Jim Boylen has been fired
Utah basketball coach Jim Boylen has been fired after a 13-18 finish. The news isn't surprising, but I won't grave dance. I liked Boylen. I wanted him to succeed. I'm disappointed and saddened it did not work out.
Hopefully he finds a new gig and proves to be a successful head coach.
With that said, the decision was the right one. Utah could not afford to bring Boylen back - not after two consecutive losing seasons.
I wish Boylen the best of luck and thank him for running the Utah program with integrity.
You can find the press release here.

Here we go again...
How much was the buyout again? How many players are going to bolt? Hill better have an ace hiding up his sleeve…
Telling Sign of Program's Disappearance
Interesting observation of how far Utah basketball has fallen off the radar. Scanning a couple of national websites, including ESPN and Sports Illustrated, and there is not a single mention, headline or link of Boylen’s firing, even on their college basketball page.
It was an expensive firing, but I think the Utes need to make a splash heading into next season. i would prefer a guy with So Cal roots for recruiting purposes. Should be interesting.
Noticed that too! And amazed!
BB at Uof U has a great history, but as you stated, and I am amazed, it isn’t mentioned anywhere on the national scene! We have fallen off the map in Basketball…sad feeling! Lets hope we get a great hire for the Pac-12 beginning!
I say we are going to hire a coach from a mid level team that makes the tourney and wins a game or two.
just my two cents.
The University of Utah is off to the Pac-12 Conference and will be in the South Division. Hopefully we will get to the first ever Pac-12 Championship Game. Jon " Bones " Jones gets his chance for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title when he faces off against Shogun Rua. Jon Jones will win.

Yup...
I remember when Rick Majerus resigned. I was actually watching ESPN when it happened and they broke in to announce it.
Noway nohow would Boylen’s firing ever be breaking news on ESPN.
This program has been irrelevant for six years. Even when they made the NCAA Tournament in 2009, no one gave them respect. So many media personalities picked Arizona to beat Utah and what do you know, they were absolutely correct.
sad but true
no one gives a damn about Utah basketball anymore.
Noticed on SI
SI has finally mentioned the firing! We at least get attention eventually albeit small, hope we do begin the accent into respectability after 6 years of obscurity with a needed coaching change!
This is the right move
Reading the other posts about this not being reported anywhere nationally is a good example of why it had to happen. As much as I campaigned for this, I am sad for Boylen. He is a good guy and someone I really wanted to be successful here but this is definitely the right decision. That being said, I’m excited to see what type of coach the program can attract. I am excited for the search and I think Hill must have received positive feedback as to the interest level in the job or else he wouldn’t have made this move. This move gets me excited about Utah basketball again.
Who would be some possible replacements?
I never liked Jim Boylen and it wasn’t because he was the coach of the Utes. I had much respect for Majerus all those years ago and I have respect for Coach Wittingham in football even though The U is bitter rivals with BYU. The reason I never liked Boylen is for his psychotic, run all around, jump up and down, yell at the players and referees manner with which he coached. I think this would have to wear on the players a lot and kind of have a reverse effect on having them respect him. I know I would not like to play for or work for somebody who was always yelling at me.
Hopefully, the next coach of the Utes can restore the program to some glory with the U now in the Pac-10. I am a Ute fan except for when they play BYU.

I wouldn't say he was psychotic...
He was emotional. I think that emotion could be have been his downfall. I read a couple years ago that teams take on the character of their coaches and when the coach is all over the place, the team will mirror that.
Utah has been an up and down team ever since Boylen came here. He beat Cal in his first year, which was a nice road win, and then turned around and lost 4 of their next 6. Even in the tournament season, Utah lost to Southwest Baptist, Cal (at home) and Idaho State.
So his teams have been up and down ever since the beginning. It wasn’t going to change.
He was a good guy, though. And I liked him. I wish it could have worked out because he ran a very clean program, improved the student-athletes and put his all into it.
Yeah...
Majerus never yelled at anyone or was over emotional at all was he?
I think you should take a long, hard look back at how Majerus treated everyone. If you actually have respect for him, after listing the reasons you didn’t like Boylen, I’d be amazed and quite frankly very confused.
You liked Majerus and didn’t like Boylen for one reason and one reason only.
Winning.

yup
Majerus was not the nicest guy but he knew how to coach and won.

I will agree with the first part...
But not the second. I have posted here before that I think Majerus was what crippled this program.
At the end of this career, when he became the bitter, angry man that he is now, it pushed Utah basketball down. His personality drove people away and perhaps more than any other man, it pushed away Judkins. Just my two cents.
Jim Boylen has been fired […] won’t grave dance. I liked Boylen. I wanted him to succeed. I’m disappointed and saddened it did not work out.
Herein lies the difference between Utah fans and Ucla fans. Those people are still angry towards and bitter about virtually everyone who has ever coached any of their teams who is a) not named Wooden and b) not won a national championship
I'm thinking of having a little party down in Newport.
What about
Randy Rahe at Weber State he was at Utah for a year and is doing a very good job there, or go get Jeff Judkins. Yes I know he coaches the BYU women’s team but he has done a great job there, coached 10 years with Majerus and spent five years in the NBA.

Agree 100% about Judkins.
I know there is a lot of baggage with him being a women’s coach, but he know how to coach at Utah.
He had some fine qualities
After he toughened up the guard line and they improved in his second season, I thought he was getting it done. But, the shelf life on mediocrity in college sports is 4 years, not ten.
I hope he gets a decent job, I still say though: he’s a fine assistant coach at this time, head coaching seems just out of his range for the time being.

First time I remember you making a joke of yourself at Utah football games. As I watched the games I discovered you were a joke of a head coach. Go back to being your rightful place as a career assistant coach, you promised a lot and delivered diddly poo. Now take your money and go home.
We need a Real Coach from a Real conference
I keep seeing people throwing out names of coaches from small conferences and assistant coaches. Enough already. We are now Pac 12 and need a coach with a) big time experience, b) a proven winning track record, c) recruiting connections in areas where we can realistically expect to get recruits.
This is not going to be an easy task for Dr. Hill, but I suspect that anything less is going to be met with skepticism by much of the Ute Nation. We can’t afford another grand experiment.
