Utah basketball hits new program low with 31 point home loss to CSU Fullerton

Tumblr_lcrwlshez01qdoghio1_500_medium

You want to believe this is the bottom. You want to believe it can't get much worse. Yet, every game, Utah seems to outdo itself.

And that's exactly what they did Wednesday night at the Huntsman Center.

Can anyone ever recall the last time a Pac-12 team lost, by thirty, to a Big West team? I'm guessing you'd have to go all the way back to the days when UNLV dominated the league - and that was decades ago, as they're now solely a California conference.

Embarrassing.

So, you think this is the bottom? Wait until BYU rolls into town Saturday. That will be an epic bloodshed - a game that very well could break the record books for biggest lopsided loss in Utah basketball history.

Buckle up. It's getting a bit bumpy around here.

I'm not even going.

I have two finals next week, and if I’m going to procrastinate, it’s not going to be at the JHC watching the Utes execution by the team down South.

Every game now the question will be, can the Utes keep the game within 25 points?

It’s all about the moral victories now.
In comparing YBU’s 1-25 campaign, at least they had multiple single-digit losses.
Remind me why we should believe in Coach K again?

by PanchoUte on Dec 7, 2011 9:49 PM MST reply actions

No the real question is...

.. what will be the larger margin of victory, BYU over Utah in basketball, or the Utes victory in Football?

by UnHoly Ram on Dec 7, 2011 9:56 PM MST reply actions

BYU's consolation prize

Well, the utes are claiming to have left BYU behind as rivals in football, so it’s only fair that BYU should have left the Utes behind as rivals in basketball. It’s the less lucrative, lower limelight consolation prize. USU has definitely been TDS` real rivals in basketball for years.

Really, PAC-12 is NOT known for good basketball, and never has been. It’s a football conference. It has an astonishingly mediocre lineup, the best of which is UCLA, which had been passable in recent years. Don’t feel too bad. This is what happens when schools focus all attentions on football. Besides, the last time the Utes were a powerhouse in basketball was when our grandfathers were children. Not like there`s that much of a reputation to uphold.

Talk to Big East and ACC and get back to me...

How many Pac-12 teams are there, on average, in March Madness? In 2011, USC didn’t even make it on the bracket; Washington had a brief run. SEC always does better than Pac-12. WCC MWC even beat Pac-12, last year. This year, none from Pac-12 on the top 25. I’ll be surprised if even 2 PAC-12 teams make it to March.

"Last time the Utes were a powerhouse....was when our grandfathers were children"

I know there is a small generational gap in Utah compared to other places, but WOW!

Give your grandfather my best regards and I hope he hasn’t fully succumbed to Alzheimers at the age of 27 and can recall the good ol’ days all the way back to last century when the Utes were a powerhouse.

Operational definition of a powerhouse

I guess that we jsut have different criteria of what makes a powerhouse. Utes have done fine, had a lot of NCAA appearances.

When they get to the same spot in their basketball as they are in football, they will be a powerhouse. They haven’t been at that level in basketball for more than 27 years…

Ouch.

I remember when Seattle U beat OSU something like 99-41. This doesn’t sound quite as bad, but it’s up there…. At least it goes to show there’s hope (even if you have to wait a few years….)

Went to the Cal Fullerton game.

I am admittedly much more cognizant of details of basketball than I was in the 90s when BYU had their 1-win season. So I won’t try to compare or anything.

But that said, I have never seen a worse college team than Utah’s this year. Ever. They were unbelievably bad last night. The game was done about 2:00 minutes into the game when Fullerton got up 14-0. I guess we played them about even for 18 minutes, and then gave up the 2nd half in even more glorious fashion.

As a coach, I don’t know how you would approach this season, other than running the same 3-4 plays over and over again, because I honestly don’t think they are capable of doing much else. They really aren’t.

Our only shot at another W this year is Idaho St, but we should realistically lose to them by about 20 points.

Bad. Bad. Bad.

Absolutely Pathetic

I live in Southern Utah so I watch the home games on the live feed over the internet. Last night, we looked so bad it nearly brought me to tears. I didn’t expect us to be THIS bad. It’s painful to watch. It’s going to be rough for us “foul-weather” fans that can’t just tune it out and ignore it.

yes.....its frustrating.......

but I am giving Larry a pass this year. 100%.

But hey, we only had 7 turnovers last night, which was awesome (i can’t remember what, but there was something different about our roster last night…………….hmmmmmmmm……….)

We just gave up way too many open shots and we were absoltuely abused on the boards. Good news is that we have a LOT of size coming in next year and that should help with both areas. This is going to take four years folks, but lets ride through the dark days.

Love the Jazz, Utes, and BoSox.

4 years is a long time

I just hope they’re mildly competitive next year.

He'll definitely get a pass for this season...

But there has to be significant improvement next year or it’s hard to imagine he’ll return for a third campaign.

agreed.

this team needs to approach double digit wins next year in my mind for him to get a third campaign….but I think we will.

I agree...

But anything less than 10 wins and he enters 2013 on a very, very hot seat.

I’d feel comfortable with 10-14 wins. That’s a big jump from what is likely a one-win season, but…

isn't it sad.......

that we are sitting here talking about how a coach has to get 10 wins to keep his job, and that 10 wins would be a BIG improvement…………..

Can't give him a pass

Even though the team is literally starting from scratch, with the talent on this team we should at least be beating Fresno States CSF. Instead those are the two biggest blowouts. The team doesn’t hustle, they don’t guard the perimeter, they don’t run place, they make terrible passes, they take extremely ill-advised shots, they commit sloppy fouls. Any decent coach would have fixed some of these problems. This guy hasn’t proved himself, Chris Hill made a terrible hire. It will be decades before we recover from this.

damn you auto correct

I’m typing fast and my new mac tries to autocorrect things wrong. Let me re-do that whole statement and fix some things:

Though I'm not going to make major overall judgments until 2 or 3 years into this...

uteswim1988 and comrade crimson do have valid points when it comes to this team not hustling and playing aggressive. I am surprised by how bad we are getting blown out by bad teams. I was not expecting that. We are only 8 games in so it’s way too early to throw the whole thing under the bus but there are valid concerns above and beyond simple talent issues… I give LK a pass on almost everything else but I would like to see the team play with more passion… more guts…. more something….
