WE MOVE TO WHITCON 3 - Whittingham to ASU?

Though it would seem highly unlikely, FOX Sports Arizona is reporting there is mutual interest between the Arizona St. Sun Devils and Utah's current head coach Kyle Whittingham.

It's hard to imagine Whittingham would leave his cushioned job for a Sun Devils program that hasn't been really relevant in football since the mid-90s...but you never know.

Because of this report, and the fact there hasn't been any indication out of Salt Lake that it's false, for the moment, we're moving to WHITCON 3.

We'll keep you posted.

Fuck

This is all I need to read on a Saturday morning. Jazzy has officially made me cranky.

Go Cuse. Go Utes. Go Kings (hockey version). Go Panthers (hockey version). Go Marlins. Go Dodgers. I despise the NFL and NBA, so don't bore me.

You're in the first stage of grief...

Denial!

Na'...I don't think he'll take the job...

If there is any interest, it’s just to get a better deal from Utah.

You probably have more insider info

But, these things seem to always be a case of “where there’s smoke there’s fire”. ASU can pay more. And Chris Hill has some difficulty with popular/performing head coaches. I don’t know, you’re probably right Jazzy, but shit seems to happen to the Utes.

How is this anything more than a lateral move?

…and how can you be sure that ASU can pay more? I see no reason Utah can’t come within .5 mil, if not match. Utah has boosters & a lot more money coming into the program via Pac12 bowls & TV contracts.

I don’t buy the “more money” angle.

by Middy_U on Dec 10, 2011 2:04 PM MST up reply actions

ASU can pay more than what Whittingham is making, but not much...

And Utah can bump Whitt’s salary by that to keep him here – maybe more. We’ll see.

by JazzyUte on Dec 10, 2011 2:36 PM MST up reply actions

Whit was making more than Erickson.

Now that Washington State and Arizona have upped the ante though, ASU might be trying to cripple a division opponent (Utah) from within. ASU might be an easier place to recruit from So Cal and Texas but don’t see this potential move as anything but linear.

by UteinBrooklyn on Dec 10, 2011 4:17 PM MST up reply actions

Don't know where you get that

ASU was ready to pay Sumlin 2.5 million dollars to come to ASU so I don’t know where you get that information.

Here...
ASU President Michael Crow failed to factor in the “Nick Saban Effect” on college football coaching salaries, and asked the Board of Regents to budget only $2 million a year for the hire.

OK....in case this is true

What’s our backup plan? It’s after we go through denial, anger, depression, bargaining and acceptance.

HE WON'T

For the same reason Peterson Won’t leave Bosie State. If he has 2-3 sub par years at ASU he’s fired. If he has the same at Utah he’s fine. I’m sure Utah will be willing to pony up and give him whatever money ASU would offer him.

by HaloUte on Dec 10, 2011 12:28 PM MST reply actions

I don't think you're right

These aren’t the days of the MWC. If he has 2-3 subpar years at Utah, he’s a gone. The Pac12 is too competitive, and because of the money situation, if you get stuck at the bottom, you’re stuck for a long time.

As for Peterson, I think he knows he’s a big fish at Boise State. The movie to the Big East, whatever we say about the league, guarantees at least two years of AQ. And Boise is going to run that conference for two years. Better to be a big fish in a small pond than a little fish in a big pond. In a couple of years, especially with that East Coast Bias showcasing Boise, he can name his price at THE top school in the country.

Of course move...not movie

Boise loses 25 seniors from this team

Boise won’t win the Big East next year, mark my word. They are losing all of their studs from the past two years: Moore, Martin, Wynn, Potter, Hout, Shoemaker. They may not win 9 games.

by UteinBrooklyn on Dec 10, 2011 4:10 PM MST up reply actions

That would make it difficult to win the Big East next year.

(And yes, you are correct, they are not due to move until 2013, but it’s possible that could change.)

by Ute in DC on Dec 10, 2011 4:35 PM MST up reply actions

hmm not sure

I thought it was going to be next year. Their logo is on the Big East’s web page I looked at their tentative OOC schedule for next year and it had Michigan State, BYU, So. Miss, and someone else I can’t remember. I think They are going to struggle though.

Some things just aren't done....

Unwritten rules or whatev’s.

You simply don’t poach a head coach from another conference school. Most particularly from the same division. It would be a disaster. Whittingham knows better.

by Hawnk on Dec 10, 2011 12:51 PM MST reply actions

Agreed...

Kyle said that himself about some of his assistance potentially taking positions at MWC schools a few years back. You just don’t make a move like that, and Whit knows it…

by BetterasIgetolder on Dec 10, 2011 2:31 PM MST up reply actions

Don't worry

There is absolutely no incentive for Whitt to leave for ASU.

Same conference, same division… worse team. Translation: a lot of effort to get that program to the point Utah is already at. It makes no sense. He won’t do it. Don’t care if they’re offering more money. Whitt has said in the past that’s not what’s most important to him.

I don't read the script. The script reads me.

That Fox Sports AZ report was garbage.

The entire page was just Whit’s resume except for one paragraph. ONE. In which an unnamed source indicated there is mutual interest. That is what everyone is scared about????

Oh and that another unnamed source said Whit’s Ideal job is ASU or a California school. HAHA

Craig Morgan needs to attribute his quotes or they may as well be from his 14-year-old girlfriend, who was made known to me by a close source.

by UteinBrooklyn on Dec 10, 2011 4:32 PM MST reply actions

Ok...

Clearly, We don’t want Whit to leave but if he did I don’t think it would be the end of Utah football as we know it. If a guy like Gary Anderson (and that seems like a very logical and good fit) came in I would have full confidence in his as our coach. I just don’t think Whit is the only person who can have success at Utah.

by HaloUte on Dec 10, 2011 10:04 PM MST reply actions

Hmmm...

I’m not sure I buy it. Mainly because of Washington’s offer to him a few years ago. At that point, Utah was still in the Mtn West, Washington could pay more, Washington was (and is) a more storied program, and Washington had been playing poorly for fewer years than Az State has now. He turned that down, and stayed with Utah. Why then, would he now accept an offer to move to Az State where he might make more money than here, where he would be in a tougher spot for rebuilding, where he’d probably have a tougher job recruiting (Utah has been to and won 2 BCS games. ASU? 0), and where he’d lose that suuuper lucrative UA deal he’s had for the past few years (which is where he makes a large portion of his money)? It doesn’t make all that much sense on its own, but when you compare/contrast it to the Washington offer a few years back any potential sense it might have had sort of fades away. I could always be wrong, but it just doesn’t make sense to me. Unless he family is desperate to get away from Utah winters. That’s possible.
