Utes to drop Drum & Feather - Sun Bowl the last game logo will appear on helmet

There had been rumors circulating the last week about the possibility that the Drum & Feather logo - which has been a staple for University of Utah athletics since the 1970s - would be dropped prior to the 2012 season.

KSL has confirmed those reports.

The Drum & Feather logo will be no more - officially being phased out after Utah's bowl game tomorrow.

Replacing the logo will be either interlocking Us or the traditional, more historic Block U - which has been associated with the University for over 100 years.

The Drum & Feather, as I mentioned, was brought into the program back in the 1970s and was a near-copy of the Washington Redskins logo of the time. It's not a surprise, as over the years, the athletic department had moved away from the logo - replacing it on the field at RES, at mid-court at the Huntsman Center and on a great deal of athletic gear sold recently.

But it is a big development and could suggest the program might be moving toward dropping the Utes name altogether.

For now, though, the Drum & Feather is the only thing going.

Noooo!

I love the drum and feather logo. I don’t just want to share our logo with espn u. This is sad news

Bummer

But if the tribe objected than I understand. I think the interlocking U’s would be pretty cool on the helmet.

Oh, hell to the no!

This is so unbelievably lame…..why replace our logo with a something so boring and unoriginal. Petition?

by tpb125 on Dec 30, 2011 3:37 PM MST reply actions

That makes a grand total of 2 teams in all of sports

One of which hasn’t used the logo for sometime, I’d call that original…..now how many teams use a block letter or interlocking ones?

by tpb125 on Dec 30, 2011 3:47 PM MST up reply actions

How many run the risk of losing their name for offending the group they're named after?

If Utah drops the D&F, it’s because the Ute tribe told them to.

It’s not outside pressure from the Pac-12 or Chris Hill playing PC Police. This has been a move coming for a while now. The tribe has had issues with the logo because of its native symbolism (feather & war drum) and to help appease them, the athletic department has even gone as far as calling it the ‘circle & feather’ instead because of the issues there.

So, if they’ve shown displeasure with the logo, and want a change, we have no choice.

Or we’ll lose the name altogether.

by JazzyUte on Dec 30, 2011 3:51 PM MST up reply actions

If that's the case......

I can understand that. Though every time someone asks, “What’s a Ute?” It strengthens their history.

by tpb125 on Dec 30, 2011 3:58 PM MST up reply actions

Seriously though.....

Are you hearing that the Ute tribe is now unhappy with the logo thus causing change?

by tpb125 on Dec 30, 2011 4:06 PM MST up reply actions

I've heard that for years now...

I don’t know for a fact it’s the reason, but yeah, I’ve heard they’ve not been too open to the logo for a while now.

But I don’t know for sure. We’ll find out, though.

by JazzyUte on Dec 30, 2011 4:08 PM MST up reply actions

How so?

If anyone’s been paying attention to Utah athletics the last 10 years, they would’ve seen this day coming.

Back in the early 00s, the logo was completely removed from the floor of the Huntsman Center.

The logo hasn’t been on the field at RES since at least ’04 – it was used in the end zone back during the first few seasons of the stadium, but gone by the time the Meyer era rolled around.

When they added the Us to the press box, it was the Block U and not the Drum & Feather (that was back in ’06).

More and more apparel has either Swoop or the Block U on it as opposed to the D&F.

The athletic department has, for the last few years, been calling it the ‘circle & feather’ instead of drum & feather.

All this happened LONG before the Pac-12 offered an invite.

From what I’ve heard, and this goes back years, the Ute tribe has increasingly become displeased with the logo because of its Native symbolism (war drum & feather). The athletic department wants to continue a good relationship with the tribe and this might be the only way to do that.

It’s not the Pac-12, from what I’ve heard. If the Pac-12 were demanding a change, they would demand TOTAL change – not just the logo. That means they would tell Utah to change its name from the Utes to something else. That’s not the case.

This has been an issue between the athletic department and the Ute tribe for quite some time. So, I’m guessing, if this move is done, it’s to appease the tribe and not the Pac-12.

by JazzyUte on Dec 30, 2011 7:32 PM MST up reply actions

No they wouldn't, they'd "demand" a gradual, and scheduled, phase out/in period.

Besides, oh King of the Redundant Paragraphs, I didn’t say this is all on the Pac12, but, considering how P.C. of a conference it is, it isn’t a stretch to wonder if there was some added pressure coming from that direction.

You don't need to be an ass...

Keep it up and I’ll politely ask you to leave so you won’t have to read my redundant paragraphs.

Bottom line, hearing what I’ve been hearing since at least ‘05, this is not a surprise and has little, if anything, to do with conference affiliation. This move would’ve come even if the Utes were still in the Mountain West.

Which is Exhibit A for the argument that it doesn’t matter where it came from, the Green Bay logo is as classic as Georgia’s. Utah’s is substantially different from the Redskins and it’s become a classic.

Excluded as a Utah Ute Fan

So as the Utes entered the PAC-12, the University of Utah asks fans to join or increase crimson club donations, to support the increase in ticket prices, to support our athletics in both home and away attendance, and all this in a very trying economy. Many of us have done that. I certainly did in all categories.

What frustrates me is they want increased support from fans and alumni, but have they done anything to include them in this decision? We bleed Utah crimson red, yet the athletic department continues to make decisions without any fan or even fee paying student input. Just keep excluding and alienating the fans, and see where that gets you. Go UTES !

I don't have a problem with this.

Living in Redskin country, I see the logo Jazzy posted up above quite often actually. Usually as a metal badge on the back of cars. At first I thought I was finding fellow Utes, but upon closer inspection they are all ‘Skins fans. I would rather have the school use an emblem that is uniquely ours. Unfortunately our block U has been appropriated by the World Wide Leader. So I would like them to use the interlocking U’s. Maybe I am in the minority on this, but I like how they looked on my Utah license plates back when I lived in SLC.

Losing the Utes name may bother me more. That decision should be up to the Ute tribe, and if they don’t want us to use it that is fine. But if we change it to the Red Tailed Hawks, I’ll be pissed. That is a lame ass name. (but I will admit Swoop is good for the kids)

This blows!

I’m almost on board with BetterasIgetolder on this. If the only friggin’ thing that associates Utah to the Utes is the nickname – then scrap it. The logo won’t reflect anything Indian, er, Native American and Swoop as a mascot is such a stretch that it’s ridiculous.

Why not just call ourselves the Block U’s. and for our mascot we have someone run around in square foam suit with the block U on it. Then we can save on the couple of scholarships that we give to the Ute tribe as part of the compensation for use of their name.

Lets not stop there!

Let’s get rid of the MUSS, and charge more for those seats. Students can pay for standing room only! Also due to the success of the blackout, let’s get rid of the crimson, and just go with black. Oh, and Utah man? Talk about outdated! Let’s scrap it and find something new and edgy. Who needs tradition, because if you like the product you have supported, then you will definitely like something completey different.

by notblue19 on Dec 30, 2011 6:58 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

Why do they have to unass the drum/hoop/circle along with the feather?

The only thing about the logo that can be construed as remotely “injun” are the feathers. Just drop those and keep the encircled block U. Seems like a fair compromise.

As an aside, I hope we never use the “Ute” name. It’s unique and fitting considering the state derives its name from “Ute”. Shit, technically, Utah could claim that “Ute” is just slang for “Utahn”. If it has to go, however, I sure hope the school grows some balls and comes up with something equally unique. “Red Hawks” is almost as shitty “Cougars”.

Slippery Slope

“Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything.” If the logo goes, the name won’t be far behind.

by BCS Busted on Dec 30, 2011 7:21 PM MST up reply actions

Well maybe...

But if the logo stays, the name is almost certainly gone and we have an ugly PR mess on our hand (not that this is great by any means, but yeah).

I don’t think Dr. Hill is doing this just to be his PC self and I doubt the Pac-12 is demanding Utah change its logo – yet will allow them to keep the name ‘Utes’. This has been brewing for a while now and I’ve heard, long before today, that the Ute tribe had some reservations (no pun intended!) about the logo.

That’s always been a sticky issue. So much so, in fact, that the athletic department officially calls it the ‘circle and feather’.

It’s likely, though I guess this is all speculation on my part, that if the athletic department kept the logo, the Ute tribe would rescind its endorsement and then the name is most definitely forced to change.

It’s possible, though I know a lot of people think this means we’re going to lose the name, they stay the Utes and remain the Utes for years to come – with a logo that isn’t directly tied to a certain tribe or American Indians.

Illinois did something similar with the Illini.

They used to have Chief Illiniwek as a prominent logo, but in ’07, retired him because of potential sensitivity issues.

Utah had a live American Indian mascot for years, but dropped it in the early 90s, I believe, at the behest of the Ute tribe.

We did “invent” the Thursday night ESPN game. Our Athletic Director, Homer Rice, mentioned to ESPN that NC State and GT could provide better ratings than Drunk Tractor Pulls on a Thursday night. I was there for the first one, and Friday mornings have never been the same.

“Up with the White and Gold
Down with the Red and Black
Georgia Tech is out for a victory
We’ll drop the battle axe on Georgia’s head
When we meet ‘em our team is sure to beat ’em
Down on John Heisman’s (or Paul Johnson’s) field there’ll be no sound
as our Bow Wows rip through the air
When the battle is over the Bulldogs will be found
With the Yellow Jackets swarmin’ round, hey!”

Chant:

Cheerleaders: Go Jackets
Students/Alums:(bust their ass)
Repeat twice more…

Cheerleaders:Fight, Win! Students/Alums (drink, get naked)!

Long time reader, First comment.

Born and raised in Utah, my family taught me some good, and grew me up as a Ute fan. The discussion of the University changing the “name” or “mascot” has always been a rumor. Nothing new.

Sure you can call the current logo unoriginal, uninspired or plagiarized material. But something has always caught my attention, never has anyone representing the Ute tribe stood up and protested the name or logo. Until I see a real member of the tribe speaking against the use of the drum and feather logo, and/or name. Why change it?

So you want to stand out against the crowd? It’s UTAH! Who cares what Miami(FL) has to say, they are irrelevant now. Why stop there, …change the logo, …change the name. Then have Under Armor do Utah’s jerseys like they did Maryland. Ugly right? I mean come on, it’s UTAH!

I WILL never stand for a name change.

Hope anyone and everyone reading this will see the same way that I do.
Not saying the Utes are a racist name or what have you, but there are some bad derogatory terms out there in the sports world that are still accepted.

Redskins being the most egregious.

Many Native Americans fought Washington Redskins comparing it to:

The Atlanta “N words”
The Brooklyn Kikes
The Chicago Pollaks

If the team/University is respectful of: Sioux, Seminoles, Blackhawks, etc, the use of the name is positive to the tribe. I go further that Braves is also OK.

For an outsider (first time listener, long time caller), Utes seems to be respectful.

I hope y’all don’t get run over like St. johns and ’Cuse, and fold to special interest pressure just so they get a feather (ha) for taking you down.

Could KSL wrong?

When I posted this story, KSL didn’t have the entire story up. It was just that sources told them the D&F would be dropped.

However, I re-checked their article and they’ve added this:

However, several other bloggers with knowledge of discussions have sources confirming the logo is likely to go away.

Bloggers? Who? Not me. I never indicated it was going away – Twitter? UFN? That’s fishy.

Thanks a lot for ruining my day, KSL. Bastards….

As an outsider,

I see a suspicious and cloaked religious link to this controversy. Something like Touchdown Jesus using the Vatican to screw with Fordham and Gonzaga through the nefarious offices of Opus Dei and a French Police Inspector.

Any suspects in your part of the world? Who runs the State Legislature?

Maybe I’m over stretching and it’s just the PAC 12’s PC Police embarrassed by the potential of Native American agitation outside of Conference games on TV.

Can we PLEASE just copy this with our colors?

…and of course, have “UTAH” across the chest in our block font

I'm sure Phil Knight and Oregon

have a rejected Duck’s phantasmagoric Uni with Diamond Tread, Feathers (oops, too controversial), a heavy link bondage Chain, and they can weave some mountains into the fabric, for sale, Cheap.

Or you could go for the Under Armour Maryland helmets, or as my wife pointed out, “it looks like a Taxi ran into an Ambulance”.

It’s amazing how much top recruits are swayed by Swaggy Unis. Penn State’s got no chance with the classic Blue/White get-up now that there will be a new Bravo show, “Football Runway” with Heidi “Tight End!” Klum.

University of North Dakota

has to change theirs. (They are the Fighting Sioux) I think they should change their logo to a lawyer with a headdress and a briefcase. (Fighting “Sue”)

Here's another reason not to lose the Drum & Feather

People outside of Utah don’t know what a Ute is! Read this post from a Georgia fan on the Sun Bowl win by the Utes (and we think we’re the only rivalry that is toxic?)

As a staunch Dawg fan I seldom post here. Right now I am as mad as Hell! Lose to Utah? With a HUGE fourth quarter advantage? On a third and almost 10 run? In OT? To a damn Yankee team? Man that hurts! Was hoping for Yellow Jacket win because I still believe coach is better than Saint Mark Richt. At least I did! I am totally pi$$ed along with the rest of the Tech nation. There was absolutely NO excuse for this coillapse. Against the Dawgs? Maybe. Against the Utes? Hell no! What is a damn Ute anyway? Happy New Year all.

Without Atlanta?

Georgia would be Alabama East.

Possible name change as well

It’s just speculative, but the Tribune thinks we could be dropping “Utes” as well.

I don’t really care, but if we become the hawks, red tailed hawks, or anything pertaining to swoop, that will be dumb.

just me

I for one am okay with the Change… With the Way College football has gone with all the new uniforms and specialty logo’s I am okay with the Idea. Look at ASU the Lost Sparky got New digs and are going to have one of there Best Recruiting Classes ever.. Kids like new and flashy… Under Armour has been begging to compete with Nike and Oregon and Utah is that Chance.

by AZ UTAH FAN on Jan 1, 2012 12:28 PM MST reply actions

who gives a shit if some kids like new and flashy right now

that will fade with time and then we’ll be left without another tradition and just be sellouts.

agreed...Go Big Or Go Home

I say if the logo and “Utes” disapear, then go all the way like ASU and Oregon, well maybe Oregon has gone too far. Imagine the scenes in Heartbreak Ridge where the marine platoon struggles to matching the pt gear worn by Gunny Highway. We could struggle with what to wear to match the team. I’m watching the Rose Bowl and am liking the chrome duck helmets. Michigan State’s alternate uniform was awesome this year.

As far as being a sellout, we will be viewed that way for loosing the drum and feather and Ute mascot.
