New era of Utah basketball kicks off tonight

Utah basketball will host Adams State tonight in an exhibition game and no, it's not the school from Revenge of the Nerds, that was Adams College - not state. Apparently, Adams State is located in Colorado and not the fictitious state of Adams, which I'd like to pretend was named after President John Adams.

It marks the official first game of the Larry Krystkowiak era, though since it's only an exhibition game, it won't count in the standings.

Regardless, it could give us an idea of what to maybe expect from this year's team, as the Utes struggled to put away the Grizzlies in last year's exhibition game at the Huntsman Center, a ten point Utah win.

Of course, this is almost an entirely new roster than what we saw during last year's losing season and because of this, not much is expected of this year's Runnin' Utes - they were picked to finish a distant last in the Pac-12.

With all that uncertainty, hopefully the team can surprise this year.

Player turnover

I say better to have a brand new team than the same team that barely won 13 games last year.

I would have loved to see

what last year’s team could have done if the main guys had stayed together. I mean, you dump Glover, Kupets, and a couple others but retain Clyburn and Obrien, and this year’s team would be vastly improved IMO.

Starting lineup announced:

Point-Jiggy (no surprise there)
Wings-Cedric Martin and Dijon Farr (these two had been rumored to be pulling away from the pac)
Center-David Foster (again, a shocker)
Forward-Blake Wilkinson (surprising pick, seeing as how he is a freshman walk on, saw him play in high school, he is pretty good).

Hopefully, this team can rebound and battle. Tonight should be interesting…….

I like it.

From my comment on Jazzy’s post “Guess the Ute” after watching the Red/White game:

“Wilkinson is the home grown kid we’ve needed on the team the last few years. He’s good enough to see SOME time on the floor and physical enough to provide a spark.”

I didn’t think that they’d he’d get a lot of minutes, but I love that they are starting this kid. He’s a hard worker and physical. I’ve always felt that if our guys play hard, I’m not too worried about the record. Mostly because in college, with a little talent, hard work and play will get some Ws.

Jiggy is a good player.

If Foster can become an offensive threat, we can be a decent team. Until then though, The Adams St’s will be a challenge.

Since U of A got beat by a D-2 school

I wouldn’t take Booger’s, Wormser’s, and Lewis Skullnick’s alma mater – the Atoms for granted.

Still some problems

While I didnt get to see most of the game, there were some stats that did stand out for me.

1. Out assist to turnover ratio was bad! 12-19, If this team can take strides to lower the turnovers to around 10 we can start to think about winning games.

2. 16 Steals against us! Come on Utes, we cant do that and expect to win.

3. Ball Movement. Only 12 assists, to me, screams that we are not moving the ball around and making the defense work but running and shifting around and really just moving. I didn’t see the game but I would imagine its a lot of unnecessary dribbling and 1 on 1 play. Maybe a bit of ball screens but when you move the ball around good things happen and assists start to pile up.

4.Free throws. We shot 61% from the line14-23. We have be be able to get to the line and make those shots considering we are rebuilding.

Overall its the first game and I may be a bit harsh on the team. But I really believe if that can keep these stats in check we can actually see good basketball and be in games.

just my opinion, what do you guys think?

awful loss

stinks to lose on a blown timeout call.

And the free throws are pitiful. I can excuse the turnovers a little because we are still getting used to each other, but I can’t excuse that many missed free throws. Awful.

But I did see some things that I really liked. I liked how we penetrated so much. Our guys were getting to the basket. And that is something I haven’t seen in a long time up on the hill. Our three point shooting was ok, but nothing to write home about.

Washburn was obviously gased at the end.

I like our talent, though its young, I think we have some nice building blocks going forward.

I sure hope Foster is ok……….

one more thing

Did anyone notice how in the first half, any time we got a lead or tied it, they answered? We gotta get more of a killer instinct. We gotta bury teams like this. Make them quit, and we didn’t. We have no business losing to Adams State. But I think that will come with time.

I'll trust your and others assessments about playing hard

But tinkering or not, we shouldn’t be losing to a D-II school.

I would like to see a box score so I can see the shooting percentages. However, I am guessing like usual, we are again a poor shooting team. 61% from the line is terrible and inexcusable. Shooting free throws is fundamental basketball. Why can’t we recruit 2 or 3 slower players, but who can shoot.
