After the game, all I could think about is "what if"...

What if we had just let the defense win games for us after Wynn went down? What if Hays & the offense learned the JWIV formula sooner, rather than forcing Hays to pass so often in those first games after the Wynn injury?

This is a “good” team. I think we’re on track to the Vegas Bowl, where we can prove it vs. a ranked TCU…and if we do, I think at 9-4, we have a shot at getting ranked.

…but with just 1 more win, we could be talking about a possible Pac12 South crown…and I don’t think we’re that far from that good team, if only we figured it out sooner…

by Middy_U on Nov 12, 2011 9:08 PM MST reply actions

Utah probably isn't on track to the Vegas Bowl...

Unless they lose to Wazzu or Colorado. Right now, I think they’re pegged for the Holiday or Sun.

by JazzyUte on Nov 12, 2011 9:14 PM MST up reply actions

Oregon – Rose
Stanford – Alamo
ASU – Holiday
Washington – Sun
Utah – Vegas

…right?

by Middy_U on Nov 12, 2011 9:16 PM MST up reply actions

Only the Rose is a lock for a certain team...

The rest doesn’t fit to any criteria, really. It’s why Arizona played in the Alamo last year, even though they weren’t the ‘2nd’ best team in the conference.

My guess:

Rose – Oregon
Orange – Stanford (they’ll make a BCS bowl, even with one-loss, I think, especially if Bama goes to the NC)
Alamo – ASU
Holiday – Utah
Sun – Washington
Vegas – Cal

by JazzyUte on Nov 12, 2011 9:19 PM MST up reply actions

Would we jump Washington?

Likely both teams finish 8-4…UW has a soft end to the season.

Sun Bowl…bleh.

by Middy_U on Nov 12, 2011 9:22 PM MST up reply actions

I'll keep hoping for Vegas...

…but only if we get there undefeated & thanks to the Pac12 only getting 1 BCS game…

I think you’re right though, Stanford will probably go & we will end up at the Sun Bowl (I’m pretty sure Holiday will take Washington over us).

…let’s speculate…

BCS Championship – LSU/Okla St.

Fiesta – Oklahoma/Pitt (being hopeful on Pitt…prob WVU)

Rose – Oregon/Wisconsin

Sugar – Alabama/Houston

Orange – Clemson/Stanford? (could a 2 loss Big10 team get the nod over 1 loss Stanford?)

…I really hope Vegas though…short drive…we could claim we would be undefeated if we were in the MWC if we won… :-p

by Middy_U on Nov 12, 2011 9:50 PM MST up reply actions

I don't want Vegas again...

I want something new. Sun would be nice. Holiday would be better.

I’d rank ’em…

Holiday >> Sun >> Vegas

Quality of competition would be better @ Vegas Bowl...

It’s not like we’re BYU & have gone 4 straight years. I could do a repeat. Plus, we need some revenge…

Definitely prefer Holiday to all though…let’s hope Washington loses again!

I want something different too.

Nope...

Shoulda in ‘94, but we shat the bed against New Mexico and AFA (hell, we shoulda made a run at a New Year’s Bowl that year…)

by JazzyUte on Nov 13, 2011 1:44 PM MST up reply actions

The Freedom Bowl was a great game though...

Probably my 2nd favorite game I’ve attended…above the Fiesta Bowl.

by Middy_U on Nov 13, 2011 6:41 PM MST up reply actions

You gotta be kidding me

After being tied to the Vegas Bowl for eons in the MWC… and having all BYU fans taunting us with ’you’re going to the vegas bowl anyway’… you WANT to go there?

You want to go to Vegas instead of a better-paying, higher-profile, completely new bowl like the Sun?

No chance.

by TomahawkRed on Nov 13, 2011 2:52 AM MST up reply actions

Read below...I agree with all the comments.

…and for the “taunting”…beating TCU is much more likely to get us ranked over the #4 ACC school.

Not to mention that it shuts BYU fans up who think that if Nelson was the QB that they would have beaten us.

by Middy_U on Nov 13, 2011 6:43 PM MST up reply actions

Still not a good enough reason...

And I don’t think we’d beat TCU. In fact, I think it’d be a similar result to last year’s Vegas Bowl.

by JazzyUte on Nov 13, 2011 7:03 PM MST up reply actions

Really...after seeing the BYU game?

BYU puts up 28 points with a Riley Nelson led offense. Granted, I like the competitive nature that Nelson brings to their offense…but TCU ‘08-’10 wouldn’t have given up more than 10 points defensively.

They’re averaging 23.6 points against their D…and that’s with a relatively soft schedule (Sagarin has them at 55th right now, and that will go down with CSU & UNLV coming up).

Sure their offense looks good…but again, MWC. Pachall is a Soph, and I’m sure our blitz schemes would get to him, force him into mental errors.

We could grind out a win vs. them. I’m convinced of it. I had no hope we would beat Boise St. last year.

by Middy_U on Nov 13, 2011 7:29 PM MST up reply actions

I agree with Middy that TCU is vulnerable, but disagree about wanting to go to the Vegas Bowl.

The Holiday Bowl would be my first choice as it’s a game that Utah has never been to and San Diego is a beautiful destination for a late December game. The fifth choice Big-12 team will be beatable but will also garner respect.

But TCU isn’t as good as they have been. Their defense is suspect and it’s their offense that is winning them games. Whit and Sitake could put together a game plan that would get us the win.

As for what BYU fans will say, there really isn’t anything that will shut them up so lets go to the best bowl possible.

by Ute in DC on Nov 13, 2011 8:03 PM MST up reply actions

Holiday isn't going to happen unless ASU loses out...

…and as much as I hope for it, I just don’t see it happening.

My thoughts are based against either the Sun or Vegas bowl.

by Middy_U on Nov 13, 2011 8:08 PM MST up reply actions

Sure it could happen.

If both Oregon and Stanford go to BCS bowls, it’s definitely doable. After them, USC has the best overall record, but we can ignore them. Then there are 4 teams with 6–4 records.

If Utah can manage to win their final two games, 8–4 could be very appealing for the Holiday Bowl. Remember, the Holiday Bowl has the third CHOICE, not necessarily the team that is in third place in the Pac-12 standings. And if both Oregon and Stanford go to BCS bowls, then the Holiday Bowl has fourth choice after the Alamo Bowl.

The Holiday Bowl may prefer Washington or Arizona State, but only if they win their final two games. If only one of them wins out, expect that team to go to the Alamo Bowl, leaving the Holiday Bowl in play.

This is all hypothetical, of course. Utah has a chance to win out, but I’m not taking it for granted.

by Ute in DC on Nov 13, 2011 8:34 PM MST up reply actions

Completely agree.

Keep in mind that the attendance was subpar last year despite UW playing Nebraska who travels very well (possibly the best traveling fanbase in the country.)

Another factor I didn’t mention, is what happens if ASU gets blown out in the championship game. Might that make them less appealing?

by Ute in DC on Nov 13, 2011 8:48 PM MST up reply actions

Actually there is a likely AQ BCS team

Right now Houston is a guaranteed pick.

Should Houston Lose, TCU only needs to climb three spots, and since I don’t see any Big East team climbing from unranked to ahead of TCU, then it would go to TCU.

Less likely, but technically still a chance is If TCU loses out and Boise State wins out, BSU gets it.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 15, 2011 7:57 AM MST up reply actions

err... Likely non-AQ bcs team

I forgot another scenario if Southern Miss wins out, beats Houston in the C-USA championship game, climbs above TCU & above 16, and no Big East team gets ahead them, then Souther Miss would get the BCS bid.

So right now there are 4 legitimate Non-AQ teams with a BCS bid, until next week when Boise officially is eliminated.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 15, 2011 8:00 AM MST up reply actions

I think

There will be a non-AQ. Looks like Houston right now. Good for them; they have had one of the best offenses in the country for years… hopefully they can give their opponent a game. I know I’ll be rooting for them.

by Joseph Silverzweig on Nov 15, 2011 9:24 AM MST up reply actions

Won't Happen

I like Keenum, but Houston is looking like this year’s version of 2007 Hawaii. Most likely they’d get stuck in the Sugar Bowl against Alabama.

Of course, we all know what happens to Alabama in Sugar Bowls

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 15, 2011 1:04 PM MST up reply actions

Agreed...

Houston has no defense. Great offense, but I think, like the Warriors in ‘07, it’ll be held in check by a decent BCS team.

That is, of course, they go up against the BE champion…

by JazzyUte on Nov 15, 2011 1:14 PM MST up reply actions

Honestly...

… I’m not convinced they escape the next three weeks unscathed.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 15, 2011 3:22 PM MST up reply actions

They are seeing a big uptick in competition

Sagarin rankings has UCLA as their best, at 61… so no one in the top half. Next three weeks are all 20-30.

Should be fun to watch; they would struggle with Alabama, but against OU or Oklahoma State… that would be a FUN game.

UGH no Vegas Bowl

TCU goes to the Vegas Bowl unless they lose. I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t really look forward to playing the Horned Frogs in a bowl game. I think they would pound us again.

TCU isn’t as good this year last year, not by a mile, but they’re very well coached.

I lived there for 3 years while in the military. There’s nothing there and Juarez is a place to just stay away from. I’ll take Sin City or San Diego any day of the week over El Paso every time no matter how much $ lost.

By the way I think we’re all forgetting one important fact and that’s who makes the final bowl decisions. In the end of it all Utah is going to be looked at as a great rivalry for any MWC team and a draw for fans and viewers. That makes us a target for Vegas.

Regardless I’m just shocked, impressed and excited that the players stepped up and the coaches never gave up and we’ve made the 6 Ws! Amazing considering where we were just a few weeks ago.

The single season rushing record for Utah is 1507

White entered the game with 1024. He needed to average 161 per game to break it in the regular season, or 120.75 to break it with the bowl game.

33 rushes for 167 yards puts Wolfman at 1191 yards. That’s a 316 yard differences.

Needed to break in Regular Season: 158
Needed to break with Bowl Game: 105.3

Washington State entered the week as the 72nd ranked rushing defense, Colorado the 108th.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 12, 2011 9:22 PM MST up reply actions

yes but . . .

They had to play two dimensional teams to this point. Do not be surprised if both stack the box and tell hays to beat them, or if we don’t end up pounding them with defense. With our O line this year, we can’t expect every game to be a snow day run fest. Wazzu and Colorado both are cold weather teams.

by Aardvark on Nov 13, 2011 5:53 AM MST up reply actions

What and Oregon State, UCLA and Arizona didn't try that same tactic

Begging Hays to beat teams isn’t exactly a new concept. The book on the Utes has been written for many weeks. Yet they’ve managed to still get three wins. It’s not like Colorado and Wazzu get some secret that wasn’t available to OSU, UCLA, Az and Pitt.

And it’s not about whether those team can stack the box. It’ll come down to Utah not turning the ball over and giving their defense some rest.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 13, 2011 1:34 PM MST up reply actions

Utah has forced teams to respect the pass, even with Hays

That is why they continue to run the ball well. Hays isn’t a fantastic passer, but he’s good enough to force teams to respect the run, which is why White is doing so well.

You don’t have White’s numbers without a decent passing threat.

by jim2 on Nov 14, 2011 9:07 AM MST up reply actions

I think our WR's have forced teams to respect the pass

Hays isn’t a fantastic passer, but our WR’s can get behind the defense, and then it’s just a matter of putting it where they can catch it.

One thing I’ll give Hays credit for, is that since ASU’s he’s had a knack of putting it where our WR’s can get it, or an overthrow.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 14, 2011 10:07 AM MST up reply actions

A recruiting steal

Fall camp, I think a lot of people had him pegged behind Palamo and Langi. The guy has been our entire offense since Wynn went down. He just keeps getting better and stays so low to the ground to pick up those extra couple of yards. I think he’ll break the record.

by UteinBrooklyn on Nov 12, 2011 9:52 PM MST up reply actions

Agreed...possibly best JC transfer in Utah history...

…and we’ve had a lot of good ones. I can’t wait to watch him next year! He’s only getting better.

Langi looks like he could get some “beast mode” going in 2 years as well. Excited about the prospects of the 2012 season already!

If we have a healthy Wynn for the entire season with our entire receiving corps returning and White in the backfield. That could be downright scary.

Add two more

We’ll have Denham and the Josh Gordon to add some depth. I think the only loses on offense are both starting tackles.

And we get SC at home...

I’m excited for next year!

by JazzyUte on Nov 12, 2011 10:18 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

Me too.

Could be a special year depending on QB play and of course staying healthy. We do take some big hits on defense though. Most notably Shelby and Walker but also Martinez, Aiono, JJ Williams, Fotu, Black, and Finau.

That is most of our starting LBs and a lot of depth from the DL.

by UteinBrooklyn on Nov 12, 2011 10:24 PM MST up reply actions

Black has really stepped his game up...

I thought he would be the second coming of Arnold Parker…but I really like him now.

Even with losing him though, we have a good group. Mo Lee has stepped up, Lacy is a gamer, and Rowe looks great for a RS freshman. If McGill actuall pans out, this could be a top notch secondary next year.

Langi slowly starting to look good

I’ve been unimpressed in the early part of the season with Langi. It was obvious why he plummeted down the depth chart, and didn’t get many carries.

That said, his running style seems to be a bit more confident the last few games.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 12, 2011 10:28 PM MST up reply actions

There were OL issues, but a lot was on Langi

He was tentative to hit the hole, hadn’t adjusted to speed, and would make dumb running mistakes, like not paying attention to the sideline.

But the last few games, he has ran with confidence, which even in his limited carries, there has been a noticeable difference.

I haven’t really paid attention to if he’s had any chances to do blitz pickup though.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 14, 2011 7:58 AM MST up reply actions

Let him play

Langi started the season confused and unsure of himself on the few plays he did get in the game. The last two games show he’s been working and is ready to play. I love our back package with WIV, Langi and Asiata. Langi needs more game time and looks like he is going to be someone other teams hate to see week to week.

Our OL has stepped up and I’ll step up and appologize to 74 & 77 for turning their game play around. Almost penalty free and the nice pass and run blocking combo has been key to our wins.

I assume the whole SE end is theirs, right?

by Middy_U on Nov 12, 2011 10:00 PM MST up reply actions

It is...

Of course, should be pointed out that the SE corner is almost always empty because the students push forward once the game starts, kinda like at the pit at a concert – but yeah, that was only half the reason. The other half dealt with weather. It was a miserable first half.

by JazzyUte on Nov 12, 2011 10:10 PM MST up reply actions

Meh...

With weather like this, I’m surprised we had near the crowd we had. A few years ago, against a 5-4 team, we would’ve had 30,000.

by JazzyUte on Nov 12, 2011 10:07 PM MST up reply actions

A 5-4 team in the MWC isn't the same as a 5-4 Pac12 team...

…which accounts for some of the difference…but I’m sure we all recognize that.

I was disappointed in the MUSS though. Made me feel like they’re getting to be a little “fair weather”. It wasn’t that bad either. I have been to much colder games, and the snow was pretty much non-existent once the 1st Q was over.

by Middy_U on Nov 12, 2011 10:22 PM MST up reply actions

That's the problem, tho...

The snow was happening well before the game started. That deters people from going, especially students. Not cool, obviously, but it is what it is. We’re still a growing program.

Had the snow happened in the second half, we’re probably seeing more butts in the seats because they’re already at the stadium.

Fans are getting better in my opinion

I think overall the fans are getting better each week with regard to being more like a BCS level. In the past a lot of the conservativism of the state and SLC in general has carried over to our fans. They’ve always been quite calm. But lately in my seating area we seem to have more and more people standing up at more than just the key times to yell and raise hell (respectfully). In fact I was shocked at one of the home games (I think it was ASU) when the opposing players were turning and taunting the fans relentlessly and eventually it got a little ugly and the fans were throwing drinks down on the players. I don’t really condone that, but it was awesome to see our fans stand up for themselves and our team.

Last night we didn’t have a full house but we sounded good. I was disappointed in the MUSS showing their definite sign of weakness with a large chunk of no shows. The weather was actually not that cold and even if was the student section for any team is the backbone of great fan support.

One last note; the tailgating was weak too. In stead of turning the adverse conditions into something fun many decided to watch the game at home. All that does is lead to black outs on TV, so we as fans need to be there rain, snow or shine.

HAHA

Wow… I read somewhere online, that it was the first snow game UCLA has played in about 30 years. Not sure how accurate that info is.

by UteinBrooklyn on Nov 12, 2011 10:19 PM MST reply actions

Wouldn't surprise me...

ESPN’s College Football Twitter account even had a trivia question asking when the last Pac-12 snow game was.

No answer, tho.

by JazzyUte on Nov 12, 2011 10:23 PM MST up reply actions

has next years game with U$C been scheduled. i would love to get them on a snowy day.

did anybody else noticed that colorado beat zona pretty easily. the weather might turn out to be a 2 game advantage if we have the right scheduling.

Public Enemy #1 and enjoying every minute of it. Tapology. Peace.

I remember them playing amongst snow @ Wazzu just a few years ago. Maybe they mean snow actively falling from the sky.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what they meant...

This was actually the first game in a long time here that I remember it snowing this badly and sticking on the playing field during action.

Washington St just took the lead in the 3rd

Their freshman, 3rd string backup is giving me QB envy.

by UteinBrooklyn on Nov 12, 2011 10:52 PM MST reply actions

Washington St. QB

Kid already has 336 yards, 3 TDs, and 0 INTs. And there is still 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Holy mackeral

I thought you were joking.

But no. This team is surging in the south and really is bowl eligible. I left you guys for dead after getting massacred by Cal.

Their freshman QB makes next week a lot more interesting…

Could ASU lose out & we end up in the Pac12 championship?

A man can dream, right? If only we had 1 more conference win…

by Middy_U on Nov 12, 2011 11:44 PM MST up reply actions

I think that they just might.

They have their rivalry game next week with Arizona and the Wildcats would love nothing better than to ruin their hated rival’s season. They have Cal the last week of the season, and everyone knows they are capable of being a pretty good team.

by pappyman on Nov 13, 2011 12:00 AM MST up reply actions

Wassu's back is against the wall...

…in terms of bowl eligibility. That alone makes them dangerous…

However, I think this Utah team has turned the corner. They have figured out how & what they need to do to win. It may be a close game, but I suspect we will win. Let’s not let “The Grind” get us! One game at a time baby!

by Middy_U on Nov 13, 2011 12:30 AM MST up reply actions

Wow, theoretically, you guys are now still in the race for the south

Odds are long though.

IF:

Utah beats Washington St and Colorado
AND
Arizona St loses to Arizona and Cal
AND
UCLA doesn’t beat USC

Utah wins the Pac-12 South.

Unlikely but…well, shoot for the moon?

"We Believe" - Rudy Fernandez

by TheGreatMon on Nov 13, 2011 12:29 AM MST reply actions

Just looked this up...

In the event that three teams are tied, the following criteria shall be used as tiebreakers to determine who will represent the division in the championship game:

Collective head-to-head record among all tied teams
Record of the tied teams within the division
BCS component

-

So if ASU loses to Arizona, they have 2 South losses.

If UCLA beats USC, they have 2 South losses.

Utah has 2 South losses right now.

-

If BYU & Pitt win out, wouldn’t Utah have the better BCS standing? They would have 1 more win than both ASU & UCLA, plus their OOC wins look like the best of the bunch…

Multiple scenarios that get us to Eugene!

by Middy_U on Nov 13, 2011 1:23 AM MST up reply actions

BCS standings won't come into play...

In your scenario, it wouldn’t come to that.

1. Collective head-to-head: UCLA is 1-1 against Utah/ASU; Utah is 1-1 against UCLA/ASU; ASU is 1-1 against Utah/UCLA

So we move to two…

2. Division record

One point: If UCLA beats SC, they’ll win the division outright, unless they lose to Colorado, but it doesn’t matter who the Bruins lose to – either Colorado or Trojans, both will count as one loss in the division.

So UCLA beats SC and the Buffaloes, they’re in regardless of what Utah and Arizona State do.

If UCLA drops either game, they’ll have three losses in Pac-12 South play (Utah, Arizona and USC/Colorado).

That eliminates them and we go back to the head-to-head tiebreaker, which the Sun Devils own over the Utes.

So Utah needs ASU to lose out.

by JazzyUte on Nov 13, 2011 1:46 AM MST up reply actions

Exactly

Like I said.

Utah needs to win out
ASU needs to lose out (and to two teams that they definitely CAN beat)
And UCLA needs to just not pull off a miracle and beat USC.

Classy

Thank you for giving us some credit and proving to me that you guys are actually all right.

I had a preconceived notion that you had more in common with BYU fans than I had originally thought; some clown named TJ Simers from the LA Times had the audacity to write an article last night saying: “But what a belly flop, a 31-6 spanking coming from a second-rate opponent, and a reminder that nothing really has changed with UCLA football since Neuheisel’s arrival.”

by Mercury on Nov 13, 2011 10:40 AM MST up reply actions

TJ is an idiot

he just writes inflammatory remarks about everyone possible to get everyone riled up and increase his traffic.

That being said, if in his article (I didn’t and won’t read it) he calls for new leadership at UCLA – then I agree with him…but still think he’s an asshat.

I should be working right now...

by gorams77 on Nov 14, 2011 9:24 AM MST up reply actions

We despise Simers ourselves

The LA Times is a shallow propaganda mouthpiece for Southern Cal, and is a mere shadow of the paper that once featured Jim Murray. While I agree that U.C.L.A. desperately needs new leadership (see our Q&A with JazzyUte last week), Simers doesn’t get any credit for discovering that giant secret.

I saw his comment about Utah and immediately felt badly for you guys because it is patently unfair, but this is how they treat everyone except their precious trogans.

And with all due respect (which usually means you’re about to disrespect someone) to BYU fans, we have nothing in common with BYU fans.

That's what I kept telling the BSU trolls...

There are some good Bronco people that were fine. But then you had a few trolls taunting us at the end of the Vegas Bowl and I remember telling them to enjoy their obscurity and trips to Vegas or worse.

They shot back that they’d be playing in BCS bowls anyway, so it was moot. Well, no, no it’s not. BSU just found out why it sucks still being a non-BCS team: one loss kills your season.

The Broncos went from being in the NC picture (especially had they won with Stanford losing), to now hoping for the Poinsettia Bowl. Snooze!

Now look at Utah, though very, very unlikely, they’re still alive for the Rose Bowl. Imagine that.

by JazzyUte on Nov 13, 2011 1:50 PM MST up reply actions

Actually

Boise was 11th in the USA today poll. Houston was 10th. There’s a chance that computers and Harris poll voters put Boise ahead of Houston, meaning they’d still qualify for a BCS bowl.

Even if they are behind Boise, should Houston lose, Boise would get the bid.

Boise/Houston are both in possible qualifying positions two ways. Top 12, and Top 16 with a champion of an AQ conference (Big East) Below them.

by UnHoly Ram on Nov 13, 2011 4:18 PM MST up reply actions

wrong

BCS bids only go to conference winners. TCU won’t lose in the MWC this year.

Really an amazing season....

So many ups and downs, excited about every single game every week, facing incredible adversity and turning it around. This season is a testament to coach Whitt, and the program. Losing Wynn, and still having at 8-4, and long shot at Pac 12 championship game is pretty amazing. I hope every year in Pac 12 is as exciting as this one, just maybe with less bumpy roads.

You know what pisses me off

Had we took our time on the USC field goal, most likely make it. Have momentum going into OT and Kiffin would find a way to screw up and lose; we would have had a much better shot at this Pac12 South title.

Woulda coulda shoulda but just think about it, grrrrr

by PhuckthePhillies on Nov 13, 2011 9:17 PM MST reply actions

Realistically

We are looking at the Vegas Bowl. Considering that the bowl committees focus more on fan base and attendance rather than record, even if we do win out, how appealing would our traveling fan base be? Especially since we are new to the Pac, these committees may rather see a traditional pac team with a worse record with a proven traveling fan base. Although I know we would travel well (Sugar, Fiesta for example) but how “sexy” would the matchup be to the viewers. As much as I hate to say it, I can see us being passed up all the way down to the Vegas.

by PanchoUte on Nov 13, 2011 10:38 PM MST reply actions

The newness might actually work in the Utes favor

That newness, could also represent a “fresh” matchup/team. One the bowl hasn’t seen before, therefore bringing new blood.
