Jerry Sloan resigns as Jazz's head coach
This is big news in Utah. Sloan is an institution and it's being announced that he, along with his long-time assistant Phil Johnson, will resign today at 3:00.
I am a huge Jazz fan (haven't hid it well) and this is a big blow. I am utterly shocked and saddened right now.

Jazzy, you know that I'm not a Jazz fan whatsoever
But this is a sad day for the game of basketball. There really isn’t anyone else coaching in the NBA right now that can even be compared to Sloan.
Here’s yet another showcase of Sloan’s longevity: since the Jazz hired Sloan, my own team has gone through 10 head coaches (11 if you count Don Nelson twice). Maybe the fans around here who kept telling me that Sloan needed to go may not realize what they had until it was gone?

What a bummer
I’d back Jerry as long as he wants to coach. That said, he was obviously at the end of his rope, but it should not have gone down like this. A living, let alone working, legend deserves better than this.
If the rumors I’m hearing are true about spats with players, then this is a dark day for the franchise. The Jazz could survive Sloan’s retiring just fine, but having him get strongarmed is a really, really bad sign I’m afraid.
just think how many disappointments this man has had. i congratulate him for sticking around as jazz caoch all these years.
did he ever win coach of the year? it seems he was always second or third place in voting.
The University of Utah is off to the Pac-12 Conference and will be in the South Division. Hopefully we will get to the first ever Pac-12 Championship Game. Jon " Bones " Jones gets his chance for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title when he faces off against Shogun Rua.

Nope, and it's one of the greatest travesties in NBA history.
They ought to give it to him this year as a goodbye present and to make up for the shaft they gave him a few years ago.

He could coach Cleveland to a winning record, there is no doubt in my mind.
I should have included that he did it in the Western Conference...
He probably would have got to 50 wins if we were in the Eastern Conference.
And don't forget they lost Harpring in January of that year...
Who, at the time, was one of their top scorers.
WOW
Nice piece of information. That is truly astounding.

Too bad there's so much more to college b-ball coaching than just coaching...
otherwise Jerry could come lead the Utes back to respectability. :)
sad day indeed
Wow what a complete shock. As a Jazz fan that remembers the first year they ever made the playoffs, this makes me really sad.
Middy’s post sums it up. There were many players that logged serious minutes with the Jazz, left for greener pastures, and then fell off the face of the Earth.
I always felt that the Jazz’s owner and front office didn’t do what it took to surround Stockton, Malone, and Sloan with the right compliments. Unlike the NFL, where a 6th seed can win a Super Bowl, the NBA is very predictable in its outcome.
what i loved about jerry...
was he was the same guy for all of his years with utah – always brutally honest, loyal, passionate about the game, hard working..players and other coaches respected him for that..now he can ride his john deere tractor off into the sunset…
I just realized something...
despite growing up in Utah, I was never a Jazz fan. But I was a Stockton fan, a Sloan fan and, to lesser degree, a Malone fan. Just like when Elway retired and I no longer had a reason to care about the Broncos, I now have no justifiable reason to root for the Jazz or give a shit about the NBA as a whole. That’s a good thing because, with Utah’s current leadership, the Jazz are destined for the basement. The writings on the wall and it’s only a matter of time before Miller Junior sells the team to Seattle. LHM Group (auto-dealers, Megaplexs, et al) has taken a turn for the worse since Larry died and I foresee the eventual end of that particular “empire” rapidly approaching.
Anyway, Sloan’s retirement means that I’m completely free to turn my back on pro sports altogether and I like that. None of my cash, nor TV viewership, will ever again go towards the support of the whiny, grossly overpaid dicks who make up the bulk of pro players today.
I'll remain a fan, but my energy and heart won't be in it for a long, long time...
I grew up in the Stockton/Malone/Sloan era. My first game was at the old Salt Palace when Utah beat the Bulls on a Stockton layup. It was magical and I was a fan from that point on.
This is like losing my entire childhood. I was just a kid during the NBA Finals runs, but it was an experience.
Now it just won’t be the same.
Yeah, it hasn't been the same for me since Stock retired,
but Sloan kept me rooting for ‘em. I can honestly say that I haven’t cared about any of the players since Harpring left. I look at that roster and all I see is a lack of character… it could be any NBA team’s roster. It’s sad and I’m done with it. The NBA is empty of charisma and character now. At least the NFL still has a few players/coaches worth caring about (but not nearly enough). Looks like I’m strictly a collegiate follower from now on.

Antoher nice thing about college sports is they never have lockouts
I keep accidentally eating my pets. Maybe I should get something less appetizing, like a cat instead of a Twinkie.

that is why college football is better than pro football.
although i don’t agree with some of the new rules they will be implementing. 2011 season.

I remember that game too.
I was watching at a friends house. when he made that layup I jumped up off the couch and put my hand through their basement ceiling. I guess thats what they get for having 7’ ceilings. A lot of great memories growing up with the Jazz.
Here's to Coach Sloan...
We raise our drinks to a legend, but most of all, we raise our drinks to an honorable man. Here’s to Coach Sloan always having a field to plow. Thanks Jerry!

the jazz are just going to get worse from here on out and the guy who said they will be sold to seattle investor is probably right.

And the new era is underway...
That was brutal. I don’t want to say this team was playing good basketball, because they weren’t, but they were competitive. I mean, their loss to Chicago wasn’t a bad loss. They played well for most that game and were in it at the end against a top-three eastern conference team.
But this loss was brutal. It was ugly. Very ugly. Utah played great out of the gate, but faltered badly in the second half. I think Ty is in a tough spot because this team is not very talented. Sloan was able to maximize that talent and it’s probably why Utah is above .500 right now.
Not all coaches can do this, though. Not all good coaches can do this. Ty can be a good coach and still be shackled by lack of depth.
I would not be surprised if Utah missed the playoffs.
