Jiggy Watkins suspended indefinitely
More bad news for the Utah basketball team. Jiggy Watkins has been suspended from the team indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.
It's not clear what that conduct was.
Another blow for the basketball team and more indication they'll be anything but competitive this season.

Conduct Detrimental to the Team....
…. Eating a ton of food, not working out, and Jiggling more than a bowl of Jello.
see............
you, the des news, and ksl have reported that this is “bad news” for the team. I don’t understand how this is bad news. What does Jiggy bring to the team that we will miss? What? We will get blown out by 40 to Fresno, instead of 30?
In my mind, this is great news. Jiggy is a fat slob who has buyer’s remorse over the fact that he stayed and didn’t transfer and has already mailed it in. Good riddance suspend him for the year. This gives more time to develop guys who have a chance to grow to become contributors one day. Odunsi, Storey, and Hines will all benefit from this.
Seriously. this is good news people.

I don't really see it as good news...
Considering he was one of only a handful of players doing anything out there. Take him out and we could be making history in terms of awful losses.
and what do you call
losing by 30 to fresno with him?
you will see better ball movement, fewer turnovers, and more people contributing. I guarantee it. and even if we lose badly the rest of the way………are we really doing anything with him?
In my mind, if we are getting blown out and steamrolled either way, why play the out of shape loafer when you can get the young guys experience? This is definately a good thing.

could happen
but to me, if we are going to get blown out either way, id rather have the young guys get real game experience.

Completely agree...
I can’t stand Jiggy. He does nothing more than dribble around and throw up horrible shots. He turns the ball over way too much and doesn’t try to get anyone else involved.
As you said, it’s not like he’s going to win us anymore games this year. What, we end up with 3 wins instead of 4? Who cares. Give the young kids the minutes out there and time to develop. Let’s see if we can find one or two guys on this team that are going to be decent to good ball players.

thank you.
Now, its time for the other guys to step up and play!

They are working hard...
and YES, we need a bona fide leader on the floor. Hopefully that guy or guys will emerge. The attendance and support to encourage these players who are fighting their way through this situation is what we can do right now. It would be much more productive than the gloom and doom if we were to HELP them ride the storm out… as tough as that may be. Yeah, we’re moaning and groaning but I feel more pain for the players right now than the fans.
I agree and disagree
This team needs more fan support, no doubt about it. (do you live in Utah and attend games luey? just curious).
I guess I disagree over the players pain v. fans pain. For me, the Runnin’ Utes have been my favorite sports team my entire life. I like ute basketball more than i like ute football even. so forgive me if I feel a bit more connected and emotional about the team as opposed to some kid who comes here from back east to play ball for two years and who will probably never return. Add to that that in a lot of ways, I am paying my hard-earned money for him to be here.

Point taken.... no disrespect toward the fans intended.
My reference to the players refers to the ones we have left and are maybe not the most talented but continue to work their butts off and have the dedication factor down. These guys are going to benefit in the long run as to having their potential developed. That may not translate into many wins but it will lay down some good building blocks and set a tone for UTE bball not present for awhile. I will attend games this year but most likely some road games as I try to escape the Montana winter. Pac-12 has some balmy places to visit and I look forward to it.
agreed.
i absolutely love the guys who are here and work hard, even the results aren’t there. I just can’t stand guys who show up looking like a tub of goo and then want to put that uniform on.

at the end of the day.......
does it really matter? 1 wins, 4 wins, 8 wins…….we aren’t playing for this year.

It matters because...
2 wins get’s us past “Roger Reid” bad…
1 win is a shame we won’t live down for a long, long time.
but are we going to get another win with him?
i dont think so……….maybe cs fullerton……….maybe idaho state……….

No one knows now...
But I agree with Middy, you don’t want a 1-win season. 1-win seasons in college basketball are tantamount to 0-win seasons in football. Only the worst of the worst hit that low of a level. Even 4 or 8 wins (the latter which wasn’t going to happen even with Jiggy) is at least progress.
4-23 is infinitely better, in my eyes, than 1-27. It might not seem like it, but in terms of respect, morale and foundation, it most certainly is.
i dont really agree........
but i can see your point. 8 wins? sure. the difference between 1-4 wins…….marginal in my mind in terms of morale. unless of course the wins come at the end of the year. then i agree. otherwise, its just which creampuffs you beat………

I don't think it's marginal...
1-win teams generally go down as the worst teams in college basketball history.
4-loss teams? They’re forgotten.
I don’t want that distinction.
does anyone outside of the wasatch front
look at BYU and think “man, I remember when they were 1-26”? I dont think so……..they just see one of the top programs in the West. likewise, WHEN and I emphasize WHEN not IF we return to the glory days, no one will remember our bad days…..and if they do………it will make our team sound better because of how far we have come.

I'm sure they did at the time...
Let’s just hope a one-win season doesn’t turn off recruits, or we’ll be having multiple one-win seasons.
That’s all I’m sayin’…
i whole heartedly agree with that.........
if this turns off recruits, we are in trouble. if guys transfer, we are in trouble. this team needed to be gutted, and it was. getting rid of a guy who cared so much about this team that he showed up to camp obese might be the final treatment of the disease.

Does it really matter at that point though?
Either way it’s historically bad. And that’s what this team is, with or preferably without Jiggy.

in my mind....
booting him off the team is the best option.

Yes...
I don’t want to sit through a one win season. It’s that simple. It would be like sitting through a winless college football season. These seasons are generally reserved for the worst of the worst of the worst in college basketball. I DON’T want Utah to be clumped with those teams.
Anytime any player is suspended it can't be "good news"
It might be a symptom of the disease but his suspension just shows how ill we really are.
isn't it fighting the disease though?
As I said above, this guy cared about the team so much that he showed up for this season borderline obese. He was thrown out of practice earlier for being a moron. And he has been a headache to the coach all year. It shows the rest of the guys that they can’t mess around and frees up time for the young guys.
I see no absolute down sides here. potential, maybe, but nothing definatively negative.

If he didn't need to be suspended because he was working hard etc, that wouldn't be better?
I agree the suspension is probably the right step, but the fact that it needed to happen shows how sick this team is.
well yeah....
I think we agree more or less. He had a chance to look himself in the mirror this past march and realize that he had a chance to be a leader, to help a young team, to do something special, to leave a mark. Instead, he ate Taco Bell all summer and he showed up out of shape and unready to play. then, he did what he did last year, shoot, shoot, shoot, and make pointless passes when necessary. He had the chance to be a leader, and he didn’t take it.
I think the suspension shows how sick he is……hopefully with him gone the other guys learn to lead and gain some chemistry.

Correct
I think it is representative of how bad the team chemistry was when K2 got there. I am just bracing myself for how bad this is really going to be.
I guess it’s time to become a big fan of minor league hockey. Go Grizzlies!
oh, its going to be brutal.
probably for the next two years. but i can honestly say that I feel that this team is going in the right direction, and I haven’t been able to say that since 2005.

I certainly hope so.
Other than some pretty great early recruiting success, nothing thus far has given me reason to cheer.
Absolutely
Even the woeful commentators at the Battle for Atlantis remarked that everyone else just stands around and watches Jiggy. He turns the ball over way to much for a D-1 point guard. I honestly don’t know what he is trying to do most of the time on the court and now I guess off it. This might help them become more of a team and balanced.
thats my sincere hope.
i think if everyone gets more involved, they will play harder. Its no secret that if you want your big guy to play good defense, give him a lot of early touches. Same can be said of every other player. If you let other guys have the ball more, they will play harder.

Jiggy makes a lot of stupid mistakes...
Because he’s the only one capable of doing anything. You put 90% of the burden on one player, and he’s going to make some dumb shots – partially because he has to. But without Jiggy, we lose every other game. With Jiggy, we have a shot at winning a couple more.
Whatever though. It’s a lost season anyway. But I have season tickets, so I’d at least like to see a couple wins.
I just want to get 1 more win so we have at least that on BYU.
So....Jake Heaps?
I realize you guys have (had?) a heated rivalry against BYU, but could be a chance to grab up a good(?) QB. I’m not too impressed by the guy myself, still may be an option.
umm no
if he didn’t have to sit out a year i’m sure we’d consider him but since he can’t help us next year I can’t see heaps at utah.
lol
that was my first thought too.

Would rather keep Jon Hays
Jon Hays is a better QB. What hays lacks in the ability department compared to Heaps, more than makes up for in leadership, heart, fire, ability to stand in the pocket and not flinch.
there is no adjective to put
in front of the word “no” to do it justice when it comes to Jake Heaps. “@#$) No!” is the closest i can get.
