Nai Fotu arrested on DUI charges
I hate reporting these stories.
Utah linebacker Nai Fotu, who sat out last season with a leg injury, was arrested Sunday on DUI charges. He's currently locked up at the Salt Lake Metro Jail and it's probably safe to assume his career at Utah could be over.
Fotu was an explosive player and I was excited to get him back. This is devastating not just on a football level - but on a personal level.
Hopefully he gets his life in order.

Hate hate hate this
Oh, man…this sucks. Not just for the team, but for him as a person. He endured a lot of injury and rehab to get back on the field. And now it looks like it is over.
He was one of the Utes that supported my family while my wife was sick. I have a photo of him and Joe Dale with my wife. He even called me several times to ask about her.
Hate this…
It's tough when a player throws it all the way on something so stupid.
Looking at the charges, there is no way we can spin this. He’s done and that’s a blow to him and the team.
I still remember the hit he leveled on an SDSU player back during the 2007 season. I think I uploaded it to YouTube back then. I’ll post a link to it.
Damn. That makes it even more tragic...
Because he seems like a good guy. He’s a beast and now it’s all gone.
BTW, I hope you’re still holding up strong!
I couldn’t believe the paws on this guy when I shook his hand. He had a big heart, too.
And I’m hanging in there. Thanks, Jazzy. Hope your family is doing well.
Hopefully Whitt sees this as one mistake...
And has faith in Fotu to the point where he doesn’t allow it to ruin his career.
Fool Whit once, Shame on you, Fool Whit Twice...
This was Fotu’s second chance. He’s already had previous run ins with the law, for alcohol related issues to boot.
did not see the second chance part. i guess bye, bye
The University of Utah is off to the Pac-12 Conference and will be in the South Division. Hopefully we will get to the first ever Pac-12 Championship Game. Jon " Bones " Jones gets his chance for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title when he faces off against Shogun Rua. Jon Jones will win.

And your point?
Utah has values. We may not be as value driven as The TDS, but Utah still has values. I for one love that. I wouldn’t want us to bend our values.
The attitude that would cause this to be a blip on the radar in the SEC is exactly the mentality that has caused most of the SEC to be under investigation for infractions recently, including the upcoming vacating of this year’s National Championship.

It always sucks to hear news like this.
Fotu was one of my favorite players, and I hated to see him miss so much time with injuries. I was really looking forward to watching him on the field this year. What a shame.
Fotu's career is definitely not over...
These strories really are heartbreaking. It’s real unfortunate for the player, their families, and the team. However, I think it’s overblown to say his career is over. I’m sure their will some disciplinary action that will take place for the season opener or the first 2-3 games. However, assuming Fotu has a change or heart and shows his willingness to get his life back in order on and off the field, I think he’ll be around during spring ball and we will all see him play this fall. Maybe I’m a bit optimistic, but I think we’ll see Fotu knocking heads and making big plays come 9/10 against USC (2nd game of the season).
does he deserve to be around for spring ball?
having an athletic scholarship to a FBS football program is privilege, and when you go and do shit like this, not only does it endanger yourself and other motorists, it tarnishes the reputation of the team and the university.
if he isn’t kicked off the team, he deserves a suspension.
...has nothing to do with what's fair
it’s just how college football works. We need fotu to be out there on the field, but he needs to show that he is willing to get his life back on track.
Sometimes kids make really stupid, bad choices. Which seem completely pointless given the direction in which their life was heading.
I feel bad for this kid. If this is true, it’s hopefully a wake-up call and he manages to get himself back on track. It’s certainly not too late.
I'm thinking of having a little party down in Newport.
Oh no!
This is indeed very sad. Positive thing is that he got caught before he hurt anyone with his car. Now it’s up to him to react. Does he let his life crash and burn or does he use this as a teaching moment and take all the steps he needs to win back Coach Whit and the team’s trust? I agree with others that said this doesn’t necessarily mean game over for Nai, probably a suspension of some sort with strict steps to comply to earn his return. I think/hope he makes it and we have the opportunity to watch his talent on the field again this year.
He was suspended.
Whitt was quoted today saying that Nai is suspended from the team indefinitely. So it seems that if he can turn it around, he could still play for us this year.
More charges?
The SLTrib reported that he had other charges, including a warrant from Provo for public urination, possession by a minor and giving false information.
Not looking good. The suspension could be until the courts settle it. I know Whitt would hate to let him go. There is a need for him in the defense.
I support Whitt and agree with his hard stance, but if this was Florida, Fotu might sit out the Spring Game is all…
Wow
Dude is a beast on the field, but Coach Whitt is doing him a favor by suspending him. This kid needs to get his life in order. Some things are always more important than football. I wish good luck to him!

He needs to go
I don’t care that he could help a defense, for the 3rd straight year, be short on experience. He needs to be gone from this team. At least as far as ever playing for us.
I don’t care if Utah does what Oregon started to do with Blount two years ago. Keep him on the team, let him practice with the team, keep the support there to help him get back on track, and finish graduating.
But in no way, shape, or form, should this person EVER suit up for Utah in a game situation again.
This is his second strike, both involving alcohol. As someone who’s life has been effected by drinking and driving it is an inexcusable offense. He should never be in Ute Red again.
I'm not advocating giving up on the guy.
I’m not even advocating kicking him off the team. In fact I think that’s the last thing Whit should do.
Getting kicked off the team, would likely just cause a further downward spiral, and probably lead to more issues.
I think he should stay on the team. He should practice with the team, he should go to meetings with the team. The team should be there to give him a good group of buddies to lean on and support him. The coaches can do the other part of their job, which is to help mold him into a fine citizen, who made a terrible, stupid mistake, but was able to learn, and grow from it, thanks to the kind of support that a football team can give him.
What I am advocating is that Nai Fotu NEVER suits up in an actual game again.
It's not going to happen like that, though...
Whittingham is not going to waste a scholarship on a player who will never play. So the only way your scenario works out is if Fotu pays his own way. I’m not sure he has the means.
The last thing I want to see is him give up on his education over a stupid mistake. He’s not going pro. He needs an education. That education is now in jeopardy and I hate that thought.
Yea I hate that thought as well...
But a D1 Football scholarship is not a right. He should have thought about that before he got arrested for underage alcohol possession in 2009. He should have thought about that before he chose to ignore going to court for the previous issue. Most importantly he should have thought about that before he made the extremely idiotic choice of getting behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of alcohol, allegedly. If Whit chooses to pull the scholarship for that reason, there’s no blame on him.
I don’t think losing the scholarship, and therefore causing him to leave school is the best thing for him. However, there have to be repercussions for his actions. As a football player, he is, and should be held to a higher standard.
I trust Whit. I’m sure Whit will try to do what’s best for the kid, while also keeping the best interest of the program in mind. I personally hope the kid can stay in school, but I also, strongly, hope he never suits up in a game again.
I feel really bad for the guy
But I’m also proud to be a fan of a school that means it when they say they want character players. Hopefully (probably) his talent will earn him a chance to play somewhere else, and he can get his life turned around, clean up, and find success.
Moral Luck
The result of this story could have been much worse. What then? I’m glad the kid didn’t end up killing someone or himself. It’s no ones fault but his own, but I’m also wondering which of his friends let him get into a motorized vehicle while intoxicated. Young bucks don’t fly solo on the weekends, they hang out in packs. Come on people, use taxi cabs or move downtown where you can walk home from the bar.
I’m glad Coach Whitt doesn’t tolerate BS and gets rid of bad apples. Didn’t Marty Johnson get a DUI and Urban Meyer suspended him for the entire 03-04 season but then started on the Fiesta Bowl team? Not sure if that is a precedent or if my memory is confusing things. I’m too lazy to look it up. I know kids go out and have fun and they should be able to, but you have to be smarter than that, especially if you’re in the spotlight.
Seems crazy, given the medical rehab he did to get ready for this season. The team doesn’t owe him anything, but I think they should hold a carrot for him to try and grab. Let him work towards graduating and get him on the field by week X, if he meets strict conditions. Sounds like he’s developing an alcohol problem. Two arrests and he’s only 22. Not a good sign. Hopefully he’ll recognize this and turn it around. I’d love to see him play football again too. He’s a great player.
Even good people make mistakes
Many of you will probably disagree with me here, but look at LeGarrete Blount and Jeremiah Masoli who played at Oregon. Both learned from their mistakes and found their way back to the game. Masoli was dumb and ended up having to find a team willing to give him another chance, but the last thing you should do is give up on these kids just because they make a mistake. Show me a kid 18-22 years old who says he doesn’t make mistakes and I’ll show you a liar. These kids grow up thinking that because they are superstars on a football team that they can get away with anything. A good coach who sees potential in an athlete not only as a player, but as a human being will not shut a player out. Masoli would have been offered another chance had he not lied to the coaches face. Had he shown the maturity to man up when asked about the situation, he would have started for Oregon last year.
Right now, Fotu’s future is what he wants to make of it. I don’t know the whole situation, but I do think that if KWhitt thinks he can change, he will make his road back to suiting up for games and even playing a road through hell, but if he can make it through it, it will make him that much better a player and a much more mature person.
Again I don’t know all of the details, but from what I do know, if it were me making the decision to keep him or cut him loose, I would make him show me just how bad he wants to stay and be a part of the team. If he could show me by making it through the hell I would put him through, he’s in.
He already showed he didn't want it bad enough. This is not a first offense.
I’m all for giving second chances, but if you don’t learn from your mistakes you deserve a harsh punishment. Every choice in life has a consequence and trying to shield people from them doesn’t help them, it cripples them. I think a permanent suspension is in order. If another team gives him a chance great. But drinking and driving is no joke. Alcohol related accidents cause 25,000 deaths each year. If one of those 25,000 was a family member of yours, I think you’d not be calling for leniency.
You may have a point
I am lucky in that I haven’t had someone in my family killed by a drunk driver. My opinion may be completely different if that were the case. Either way, I’m sure that Coach Whitt will make the best decision for this kid’s future, and I’ll stand behind it no matter what it is. Fotu had better hope that Coach would be as forgiving as I would have been in this situation.
Fotu's a senior, right?
If he can’t get back on the field this season, I don’t know that he can get back on the field ever.
I keep accidentally eating my pets. Maybe I should get something less appetizing, like a cat instead of a Twinkie.

Naw, he's gone.
Here’s hoping he’s in shape and can try out in the pros. Teh guy was a crushing tackler, one of our biggest hitters ever.
