SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah has named Roger Reid as the school's 15th head men's basketball coach, director of athletics Dr. Chris Hill announced today. Reid, the current head coach of Southern Utah University the past four years after spending 7 seasons coaching the BYU Cougars, has agreed to a nine-year contact worth $1.7 million per year for base salary, radio and TV compensation and camps.

"We're excited to have Roger as our new head coach," said Hill. "He is someone who has tremendous knowledge of the game of basketball, cares about his players, is into the individual development of each player, and shares our vision for the University of Utah basketball program." Reid, 65, brings over 20 years of coaching experience in the collegiate ranks with him to Utah. After working 6 years as an assistant to LaDell Anderson at Brigham Young University, Reid was named the head coach of the Cougars in 1989, where he led BYU to the NCAA Tournament five times.

"This is a dream come true for me to become the head coach at Utah," said Reid. "My family and I are very thankful for this opportunity, and we are excited about returning to this high of level. We are going to try to build a program that Michael Young, Chris Hill and the Utah fans can be proud of, and we are going to do it the right way."

Reid began his coaching career at Brigham Young, working under former head coach Frank Arnold from 1978-1983. He was retained at BYU when Anderson replaced Arnold. With Reid as an assistant, the Cougars made the NCAA Tournament six times and advanced to the Elite Eight in 1981.

After coaching at BYU until 1996, Reid would later become the head coach of the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, where he's been since 2007.

During Reid's four-year stint in Cedar City, he's helped reshape the program and its commitment to winning. He has also been heavily involved in the local community and has brought a new energy to Southern Utah University basketball.

In 1998-03, Reid worked as an assistant coach at Phoenix in the NBA, where he helped guide the Suns to four playoff appearances.

A native of Springville, Utah, Reid received his degree from Weber State in 1968. There he played under legendary coach Dick Motta.

Reid takes over a Utah team that went 13-18 and finished seventh in the Mountain West Conference with a 6-10 record last season. Reid will coach Utah in its inaugural Pac-12 season, where the Utes will officially become a member later this summer.

Utah ranks 10th in the NCAA with a .656 (1,595-833) winning percentage. The Runnin' Utes have also made 27 NCAA Tournament appearances, recorded 33 20-win seasons, and won 29 conference championships.
