going to take this year?

Looks like we’re putting all our eggs in one basket with Wilson. Hopefully he doesn’t get converted to a LB during spring camp.

I understand QBs in high school are usually the best athletes. But at some time you have to recruit a REAL QB.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Oct 22, 2011 9:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Wilson

Actually, I think some programs were recruiting Wilson as a TE. If by some miracle we get Cooper Bateman I really wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled the switcheroo again.

by jrj84105 on Oct 22, 2011 9:59 PM MDT up reply actions

But he is actually being recruited by Stanford. Our chances of landing Bateman are slim to none.

Dunn showed he could be a playmaker a few times last year. I think that depending on how some guys develope, and what happens with our qb situation, Utah could actually have an exciting offense within a year or so.

yeah, his end arounds against USC and a couple of other times were good.

His wussy fumble against ASU really pissed me off. He just gave them the ball after being hit low.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Oct 22, 2011 9:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Kind of like Shaky last year...

Shaky was a playmaker who would sometimes muff a punt, or have a fumble. Dunn can make plays happen, and I will take the upside of that.

by notblue19 on Oct 22, 2011 9:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Dunn has been securing the ball much better since that ASU game

You can see him holding it high and tight anytime there’s a chance of contact. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

Did I!?!

That was the fifth time in the last four games he’s done that. Must be a genius. Once vs. UW, twice vs. ASU. once vs. Pitt and once vs. Cal. Everytime our QB gets lit up from the blindside as he helps Mason double team some DT that doesn’t need it. He’s ignoring the guy RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM THAT NOBODY ELSE COULD POSSIBLY BLOCK! If I could edit all five together you all would be amazed at the level of “space cadet”, that he’s achieved. To do it once is jaw-dropping. But five times in consecutive games, after almost certainly getting ripped up and down during film sessions every time he does it, is awe inspiring.

White needs 100+ yards a game for us to have a chance. Those 100 yards have to come against a stacked box. The opposing team’s passing game must be nearly as bad as our own. UCLA may fit that bill. WSU will beat us hands down. Arizona will probably beat us unless Star breaks Foles. Oregon St and Colorado are potential wins if they play poorly.

Ignorant question...

We know Jon Hays is no good as QB, but how good is BJ at QB coach? I know he’s bright, was a great D1 QB (but not a good fit for the next level), but does that make him a great coach? It seems that many of the mistakes that are being made could be fixed with good coaching. How much of that is on BJ’s shoulders?

by UAEUTE on Oct 22, 2011 11:09 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

BJ

BJ is a young non-LDS guy that recruits from with whom Texas and Cali recruits can relate. He’s not a QB coach. The lack of a QB coach is a reason why we don’t have QB recruits. BJ should be moved to recruiting. It sounds like Wynn would make a better coach than BJ.

Shreve is going to redshirt this year no matter what. Wynn getting an additional year made sure of that. No reason to think that Wilson is going to come in and light it up until he actually gets into practice in the spring – maybe even next summer/fall (I’ve heard he may go his full senior year in order to play volleyball…not confirmed). Right now, we are living or dying with Hays – Robles – and Shultz, no ifs ands or buts.

I really though that we were going to give Robles a better look than 2 run plays and a 3rd and long. I was a bit disappointed he wasn’t able to come in and get a serious chance to get into the game, perhaps they are waiting to give him more practice reps this week, but I’m not sure with the way that Coach Whit is talking about it.

It'll be Hays...

He’s our guy and we’ll sink or swim with him.

Then the coaches better hit the recruiting trail hard for a serviceable JC quarterback that at least has general interest from a few FBS teams. Hays had absolutely zero interest from any level of program from the FBS and certainly should not be a Pac-12 starter.

Knowing Wynn is not particularly durable, it’s imperative the coaches the bring in a capable and competent QB to lead this team next year if Wynn can’t. It might not be pretty at times, but in a situation like that, all you’re doing is hoping to get enough wins to bowl eligibility. Right now, that might not happen with Hays at QB.

What to do now

For coach Whit, it is time to show that you are an elite coach. Let’s prepare Tyler Shreve for a start against the final low rung of the PAC 12 (we are there without Wynn). That way we can have a quarterback controversy next year.

Sitake needs to be able to stop a left-handed quarterback from rolling left…why didn’t we stop that? On that note, why didn’t Chow roll Jon out? We are being out coached by lesser coaches. Jon Hays is a tough kid, but his footwork his horrible and, because of that poor footwork, he throws off his back foot.

Let’s coach better!

Pesonnel issues

Div 2 QB, 1 legit RB (I worried about Langi when they played him at FB in the All-American game when surrounded by other top athletes), below avg. receiving corps (by PAC-12 standards), and abysmanl O-Line. Not surprising to witness the results. However, this group could’ve faked it in the MWC and had an 8-10 win season. Difference in competition has exposed them. Wish we could see the 2004 or 2008 team with this schedule. Would not go undefeated, but would compete for the division. Heck, I’d love to see the 1994 team coached by Meyer with this schedule!

I think the 2004 & 2008 teams would have had a shot at being undefeated

Maybe/Maybe not, but Urban always had a game plan that wouldn’t fail and BJ/King Louie just wouldn’t let our team lose

That GIF

doesn’t go far enough, the funniest part Batman looks to throw it in the water, but there’s a mama duck and three little duckings following her.

BTW Who was the QB that game came in for a series?

I couldn’t quite catch the announcer. He said something like… Rofles? Anyway why didn’t he play more? He didn’t really get a chance

In other words, Go Bears!

Griff robles, highly touted out of high school. Went on mission, came back, I thought he impressed. Redshirted, then was 3rd string last year and then they moved him to LB for some reason.
He can bomb it, don’t know why he hasn’t been given a shot

Hate to say it, but it might be time to just give it to Robles full-time...

Build up depth at QB. He could surprise and give us a fall-back option if Wynn goes down once again next year.

I hate to say it...but I told you so...

This is exactly what you get the year after you change offenses. It takes at least 2 seasons to get into the groove of a new way of doing things on O. When I said it was a terrible time to make a change, and that we didn’t have the horses to run a down hill pro set offense, everyone said ‘trust Whitt, he knows what he’s doing.’ Well, now 4 games into our conference schedule and count them ZERO wins. If that doesn’t say ‘mistake’ I don’t know what does. The worst thing about this season is that it’s giving our recruiting chances a gigantic pile-driver.

Unfortunately the damage is done and there’s no way to change it now. All we can do is hope to get lucky in recruiting and get to a point where we can compete in the league. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but we’re going to need to temper our expectations for the team for the next SEVERAL years. Recruiting is going to be much, much more difficult after this debacle of a season.

So if we were running last year's offense, we'd be better?

I don’t think so. I know you want to come back to that point to prove your original point a month or so ago, but this has nothing to do with installing a new offense. Not when we reverted basically right back to a spread offense the second Hays entered the picture.

Do you honestly believe Hays would be better if Utah ran an exact replica of last year’s offense? I don’t. He’s an awful passer. He’s no threat whatsoever down field and teams know this. Cal stacked the box because they wanted to force Utah to pass and it works because Hays is horrible as a passer.

White can’t run now and the offense can’t move down field. It doesn’t matter what offense the Utes run, without a consistent throwing threat, teams are just going to load up to stop the run and beg us to pass knowing we can’t do it.

Doesn't the O-line have to do less in a Pro Style offense?

…than it would in a spread?

Outside of them, and Christopher…who was here last year that changing offensive styles would have affected?

by Middy_U on Oct 23, 2011 7:45 PM MDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say O-line has less to do, but the blocking scheme is different

And if you look at our offense, one of our biggest issues is constant penetration into the offensive backfield. All the D has to do is pin their ears back and come hard and we fold. If you can’t get time in the pocket even good QB’s start to look bad. And we don’t even have a good QB to begin with.

The whole reason spreads were designed was to allow a slightly less athletic team to gain advantage over the defense by forcing them to cover the whole field. That’s why people are always calling it a finesse offense. Which is the polar opposite of a pro set which is ’let’s line it up and ram it down their throats.’ In order to pull off a pro set you have to have superior athletes. Which it is painfully obvious we do not. I’m not saying that if we ran a spread we’d be the ‘Greatest Show on Turf,’ but I we’d at least be capable of scoring more than 2 times a game.

Struggling on offense happens in the first year EVERY TIME A TEAM CHANGES. I’m not saying that changing to a pro set is a bad decision long term if it was isolated to just that change. But changing your offense while at the same time going into a better conference and needing to make a splash WAS a bad idea.

could this week get any worse?

first we get stomped by cal and now i just suffered my colts getting obliterated. my two favorite teams are getting slaughtered due to the lack of a serviceable backup

proclaim your nfl team so i can bash them relentlessly lol

jk i have no energy left to attack anyone after watching both my teams get raped, skinned, and left to hang.

Can we fast rack Chase Hansen...?

What are the chances of getting Chase Hansen out of Lone Peak early enough to get to spring camp? That kid is awesome. I know they keep talking about moving him to defense, but with the QB landscape being what it is, I think it’s time to stop converting every QB recruit to other positions.
