Pac-12 roundup: You're killing me, Utah!
Utah football is having a very tough first year in the Pac-12. Along with Colorado, who most thought would suck, the Utes have failed to even win a conference game.
Programs like Washington State and UCLA, thought to be potentially the cellar of each division, have more wins in Pac-12 play than Utah.
In three of their four defeats, the Utes have essentially been laughed off the field - losing by 17 to Washington, 20 to ASU and 24 last week to Cal, who entered the game just as winless in conference as Utah.
The Utes haven't been competitive for a bulk of a conference game this season since their second overall contest of the season, a nine point loss to the USC Trojans a month and a half ago.
Will this be the week Utah finally gets that elusive conference win?
Stay tuned...
The Pac-12 Power Poll after the jump...
Team of the Week: Stanford. Cardinal like to score...a lot.
Team of the Weak: Utah. Utes cemented their position as having the worst offense in the conference in lopsided loss to Cal Saturday.
Pac-12 North:
1. Stanford Cardinal (7-0): Daaaaaaaaaamn. That's all I've gots to say.
2. Oregon Ducks (6-1): Oregon looked poised to drop a hundred on Colorado before showing a bit of mercy in their 45-2 massacre.
3. Washington Huskies (5-2): Good to see Washington's defense showed up Saturday.
4. California Golden Bears (4-3): Cal finally got its conference win in a rout of the hapless Utes.
5. Oregon St. Beavers (2-5): Here comes the second half surge by Mike Riley's Beavers. Too bad it's probably too late for a bowl berth.
6. Washington St. Cougars (3-4): The loss to Oregon State hurts because it was a winnable home game. You won't find many of those in conference play and now only one remains: their November contest against Utah. By that point, the season most likely will be over. Looks like another year without a bowl game in Pullman.
Pac-12 South:
1. Arizona St. Sun Devils (5-2): Even Dennis Erickson couldn't muck up a bye week.
2. USC Trojans (6-1): Comment vacated by the NCAA
3. Arizona Wildcats (2-5): Who's Mike Stoops again?
4. UCLA Bruins (3-3): Yeah, Rick Neuheisel is probably done.
5. Utah Utes (3-4): The final regular season showdown against Colorado and Utah could decide once and for all who's the worst team in the Pac-12! I CAN'T WAIT...
6. Colorado Buffaloes (1-7): TGFCS! Thank God For Colorado State.
Game of the Week: Stanford @ USC. This should be fun. The Trojans are actually putting together a solid season and Stanford is hitting on all cylinders. Could SC really derail Stanford's title hopes?

Who knows?
Unless the Utah offense can get at least 200 to 250 yards, I don’t have any confidence in this team.
As for some game strategy, it would help if Coach Chow would quit calling 80% (I am estimating) run plays on first down.
The fact that you’re a Utah and Ucla alum makes me thing… Norm Chow pissed you off as a OC of USC. And then he screwed up at UCLA and now in Utah he isn’t so hot. Why does Chow follow you around?
In other words, Go Bears!
You are lucky that Tom Holmoe doesn't follow you around.

"The Utes haven't been competitive for a bulk of a conference game this season since their second overall contest of the season, a nine point loss to the USC Trojans a month and a half ago."
Ha ha ha. Thanks for the laugh.
Actually, you might be interested to know that the Utes were competitive for most of the Arizona State game.
But I know it’s just Jazzy being Jazzy.
I said 'bulk'...
I know you know what that means. They were also competitive in the first half against Washington and the first quarter against Cal. That’s why I didn’t said "haven’t been competitive at all since their game against USC…
But yuck it up. In the end, the Utes have been railroaded in three of four Pac-12 games. I don’t see anything funny about that.
BULK implies to me the majority of a game, meaning over 50%
That said, Utah was competitive for the bulk of the ASU game.
Is all I’m saying.

So then they've been competitive in all but one conference game under that definition.../
And I think you’d even agree that isn’t remotely the case.
Being competitive for most of the game ain't worth much if you're giving up 14-21 points the rest of the time.
Dolphins and sharks are natural enemies. Dolphins are like, "Quit eating us," and sharks are like, "Stop smiling all the time, you morons."

I think the Utes will probably beat UCLA and Colorado...
but I have little confidence about the other games, including Washington State and Arizona, both of which probably have misleading records.

Preseason, I predicted Utah would be 9-3
And one of the three losses was Arizona.
I stick with that assessment. But, as with just about all of my predictions this year, I hope I’m wrong about that game too.

Why the hate?
Erickson is doing an excellent job this year. ASU has been very good considering how many injuries they have had and a tough first half to the season. I’m pretty sure he has two more National Championship rings than you do also.
Other than his first season, with Koetter's recruits...what has Erickson done at ASU?
2 losing seasons and a 6-6 season aided by 2 FCS school wins.
He lost to Illinois this year, a team that doesn’t look all that great now that it’s actually playing the difficult part of its schedule.
Took nearly 3 quarters to put away a Hays led Utah…that in and of itself is kind of embarrassing.
The best outlook he’s got is probably 10-4, and that’s during a year when the Pac-12 South is pretty much a cake walk for an above average team…and for all we know, based on his track record, he’s still got a loss or two up his sleeve.
…and I have 3 championship rings…ordered them on eBay.
We will see
No, the best outlook he has is 12-2 with a Rose Bowl victory. It’s always what you have you done for me lately in college football. This is the first year Erickson has played with all his recruits. Koetter left us with nothing after that first year. I’m just glad the game is played on the field and not the forums. Go Devils!
Hating Erickson has become trendy
and many in the sports fandom world have decided that doing so makes them sound smarter.
In the end, that’s all it is. He may be… MAY be… a below average coach. But he’s nowhere near the low point most would have you believe.

Erickson's M.O:
Come in, win big with his predecessor’s players, bring in the most talented, least disciplined players he can qualify for enrollment, move on to the next job one step ahead of NCAA investigators. His entire career was built on what Jimmy Johnson handed to him at Miami. Remember that big season at OrSt? He took what was there, added a few Juco’s who were enrolled for exactly one term at OSU, and caught lightning in a bottle. That was his high point. He brought in more of his own players, the team got worse, and he moved on. His rep at times has gotten so bad that he’s taken jobs at places like freaking Idaho. That’s what 2 titles will buy you when everyone knows the score.
Ducks GOOOOD. Fuskies BAAAAAD.

I'm sick of seeing utah this low
that said we need a win soooooo badly on saturday
Quite an October horror show...
To say this year has been a disappointment so far is putting it mildly. I think we have two more wins somewhere somehow… I’d love to see one tomorrow however god only knows what will happen one 1/4 to the next let alone one game to the next.
Go Utes…
I am a Utah Man sir... I will be till I die.
hey to be fair
Erickson does play a mean game of beer pong

You say negative, I say realistic...
But I’d like to meet the man who puts a positive spin on 3-4 and 0-4 in conference play.
He probably looks like this…
You guys are aaaaalll right.
Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.
That is a flat tire father son bonding moment. Positive spinning is good for morale, but u need to be more of a realist uteswim

bowl game eligible
We’ll have a shot against Colorado in the toilet bowl if we keep losing. Man I’ve never felt so bonded with them.
by aUTmanAMi on Oct 28, 2011 3:14 PM MDT via mobile reply actions
That’s no toilet bowl. The real toilet bowl was the 2008 Apple Cup between a 0-11 UW and 0-11 WSU team that went to OT.
In other words, Go Bears!
