We Muss Protect This House

I think Utah gets up for this one, Hays has a Ratliff break-out game and we win a close one today.

Our defense has to step up and stop ASU’s run game though. That is my biggest concern.

Hays

I’m really liking Hays attitude thus far. He talks like a guy with that blue collar chip on his shoulder a lot of overlooked QBs have. I am just hopeful that translates to on the field success.

Or at a minium protecting the football and not giving it away.

I'm really concerned about how we'll do against the bottom of the Pac-12 at this point.

Unless the offense shows me something on this drive.

Seems that the strength of the bottom of the league is Offense, and while our D has been stout…they can only hold up for so long…as we’re seeing right here & vs. Wash last week.

We can’t win in a shootout, IMO.

In the grind, recovering from a turnover is hard to do...

..in the MWC, not as much

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon

by Gekko Mojo on Oct 8, 2011 5:19 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

In the "non-grind"...

…New Mexico (etc.) can’t force fumbles like a Pac-12 athlete can, so I agree.

…but if we’re turning over the ball +3 in the MWC, we’re losing there too…that’s my point.

Turnovers can be “forced”, but the also can be coached away. Urban Meyer was a genius at that. Utah players need some coaching in that dept. (Captain Obvious told me that). The emotional toll this is taking on the D is obvious. They play like 2 different units between the 1st & 2nd half the last 2 games. Look at the USC game for a better example of a complete effort from the D…and all because the TO’s were managed.

by Middy_U on Oct 8, 2011 5:32 PM MDT up reply actions

The point is, the margin is much slimmer.

In the Pac, ONE turnover can kill you against any team. 4 is suicide.

Ducks GOOOOD. Fuskies BAAAAAD.

by BigGreenWreckingMachine on Oct 8, 2011 5:47 PM MDT up reply actions

+1 The definition of playing bad? Turnovers.

Can’t play bad in this league and win. You just can’t.

by Hawnk on Oct 8, 2011 5:59 PM MDT up reply actions

You can even play a very good game and lose.

UO @ UA ‘09 was a freaking classic. UA had the game in the bag and would be in the driver’s seat for their first-ever Rose Bowl with a win. They had the lead by 7 and were driving for the capper when Foles threw deep into the endzone. The receiver got his hands on the ball, it bounced up an into the hands of our CB for the int with a shade over 3 minutes left. Ducks drive 80 yards to tie the game then win in 2OT. Arizona played a heck of a game, but eventually lost it due to a freakish chance interception.

Ducks GOOOOD. Fuskies BAAAAAD.

by BigGreenWreckingMachine on Oct 8, 2011 6:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Theres the difference right there

by Kazper on Oct 8, 2011 4:09 PM MDT reply actions

I'm sorry, but these last two games have reminded me of pre-1994 football

Where we are just outmanned and outplayed by superior teams. Even without the turnovers, I’m not sure we’d win this game.

by kadoogan on Oct 8, 2011 4:11 PM MDT reply actions

I'm sure they are, but ASU hasn't slowed down and they're playing at altitude

I’ve been impressed by their offense today. Too bad it’s coming at our expense

by kadoogan on Oct 8, 2011 4:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed, but they have a lot more depth than we do.

We could have kept up if our defense got a few minutes to breath.

by H2O_UTE on Oct 8, 2011 4:19 PM MDT up reply actions

This

They have more grade-A players than we do. Same with UW last week. We are simply in the lower half in the conference in terms of high-caliber players. And that’s why this season is going to be rough.

by kadoogan on Oct 8, 2011 4:39 PM MDT up reply actions

This team is a joke

It honestly funny to watch a team that is terrible. i feel like a raiders fan lol. I wonder if ASU can put up 20 more before its done. Next time I see Utah favored I’m putting my savings account on the line against them.

by Robo-Ute on Oct 8, 2011 4:13 PM MDT reply actions

I am a guy who always watches the whole game...

But it might behoove me as a Utah fan to only watch the first half for the rest of the year. I think we could win the rest of the games!

by notblue19 on Oct 8, 2011 4:15 PM MDT reply actions

I thought that coaching would prevent this...

I thought that the experience of this staff, plus a few guys that had a high talent level, I did not see us being 0-3 in conference. Not close. Not even with worst case scenario.

by notblue19 on Oct 8, 2011 4:20 PM MDT up reply actions

The margin of error is tremendously lower

You can’t take plays off in the Pac-12. Utah has played good for 30 minutes but then they shoot themselves in the foot and keep the defense on for too long. the grind is real but when you are beating yourself, it makes the opposing teams job that much more easy.

If I hear one more Pac-12 fan say the words “every week” I will punch someone out. YES, WE GET IT THE PAC-12 is BETTER THAN THE MWC.

Admitting it is the first step towards recovery.

Seriously though, most of us thought UU would be somewhat “down” this year, and it’s just bad luck that the first 3 conference teams you’ve faced were USC @ USC, a resurgent Washington, and P12-South favorite ASU. If it had been UCLA, Wazzu, and Arizona things might be different. Might.

No game breakers from what I've seen.

Losing Wynn has something to do with that, no doubt. But the Pac-12 is loaded with really awesome pass-catchers, and I’m not seeing any on your roster.

by Hawnk on Oct 8, 2011 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Dunn could be, if he could catch/hang on to the ball...

Christopher needs better speed, obviously, but he’s a good possession WR. Anderson & Scott could really develop during the off-season. They look good already.

Plus we have that Baylor transfer. I like our WR core tremendously in 2012.

Beating up on MWC teams, and talking about how the BCS does not give us our due than this. That is a pessimistic view, and things will get better, but I am a fan, and I live in the right now.

by notblue19 on Oct 8, 2011 4:28 PM MDT reply actions

I know you are right...

But these losses hurt. Utah was the big dog in the conference, and now they are playing with a lot of equal competition. It is like every week is BYU and TCU. (and BYU is now unlv)

TCU dominated from play 1...

We’re in every one of these games…and in reality, should have been leading at points. The TO’s should be coached up & fixed.

Where is Urban Meyer when you need him?

by Middy_U on Oct 8, 2011 4:33 PM MDT up reply actions

This isn't Chow's fault......we simply have two QB's who can't get it done.

not to mention guys who can’t catch and can’t hold on to the ball.

Look, I anticipated a 7-5 season...and we are on schedule for that.

We just got ahead of ourselves after that BYU drubbing…

If we’re not contending for the South in 2012, then I’ll be pissed.

by Middy_U on Oct 8, 2011 4:32 PM MDT reply actions

lol how the fuck are we going to get 5 more wins. Do teams ever forfeit? I’ve never seen it

by Robo-Ute on Oct 8, 2011 4:34 PM MDT up reply actions

UCLA, Oregon St., Washington St., Colorado...

I still don’t think this team is so bad that we can’t win those games. Get the turnovers under control, and we might steal one from Pitt, Cal, or Arizona.

by Middy_U on Oct 8, 2011 4:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Wazzu is still completely an unknown.

They’ve kicked FCS butt twice, lost to SDState, and beat a BAD Colorado team. Arizona is scary through the air and awful in every other respect.

You're assuming that we continue to TO the ball +3 in every game.

…so I’d agree with you if that’s the case…but I anticipate that will get fixed.

Kinda.

At one point, OrSt went from mediocre to very good at the halfway point. This year they may be going from horrible to nearly mediocre. And how can you say that about Wazzu? The one “quality” team they’ve played, they lost to, and soundly.

They pulverized South Florida. With this bad loss, I like our chances even less. They have a chip on their shoulder now.

by Middy_U on Oct 8, 2011 5:34 PM MDT up reply actions

The early start & time difference is brutal...

Oregon St. is a home game at least. Has to be 4 wins in there for this team. They look like they can hang with the 2nd tier of the Pac-12 when they’re not gift-wrapping the ball.

A hypothetical cycle....

2004 Great year, 2008 Great year, 2012? I know this is not a realistic pattern or expectation but, I am still excited to see our continued growth and pac 12 experience this year, and see what the Utes can do next year. I am still expecting this team to be competitive and get several 12 pac wins this year.

by notblue19 on Oct 8, 2011 4:37 PM MDT reply actions

Waaaaay too early for talk like that.

Then again how many of us could have predicted 2008 after the roller coaster ride of the 2007 season. This team has miles to grow.

by GambitUte on Oct 8, 2011 4:39 PM MDT up reply actions

Hypothetical, not realistic...

I agree one hundred and ten percent, but my job as a fan is too support, over react, and to dream, and i am dreaming the big dream. That being said, I am not asking for 14-0 and a national title game, but merely a team that wins these games, rather than lets them get out of hand at that fork in the road, and competes to be one of the best teams in this Pac 12.

by notblue19 on Oct 8, 2011 4:43 PM MDT up reply actions

We are competing. Just not for 60 minutes

Sure.

But did you think, with the question marks coming into this season, that it would happen this year? Due to longstanding intra-conference feuds, many of us were hoping for the Utes to win the South, but not many were especially bullish on your chances. BUT…Utah has built a program with a solid foundation of fan support. You’ve proven in the past that you can compete at the highest levels. You are going to reap the benefits of recruiting as a Pac-12 school and the rewards of the most lucrative TV rights deal in college sports history (for now). Keep up the support, your team will improve through this season, and you’ll be right there soon enough.

How is the PAC-12?

A couple things for you Utah fans. 1) The “U” belongs to Miami so maybe you should find another symbol. Maybe your QB should hold off flashing the “U” until the win not just a 1st down. 2) You are the WSU of the PAC 12 South. At this rate you won’t be bowling. Enjoy your PAC 12 experince.

There weren't as many dropped passes as it seemed...

they just came at critical times. Even with the fumbles, I think we could have won this game or at least we could have been competitive with Wynn. (No disrespect to Hays, he has great potential).

by notblue19 on Oct 8, 2011 5:03 PM MDT reply actions

We are staring down the barrel of 4 straight losses...

The measure of this team is going to be @ Cal. We “could” win there…but that will be on the coaching staff to get this team to realize its potential.

I don’t see us winning vs. Pitt though. That early start is going to be brutal.

by Middy_U on Oct 8, 2011 5:07 PM MDT reply actions

It shouldn't be too hard for you to recruit a good QB next year.

The Pac is so stacked with great QBs that top high school recruits won’t want to go somewhere just to be buried in the depth chart. At Utah they can go play immediately and that’s very attractive.

by Astrodawg on Oct 8, 2011 5:41 PM MDT reply actions

Agreed.

It’s a QB conference. Kids love that. Utah should reap the benefits. With CU and UU entering, a Loebbestal or an Osweiler might choose to go to UU rather than bide their time behind Threet and Tuel.

if we can keep a hold of the 2 we have coming in already (Hansen, Wilson)

and pick up 1 or 2 more (since 1 that’s already committed will be on a mission for 2 years) we should be in good shape at the QB position
