Tony Bergstrom, Derrick Shelby and Star Lotulelei first team All-Pac-12

Tony Bergstrom, Derrick Shelby and Star Lotulelei were named to the first team All-Pac-12 team, while John White IV and John Cullen were named to the second team.

Tony Bergstrom and Derrick Shelby are both seniors, as is Cullen, while White and Lotulelei are juniors and expected to return for a senior season next year White is expected to return for a senior season.

Utah finished its inaugural Pac-12 season with a 4-5 record, though were a win away from winning the South division and representing the division in the Pac-12 title game. They lost, in the season finale, to Colorado.

White was injured toward the beginning of the second half of their loss to the Buffaloes and did not return. He, along with Sam Brenner, who was taken off the field Saturday by ambulance, are expected to return for the bowl game.

David Shaw, the coach of Stanford, was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year, while Andrew Luck was named offensive player of the year.

Something I find Interesting

Pre-season DPOY, overhyped, dirty, and crazy Vontaze Burfict didn’t make either the first or second team.

yeah,

what in the world happened to him? did he get injured?

I hope not.

our D line is already expected to take a big hit with Finau, Aiono, and Shelby graduating. We could sure use him next year. Guess if he leaves we could always put Latu back there. And LT is a stud as well. Guess we have options………

Love the Jazz, Utes, and BoSox.

There's really been nothing concrete either way.

I would say most chatter actually has him returning.

I hope so

About Star on NFL.com... He is going to have an offer he can't refuse.

“With the 2012 defensive tackle class lacking depth, scouts are paying close attention to Utah’s Star Lotulelei*. According to an NFC South scout who recently visited Utah, the 6-3, 325-pound defensive tackle is a rare find. He’s stout against the run, capable of holding the point, while also displaying the athleticism to get after the passer. Although he still needs a little skill refinement, Lotulelei has all of the tools that scouts covet in a dominant interior defender.”

by UteinBrooklyn on Nov 28, 2011 10:37 PM MST up reply actions

he reminds me of

Haloti Ngata. I think he could dominate in a 3-4 scheme.

If he leaves, it opens up some time for LT and Big Daddy Dave Kruger, but it also hurts us depth wise.

Love the Jazz, Utes, and BoSox.

I think

He’s probably the best player on our team. Did you see what he did the one time Colorado single-teamed him? Perfect bull-rush. The guy has a motor that never stops, great technique, and excels at pressure and run-blocking.

As far as our OL goes next year

how much do you think we should expect to see of Palelei??

has he been getting into good shape and getting back into the flow of things? would be a shame to see such a big guy go to waste.

What a total joke!

John White to the 2nd Team?

Highway robbery.

by TomahawkRed on Nov 28, 2011 4:34 PM MST reply actions

If Polk leaves

You’ll have the best back in the Pac next year. And I’m biased, but Polk had to face the defenses of Nebraska, Stanford, and Oregon, all really good and went for 130, 144, and 80. That is why he got first team.

by Skeptical Dawg on Nov 28, 2011 5:10 PM MST up reply actions

polk also destroyed our defense

Dawgs had more weapons

True. Polk did face some good defenses, but at least the Huskies had a good QB and other viable weapons to keep opponents somewhat honest on defense.

Juan Blanco Quatro did not have that same benefit for the bulk of the season. He was option A, B, C and D on offense. After Wynn went down everyone knew that White was going to get the ball. Coach Chow had to be VERY creative in his schemes to disguise the run and hide our D-III QB.

By that contrast and comparison alone I think the nod should’ve gone to White.

by kailuakid9er on Nov 29, 2011 10:35 AM MST up reply actions

I agree

Coming in to Friday he was the league’s leading rusher and had most scores on the ground. He was the reason Utah won any conference games. That’s messed up. John White should have made 1st team. That pisses me off. Pisses me right off.

by Classless Ute on Nov 28, 2011 5:17 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

2nd team all PAC is an honor

White lost out on 1st team because he had three conference games rushing under 40 yards and 5 under 100. That is 5 out of 9 coaches that shut him down. Two others even didn’t play against him.

Polk has slightly lower averages 117 YPG VS 111.8 YPG
And 14 rushing TDs VS 11. Polk had two more receiving TDs than White, so again it’s virtually a push. They’re going to vote for the guy they know.

by UteinBrooklyn on Nov 28, 2011 10:24 PM MST up reply actions

honor/slight

I’ll repeat my comment above…

Agree

What was so amazing about White was that everyone KNEW he was going to rush 35 times a game.

by Joseph Silverzweig on Nov 29, 2011 12:02 PM MST up reply actions

True, but that also means Polk didn’t get as many touches. White had 290 to Polk’s 263, also Polk had 29 receptions for 324 yards and 4 TDs to White’s 12 for 47 yards and 2 TDs. Also, Utah has a better O-line than UW’s which was mediocre to bad this year.

Plus, going on UteinBrooklyn’s point, Polk was never held under 100 yards total offense except against USC where he only got 9 carries, so can’t blame him on that one.

by Skeptical Dawg on Nov 29, 2011 9:04 PM MST up reply actions

Not sure I'd agree with you on the OL.

Our OL was downright horrible at points this year. Sometimes they played well, but on the average they were just mediocre as well.

Coaches' Votes

For an award voted on by the coaches of the conference what’s going to matter first and foremost is consistently having game changing performances against conference opponents. In conference play White doesn’t separate himself from the other top backs. He was pretty much feast or famine, with huge games against the worst defenses in the conference and average to mediocre performances against the better teams.

white IV didnt get first team?

are u serious, he is ranked #8 just behind oregon’s running back… And Cullen with White? yeah right. Hmm.. pisses me off too, just like last Friday.

I CANT BELIEVE WE LOST TO FUCKING COLORADO.. RUINED EVERYTHING FOR THIS YEAR.. THERE BETTER BE SOME GOD DAMN PRESSURE UNDER WHIT.

It just makes me sad, that even though we shouldn’t have been close to that position, just one fucking made field goal could have won the game.. who the hell misses 3?

damn i’m fired up i apologize for the vulgarity.

White will be back - With a better QB to work with

And at the rate he improved this year, you can expect him to be in the running again next year.

Marquess Wilson was also 2nd team

even though he led the pac-12 in receiving

by utahmanami on Nov 28, 2011 8:47 PM MST reply actions

The sad part is that he could have been.

A little tiny bit of self-control and willingness to work hard and he’d be in the NFL right now.

Also off topic

Does anyone play college fantasy football? I had a monster season 12-1 and league champion

Final roster looked like this
QB- Andrew Luck
RB- Montee Ball
RB- Chris Polk
WR- Juron Criner
WR- Marqise Lee
WR- Kendall Wright
Te- Coby Fleener
K- Coleman Petersen
Def- Wisconsin

and then my bench is nobodies for the most part except Utah’s D

Congrats to the Utes making the All PAC teams.

Two out of four DL players were Utes. Both offensive tackles made the 1st or 2nd team. Nice work. Now it’s time to get some skill players on that list in addition to the big boys.

by UteinBrooklyn on Nov 28, 2011 10:28 PM MST reply actions

Lets not forget the players getting honorable mentions either

UTAH: ST Greg Bird, Sr.; DB Conroy Black, Sr.; LB Brian Blechen, So.; DB Ryan Lacy, Jr.; PK Coleman Petersen, Jr.; LB Chaz Walker, Sr.;

Congrats to all the guys mentioned. A very good start for the future.

I'm surprised it's Lacy and not Lee in the honorable mention DB category.

I guess Lacy is more consistent, but Lee seems to come up with the big play more often. Lee has 3 picks this year including 2 against WSU to basically seal the game for us. Lacy has 2, one good one against USC.

Still, I’m glad to have both of them next year. Will make losing Conroy a little easier.

by displacedute on Nov 29, 2011 11:28 AM MST up reply actions

Lacy had the better overall season

Lee has the better ending. That is until he was a freaking idiotic moron and decided to throw a punch in front of the referee after we had stopped Colorado on 3rd down, and set the tone for the entire day.

Miller had some good comments this afternoon

Thought JB4 had as much right to be 1st team as Polk, also stated biggest miss on the list was Blechen, should have been at least 2nd team.

This is a fair guy that treats us as a full member of the conference and pretty much always has. Unlike some of the media on the coast. Cough, Cough, Wilner, Cough.

by U of Uman on Nov 29, 2011 6:19 PM MST reply actions

The problem with Blechen is that he played two positions

He was no doubt a leader and play maker but the fact he split time at linebacker and safety hurt his chances.

by GambitUte on Nov 30, 2011 7:46 AM MST up reply actions

They list him as Linebacker

I think that he was much better as a Safety this year. Maybe that would have made a difference

by WesTravelingEast on Nov 30, 2011 10:55 AM MST up reply actions

I like him infinitly more at LB

He’s not as fast as an ideal safety, and him not being at LB is why we got beat at the short pass so often. I also like his closer proximity to the QB at LB and that he can be less transparent when he is called upon to blitz.

He will be back at LB next season. I am 99% sure.

by jim2 on Nov 30, 2011 11:06 AM MST up reply actions

Only reason

He went back to being a safety was because of injuries. He’ll probably put on more weight in the off-season and be even better suited to the LB position.

by Joseph Silverzweig on Nov 30, 2011 11:45 AM MST up reply actions

I agree, I like Blechen as a LB and he'll be back there next year for a couple of reasons.

The first reason is that we lose more LBs than DBs. Next year’s LB and DB crew look like this:

LB:
Losses: Martinez (starter, 71 solo, 103 asst tackles career), Walker (starter, 93/153), Williams (top backup, 51/47), Fotu (unfortunate injury kid who should have been a monster).
1- Reilly, JR, starting this year as a LB/DE hybrid. 34 solo tackles, 14 for loss.
2- Hale, SO, backing up OLB behind Martinez, has 5 tackles, 1 for loss.
3- Fehoko, SO, backing up Walker, 1 tackle.
4- Fagerin, JR, backing up Reilly, 3 tackles, 1 for loss.
Behind those five are Norris (FR), Spikes (JR), Anderson (SR).

DB:
Losses: Black (starting CB, 33/21/5 picks/7 PBU), Bird (backup, ST monster)

CB:
1/2- Lacy and Lee will be #1 and #2, both will be Seniors, both are starting this year on occasion, Lacy has 36 tackles and 8 breakups, Lee has 14/4.
3- Johnson, SO, backing up Black, has 6 tackles.
4- Topps, SR, backing up Lacy at Nickle, has 21/4.
Behind those four are L. Walker (SR), Bryant (FR), Smith (FR), Freeman (SO), and incoming recruits Justin Thomas and Austin Lee, plus some other possible recruits still on the radar.

Safety:
1- McGill, JR/SR (depending on med RS), 6 tackles, 1 PBU.
2- Rowe, SO, 23/6
3- M. Walker, JR, 9 tackles, 1 for loss.
4- Chappuis, JR, 10 tackles
Behind those 4 are Honeycutt (JR), Morris-Edwards (SO), Reese (SO).

The place we need him most is LB, not safety where we have McGill and Rowe and Topps.

Everyone hates a pink-shirt-wearing communist.
